@elsa1688 I'm engorged most of the morning... Skin is tight and boobs are rock hard. I don't know if that's oversupply or just a result of baby only waking every 4-5 hours at night.

@kaysa2 when did you find the time to pump? I'm on the same schedule as you with feedings and think if I pump she won't have enough when she goes to feed her..
@jenn72178 She finally passed out from sheer exhaustion around 9:00am. I ate some breakfast and then pumped for five minutes. I only pump once a day, since I'm not too far out pp, but even if it means skipping a precious sleep interval it is so worth it. Last night having an ounce of BM in a bottle meant I had time to clean spit up off myself while BFF gave DD the bottle - probably one of the most precious 'me' moments of the week.
@kaysa2 All the advice I was given (on here too) told me not to pump until 4 weeks. I would love to start the once a day pumping sooner. I feel chained to the couch sometimes and DH would love to feed her once a day since he is still home with me for a little while longer. My daughter is 11 days. What made you start?

I wish my LO would sleep for that long at night! Last night she woke up every other and was glued to my boobs from 4-6am. She fell asleep at my nipple and when i put her in bed, she woke up right away and demanded more boob. Is this the growing spurt or am i just not making enough?

How old is your LO? This sleeping most of the night is new this week. Prior to the last three days she was going through her 3 week growth spurt... They say it lasts a day. They lie. Anyway, I would think chances are it's either a cluster feeding for growth or maybe you're having transfer issues like AmyG has been talking about.

@jshrop She is 18 days old. She had a few better nights where she slept one 4 hrs session and then wakes up every 3 hours after. The last few nights have been awful with the combination of frequent hunger and gas pain.
My baby is 17 days old and the pediatrician told me I could pump because he falls asleep after 30 mins of nursing and I still wasn't getting soft enough. I pump once during the day and usually get a bottle worth (2 oz). I pump every night at 9 while DH feeds him and I get about 5 oz. we freeze the 5 oz. have a little freezer stash started.

Sounds like 3 week growth spurt.... It gets better

For the past day and a half my leftie is now producing about half of what my rightie is (based on pumping). I don't know what I changed in my routine, other than maybe nursing a bit more? But I still keep both sides pretty even. Is this normal?
Has anyone experienced an icy-hot sensation when milk is coming out of nipple? I am experiencing this on my right nipple. It doesn't sting, just feels like menthol laced milk is coming out. It's uncomfortable and lasts the entire feeding. We are using a nipple shield and the initial latch is painful for maybe 5 seconds and then the latch feels fine.
So tonight we are dealing with a extra fussy baby, normally doesn't fuss at all. She was crying at the boob and not eating well. SO says, just give her a bottle... Excuse me? That would be too easy and sorry if we are keeping u awake. All night you keep me up more then our daughter with your snoring.
Eventually I pumped and gave him 2 oz of BM... Im actually happy she screamed for him too... Ha it's not me or BF
Come to find out she had a burp stuck. A big big one!!
When pumping, how much does a 11/12 day old take from a bottle at one feeding?
Around 2 oz, maybe 2.5 is an expected feeding amt.
Of course if the bottle is too fast of flow and they aren't used to it they may chug way more than that!
se kellymom paced bottle feeding. and there is a milk calculator to give you a range of how much milk in bottle to give dependig on how many feeds a day.
Thanks! I was just curious if I pumped enough for a feed. (No, only one ounce). I shouldn't need to give a bottle before the first month mark, unless something unexpected comes up.
My boys for some.reason will NOT take the breast. They just scream bloody murder. We get them calm and try again and bam same thing. It's really frustrating. So now I'm trying to pump, but not getting much at all when I pump... wtf do I do? I have one can of formula left and am trying to get this crap figured out before I run out of it x(
Eta i tried using a nipple sheild, and that worked for one feeding but then back to the screaming, even with a sheild.
@CJnKR2014 -- have you tried pumping a bit and then offering the breast? That works for one of mine. I don't think he's willing to do the work to get the let down. The other hates my boob no matter what I do. He acts like it's trying to kill him! Lol. I keep trying though!
@CAMag yeah I've tried manually pumping beforehand and tried electric. They both act, like you said, like its going to kill them lmao
@CJnKR2014@CAMag you guise... I was able to feed both babies at the same time today, nursing one and bottle feeding the other. I used a boppy for the nursing one and put her close in the cradle hold, then used the outer part of the boppy to position her sis and hold her head with the hand/arm supporting nursing baby's head. Used my free hand to hold bottle. Felt like a badass, until it came time to burp and realized I needed more arms haha.
My girls were not cooperating with tandem BFing today. Instead I nursed one at a time, and their schedules were off all day so I never got a break. ATM they're both sleeping and I am praising all the gods in the universe!
@CJnKR2014 have you tried side lying nursing? I find that when he's screaming at me its the only way that works. I don't know of he feels more secure because he's totally supported or if the nipple is a better shape for him but its worth a shot. Good luck!
Anyone else really proud and protective of their stash? I have been pumping for a little over a week and we offered DS a bottle 2 days ago to see how it goes. Now DH loves being able to feed him and wants to do it constantly. Lol but I've been a little stingy with my stash and don't want to blow through it. That stuff is like liquid gold!
Anyone know if you can buy Earth Mama Angel Nipple Butter in a store? I've tried a couple of places and haven't seen it. I know I can order it on Amazon but kinda wanted the instant gratification of grabbing it tomorrow while running some errands.

