Glucose Test! Who's excited?

I have to take mine in the next two weeks. I'm so not looking forward to it. I don't know what's worse the nasty sugary drink or fasting. Anyone else taking their test soon?

T-minus two-and-a-half weeks here. I'm not really looking forward to it, but I suppose it's necessary. I want told to fast for mine, just to not eat or drink anything in the hour between I drink it and the blood draw. I actually get a double whammy that day because, after my test, I have to go in and get my Rh shot.
Ugh!!! I feel your pain. I have to get my tDap shot that day! and they do a 3rd tri HIV test (in case I got HIV since they tested me in first tri, I guess?). What a day! I'm planning on lots of couch and netflix for that afternoon.

  • I will have mine later this week, but just 1 hour and no fasting. I had one early on because my dad is diabetic, and that one was fine. My fingers are crossed that this one will be too - GD is one of my fears! Good luck to you all :)
  • Mine is July 14th.  I was told not to fast just not to eat anything sugary for breakfast.  I am not looking forward to it.

  • I must be the oddball because the glucose test really doesn't bother me. I'm told not to fast, just not to eat/drink anything too sugary that morning. And I don't think the drink taste that bad... just like flat, extra sweet Sprite. My OB gives the option of orange or lemon-lime flavor. I've done lemon-lime the past two times with no problem, so I'm sticking with that.

  • I'm pretty nervous for this. The idea of fasting while pregnant means I won't be feeling well. The idea of drinking that stuff while feeling sick....ugh. Looking for an alternative to this.

  • I'm scared of it :0( But, I don't have to fast! Just a low card meal beforehand.

  • Hmmm weird that we're all getting different instructions!  Mine is a week from tomorrow.  They told me I didn't have to fast but I can't have anything (even water) after I have the drink.

I'm not really dreading it too much but maybe I'll eat my words if it does make me sick to my stomach.

  • Hmm I wonder if my office has the lemon lime flavor. I don't care for orange too much.

No fasting over here. She just told me to eat protein.
  • My midwife doesn't use the Glucola drink. They use giant jelly beans. Not yummy jelly belly ones lol, but giant old people jelly beans. I have to eat 10 in 2 min. Yummm... @-)
  • I had the test last week and it really was nothing. I was told to eat a normal meal before and to avoid anything sugary. My appointment was right after lunch, so I ate my normal lunch. The drink was really sweet and it tasted like orange soda. The worst part of the test was sitting in the waiting room for an hour thinking about how much work I had to do that day. I got my results a few days later and I passed.

  • I have mine scheduled for tomorrow morning. Not looking forward to it. Scheduled it for as early as possible so I'll be waking up at 6:30 to drink the juice.
  • I feel like most people have it at 28 weeks, but they had me do it at 24 weeks. It was the 1 hour glucose test. I didn't have to fast - just no sugary foods 2 hours before. The drink was gross (think Gatorade with 3x the sugar), but luckily the bottle wasn't that big. The worst part was they did the glucose blood draw first - no problem - but then the tech was like, oh shoot, I was also supposed to get a vial to test your antibodies since you're Rh-. So she took blood from my other arm and did a terrible job! I still have a bruise 5 days later. But the great news is I passed!!!

  • I'll take mine in 2-3 weeks. I've always failed the one hour test, so I've requested to just do the longer version instead of waiting and having to do it a 2nd time. I actually don't mind the drink, it's carbonated, so mostly just tastes like orange pop.
  • @WiFiMom2be‌ I think it depends on the Dr. I'm getting mine tomorrow and I am also gonna be at 24 weeks which is when my doctor does it...but other doctors in the same practice do it around 28 weeks. Not sure why. Glad to hear it's not so bad. I'm worried about holding down the drink. Glad to hear you passed that must be a relief.
  • Mine is on the 7th at 8am.  I'm not supposed to eat after midnight or have anything besides water.  I'm not looking forward to it based mainly on the time of day, that its a Monday, and that my little Monster kicks a storm up if I doesn't eat by 9am.  So I'll be hungry, tired and getting business from little Monster at the same time :(

  • No one told me anything one way or the other about fasting. I'm glad I read this thread--I'm going to give them a call to ask. If I have to fast, I'm moving that appointment up. It's at 1 in the afternoon right now. No way would I make it that long not eating.

  • Ok ladies, I just drank down the dextrose. I think I had completely psyched myself out but it's actually not as bad as I thought. I had the orange one and it kind of tastes like like tang with way too much powder. I thought it was going to be a lot thicker than it was. I can say it is so much better than the mixture you have to drink if you have ever had a colonoscopy (I have a history of colon cancer in my family and had to have one a few years ago due to bleeding). Just wanted to share since I know I've been freaking out about drinking this for a few days now because of the stories I have heard and I really didn't have to. So hopefully this eases some of your minds. Now I just hope for a negative test.

I took mine last week. Avoiding sugary things prior to the test was annoying (plain greek yogurt - yuck!) since I had an afternoon appointment. The drink was fine but I did feel a little jittery afterwards.

The nurse just called to tell me that I passed! No gestational diabetes! I am floored since I had it with DS1 and was positive that I will have it with this LO. Still planning to loosely follow the diet though since it helped with my weight gain for DS1 but relieved that I don't have to test 4 times a day.

