Nursery furniture question

Hey gals- FTM here and we have just started shopping for baby girl's nursery. We found some furniture that we like, but my question is: what all do we really need furniture-wise, and what can we expect to pay? The set below comes with the crib, double dresser and hutch, which we would use as a stand alone bookcase for $1300. Is that obscene? It's beautiful in person and we love it- just don't want to overpay or end up needing a ton more furniture than this! image

Re: Nursery furniture question

  • I don't know much about prices, but does the crib convert to a toddler bed? I think all you would really need in addition and it's 100% personal preference but something like a glider or rocking chair, they can be lifesavers

In DDs room I had/have a crib that converts to toddler bed ($100 @ikea), large Ikea Dresser, and a glider. Her changing pad went on top of the dresser. I haven't needed a book self or organizer in there until recently when I converted her crib. And she has a large closet and that's where I hung her shoes/dresses.

ETA: *I* didn't feel the need to buy an expensive crib because the Ikea one did the same exact thing as the others for way cheaper. And I like that it drops pretty low to the ground so there is no way in hell my kid could climb out. And she is pretty tall. Just my 2 pennies on expensive cribs. But every person has different taste so to each their own.

  • @JaymeeLH‌ yes, it does convert to a toddler, day, and full size bed! So I should have mentioned we will probably have her use this set for quite awhile! Or if we have another one soon we could use it again as it's fairly gender neutral. And yes we are planning on a glider as well!!

  • Regardless of the price, the furniture you picked is beautiful!

  • I think it is beautiful. Would you use the dresser as a changing station and then convert it to a hutch later?

  • Has anyone purchased a made in USA crib? I'm concerned about out of country's standards for lead, toxic paint, etc..

  • @Jessie333‌ yes, that is the plan! @pooky08‌ that is so sweet! And awesome that it held up so well!! We are definitely hoping for something that we can get a lot of use out of!

  • What brand is the crib? From what we've been looking at 1300$ for that type of set is reasonable. We're looking at Munire or Pali lines primarily because we like their construction.  Real wood and dovetail joints on dressers.  Both also are highly rated.

I have a crib that was made in the USA and Greenguard certified that I bought for DS. It is by Young America (by Stanley), but I heard they recently went out of business. You might be able to find some floor models on clearance. I highly recommend the brand.

  • We were planning to get a crib and maybe a glider. We gave a large closet and a dresser in there already that DH is going to share with baby and just installed a large built in.

  • Great questions! I was thinking a 4-in-1 crib (similar to yours), a dresser to serve as a changing table, and a glider/ottoman and side table. Anything s/he needs later on, I'll pick io

  • To be honest, I spent a lot on DS's furniture too. Retrospect I wouldn't have spent as much on the crib. Yes it converts but I would have probably preferred to pick out a different head board or just let DS pick out a race car bed or character toddler bed. I wouldn't have cared if someone told me this at the time bc I was SO excited to decorate his room. It's totally up to you though, and I think it's beautiful. Like other PP have said you'll want a glider/rocker. A toy shelve would be nice and you're all set! GL!
  • That looks like the same brand as my daughters crib. Hers is a Capretti crip, the Toscana version that converts from a crib, to a toddler bed with a full rail which I loved, and a full bed. That was $1500, plus we got a matching tall dresser and changing table. Seems really expensive but my dad is a Didect Buy member so he ended up getting the crib for $650, and that was the most expensive item. We LOVE her furniture set, it's really well made and she has a gorgeous bed for a loooooooong long time. So for us, it was worth the $$ for something nicer
  • Our double dresser and convertible crib with conversion rails for DD was worth about 1800, although we paid wholesale. I think it's probably the dumbest thing we spent that much money on. It's scratched and DD doesn't give a shit if it's solid wood and dovetail joints. The only saving grace is hopefully it lasts for 30 years and she can use it for her babies some day. These babies are getting ikea furniture all the way.

  • We didn't buy our DD a crib until she was ready to be put in it, if that helps. Maybe, you won't feel so rushed and just take your time and look around. We used a bassinet and changed her diapers on our bed for the first 6 months. It's completely up to you though, cause it is really beautiful.
  • mine will be slightly more expensive actually :/ However, I have a 20% off coupon that I'm hoping can be used on furniture.  And another that says $100 furniture.  If it is a BRU or BBB make sure you sign up online or in store so they send you coupons before you take the plunge.

  • We went back and forth between really upscale expensive convertible sets and more modest furniture. We ultimately decided to go with IKEA because I wanted clean, modern lines. And, if we want to get something more specific to our little guy's personality or bunk beds or something fun, then we will feel like we got our money's worth out of the IKEA stuff and can move on and we won't feel like we have to use the expensive convertible set until leaves for college in order to justify the cost! I love our Gulliver crib and the changing table/dresser we picked out and we didn't spend much money at all. We did splurge on the Little Castle glider, though.

  • That's a beautiful set.  If it works for you and your DH financially, I say go for it.  We're hoping to spend less, and here's what is on our nursery furniture list.  Our 2nd bedroom is kind of small and we need to keep the closet in there as DH's suit closet, so we're having to get creative:

    -convertible crib
-twin bed (we got this free from a colleague who was moving - woohoo)
    -glider/rocker
-dresser (with closed drawers) with changing table pad on top
-some sort of hanging baskets or under crib storage for diapers/wipes
    -wall book shelf/shelves

Even with using hanging/wall storage, we're not going to have a lot of extra floor space.  Some may say the twin bed is unnecessary, but we really feel like we need some sort of parent sleep space in there.

  • I got bought the Restoration Hardware Marlowe crib (retails for $899) for $150 through a local swap group (including the toddler conversion kit that is another $150 retail). We have a long ikea Hemnes dresser and nighstands that I am going to "hack" to match the Marlowe dresser. My sister has beautiful recliner/glider with matching nursing stool that my mother bought for her which she is giving me (we will just get a new slip cover made). So we are only adding a bookcase and maybe a toy box and we are done. I picked up a new rug already. So we are looking to complete the entire nursery for under $1000 including replacing doors and painting.
  • PSA- if you're going to buy a convertible, and plan on actually converting it- buy the pieces NOW. Many crib styles change and rotate and they obviously don't keep the conversion kits around after they've changed things.