I've seen it at target. It was near the feminine hygiene section.
Just need to vent a minute.... I have been super lucky to have a hubs who is so incredibly supportive of Breastfeeding. Even my mil and friends are crazy supportive. My mom and grandmother were here for all of 4 hours before suggesting that my baby is crying because obviously my milk isn't enough.... She must be starving... I should give her a bottle with some cereal in it... Good god! I will feed my child my way, she's crying because she's hot and it's time for her to eat. And yes, Breast fed babies eat more frequently than formula fed babies. Back off! Bleh! It's so hard to have someone put that doubt in your head, you start to think something is wrong with you. Thank goodness hubs can check me back to reality.

We've been pretty lucky so far, but tonight has me in tears. I have a few concerns if anyone can help:
1) LO has been fussy all day and now (middle of the night) refusing to latch on to the left side, just screaming. She's burped and pooped, but still won't latch and if she does, she's off crying a minute or two later. (Doing fine on the right)
2) The latch-on pain was finally getting better, but is coming back now. The latch is so painful, but it's persisting a bit now when she's nursing. I know it's not normal to have the "tube of lipstick" look when they're done, but that's happened consistently on the right side ... So maybe partially a latch issue?
3) Nipples are so sore and burning a bit during and after nursing... Maybe thrush? If so, which doctor do I see - primary care or OB? An LC first? The treatment seems so daunting and stressful in itself.
Sorry I'm rambling, I'm just feeling so confused! What do you think @AmyG* ?
Anyone else have a hard time telling when they are empty? He will eat on one side, and it gets all floppy, but I can still get milk out if I squeeze a bit. Empty or not? He has a harder time latching when it's floppy so I don't know if I'm empty or he's lazy.
@mtgrizgirl huge hugs for you! I know how upset that would make me. I am so sorry you have to do that. Just keep in mind its only 2 weeks, you can make it through it, and before you know it you will be BFing your baby like a champ!
@mtgrizgirl Crying is OK! You are sick and dealing with the pumping and dumping on top of everything. Just take one day, hour or minute at a time. LO needs you to be healthy too. Sending hugs and strength.

I have the opposite problem where my mom thinks i'm feeding too often because my baby is crying for boobs every 2-3 hours. She is used to feeding me formula when i was young so she doesnt understand BM gets digested much faster. We just got to ignore those comments and do what is right for the LO. Hugs!!
If you can try to get in with an IBCLC lactatio consultant to evaluate latch, figure out what's going on with baby and lipstick look is NOT ok and is sign of latch issue!! they can also evaluate nips, but with bad latch get that fixed first to see if any burning clears up from damaged nips.
I posted on one of these threads hints for helping baby when they won't latch so if you can find that I don't have to type it again.
I called an IBCLC and she suggested calling my OB because it sounded like thrush and my OB said to wait it out another day or two, so that's what I'm doing. It does feel better, so hopefully it's nothing too serious.
She said the "lipstick" look was a shallow latch and to try to push DD to latch more deeply, easier said than done. I'm going to go the next support group they offer at the hospital, but in the meantime, how damaging can this be? That side is not painful and she's gaining/wetting a lot.