I had to take the test early on and then again at the visit after this next one. The taste doesn't bother me but I tend to bottom out afterwards and feel like crap. I also do not have to fast for the 1 hour in just need to go easy on the carbs.
I was so excited I passed my 3 hr after failing my 1 hr but was told at my last appt I have to take the stupid thing again! Booooooo! I've done 5 hr tests before in the past so I'm not too bothered by it, I'm just pissed I have to take it twice, especially after being so excited about passing it. Now I have to worry again about passing a 2nd time. ARGH!

  • Mine is on Thursday and for some reason I am not doing the one hour but the 2 hour instead. I do have to fast. Trying not to get worked up about it.
  • I just had mine last Friday.  I was told that I didnt have to fast, just eat healthy and nothing sugary that day.  I got my results online Friday night and I passed!!   FYI, the last time I did this was 9 years ago.  The girl in the lab said they have improved on it since then.  It was still disgusting, but not nearly as bad as I remembered!

  • I'm not looking forward to it - and am now feeling weird as I don't have it scheduled. I had my 24 week appt and was given a sheet and told to take it to my local lab between 26-28 weeks. I was told they should know at the lab what to give me and to be sure someone is ready to take blood at the hour mark. I was told not to fast, that in fact fasting could cause me to fail it, but to eat a normal breakfast. Doctor didn't say anything about avoiding an overly sugary breakfast and said I can eat my yogurt and granola per normal but sounds like since the granola and yogurt both have sugar in them, I should maybe do something high protein instead - like some eggs or something that morning. Think I'm going to put a call into the nurse this week and check.

Anyways, I eat healthy so shouldn't be nervous but am, nonetheless as I do get a decent amount of sugar in my diet (more healthy sugar like from fruit, etc..but still)

    Lilypie - (urRB)

  • I hated the test last time and will not be doing it this time. Instead, I will be tracking my sugars for a week (26-27 weeks pregnant), testing them 4 times a day. My doctor is happy with this compromise, as it should provide the answer (do I have GD) without me having to innundate my body with sugar or fast.
ETA: Fasting or not depends on if your doctor orders the 1-hour test (old standard) or the 2-hour test (newer standard because it avoids many of the false-positives that result from the 1-hour test and provides answers with just 1 test -- instead of getting a + on the 1 hour and having to go back for the 3 hour).  For the 2 hour test, you do have to fast.
theresat858 - Hmmm - interesting on 1-hour versus 2-hour - seems to  me it sounds like all the docs should switch to the 2-hour if there are a lot of false positive. Should I be asking my doctor if they would consider just jumping to the 2-hour?

    Lilypie - (urRB)

  • I took it a few weeks ago.  The non fasting 1 hour wasn't bad - luckily, it was at the same time as my regular appointment so I just had to show up a little early to chug the orange drink and stay a few minutes later to get my blood drawn.  The 3 hour was a different story but what can you expect with staying in a waiting room for three hours straight.

Bring a non sugary snack with you and leave it in your car for after you finish the test.  For the one hour test, it was my normal morning snack.  For the three hour, I brought pineapple juice (as I have issues with sugar crashes and knew that this would get some glucose into my system quickly) and several ounces of cheese to eat before I left the parking lot.

Thank for posting about the 2 hour test.  I was feeling like an odd duck for having been scheduled for the 2 hour!

I don't mind the fasting because we are starting the test at 7am so I will be able to eat around 9:30 which isn't far from when I regularly eat breakfast.

  • Ok, I just called my doctor's office and apparently we don't do the 2-hour. :(  They do the standard 1-hour and then the 3-hour if you fail. Apparently they only schedule the 3hour - the 1-hour they just give you a sheet and send you to the lab (they say to go somewhere between week 26-28) and have you do it there...fun, fun. So, if I get to the lab and its packed, I'll probably have to leave and come back.

When I mentioned the many false positives of the 1-hour, the nurse said - well that's why we have the 3-hour.... I like my doctor's office, but that is just silly.

    Lilypie - (urRB)

  • Mine is in 4 weeks. I was told not to eat anything after midnight, but then to eat a well balanced (not sugary) breakfast, then nothing after I drink the stuff. I hope it goes well. I will also have my Rh shot that day :/

  • I had to take one early on in the pregnancy (I guess b/c I am high risk w/ twins) and it sucked. I failed the one hour and had to take the 3 hour. My next 1 hour is in a week and I am dreading it. I hated the drink part the most!!!

Great question - would love to hear what you ladies think about that too. Also - I was told I can take mine any time between 26-28 weeks. I was tempted to wait but now thinking I'll just go in next week (26 weeks) and get it over with. But now reading about folks who failed the 1-hour test taking it early - makes me wonder if I should wait an extra week or even wait till 28 weeks. Does a week or two matter? Any thoughts?

For the first question - eat a normal breakfast if you are allowed to eat.  You don't want to "fool" the test. Getting a false negative is VERY dangerous for your pregnancy and your baby.  Trying to fool the test by eating something different than usual is a bad idea.

You are more likely to develop GD the later in your pregnancy that you are. This is why the women who were tested early for reasons of being high risk are usually tested again at 28 weeks.

This. I'm nervous about passing it but I never understand the thought process behind trying to 'trick' the test...if I have it, I want to know.

My midwife also suggested a protein-rich breakfast, but she said it would help avoid the crash and sickness afterwards.
