Hi ladies! So I am doing some research as my healthcare company covers a breast pump (some standard type - "Not the Mercedes Benz" as informed by today's healthcare rep). Originally they were just going to cover the rental but now they only offer the purchase of one. Anyways... wondering if you have a recommendation for which one and why. I have a little bit of time before I can order it but I figured I should be well informed. I'm a little overwhelmed with all the options.

  • Mine doesn't cover anything so something is better than nothing. If you don't like it you can always have it as a back-up to the Mercedes Benz model!

I have a Medela PISA double electric. I had a lot of supply issues so I'm not sure I'm the best to give a recommendation, but it seemed to work well. It was comfortable and easy to use. Since our insurance (different insurance that when I got my Medela) covers pumps I'm thinking of trying a new one, specifically the Hygeia Q. Anyone have one???

  • I don't know particulars about that Medela, but I do know that Medelas are top-rated.  I haven't heard anything negative about the Ameda, and I'm fairly certain that's the one my hospital has in their pharmacy.  I would go with either of those.
  • I think it depends on how much pumping you're going to be doing, I just had the Lansinoh manual pump and it was all I needed.

(Even though I probably could've just sat with a cup under my boob. My supply was ridiculous and I leaked like crazy)

  • The Ameda Purely Yours. I like the closed system, and have never had any issues with it (have used it for two babies so far). I recommend a Simple Wishes handsfree pumping bra-it's the best!

  • I received an Ameda free through my insurance last pregnancy and will get a new one this pregnancy as well. I did have them replace various parts because I felt like the suction wasn't as good after 7 months, which they did for free. But, looking back it may have been that my breasts changed and I needed different sized flanges. Anyway, their customer service was very good no hassle they just sent me replacement parts when I called. They were very helpful. I also like the closed system.

I've also tried a basic Medela personal pump and Medela and Ameda hospital grade pumps and I can't say I really noticed much of a difference between the two brands.

I also recommend the simple wishes pump bra and a nursing tank combo for those pumping at work. It's nice not to feel so naked while you are pumping. I wore nursing tanks under all my work clothes and then just folded it down and wore the pump bra over it while pumping hands free. Any pump can be hands free with a pump bra it's just not as easy to walk around while pumping because the pump is bigger and although my Ameda can also run on batteries, the suction is better while plugged in.

I considered the Medela Freestyle so it would be easier to pump while making dinner or getting ready (I exclusively pumped) but some of the reviews I read on Amazon indicated that the suction was not quite as good as the pumps you plug in. I always had supply issues and I didn't want to take the risk of even a small dip. However, I do know someone that is very happy with her freestyle.

As someone else mentioned Ameda parts are not readily available in the stores right now so it's good to plan ahead and order them before you need them of you do get an Ameda.

  • I used a Pump In Style. Parts are easy to find even in my small town except I had to special order flanges for my freakish dinner plate nips. Luckily they shrunk back down, ridiculous.

I found no need for a pumping bra or even a nursing bra. I just slipped the flanges inside my regular demi bras and that worked fine for me. I'd try it out before dropping a bunch on a funky pumping bra. I didn't really care for nursing bras that much either. They always got lumpy and weird after washing.

I just cut slits into an old bra and pushed the parts through. Worked great.

  • My company provides Medela pumps at no cost.  With DS I got the freestyle.  This time we are going with the PISA.

I was thinking about this last night. It can be plugged in too - I wonder if that made a difference to anyone. I wish we could ask reviewers these things!
I didn't read through all the responses, but just based on the snipped quotes here thought I'd share my experience.

I had the Freestyle with DS and am going with the PISA this time for this exact reason.  The suction with the Freestyle wasn't terrible, but it wasn't great either.  I got frustrated with it a lot.  Also, I almost ALWAYS had it plugged in, unless I was in an airport bathroom or somewhere where an outlet or adapter just was not possible, so I think it's just an issue with the pump itself rather than a battery thing.

  • I'm having the medela mini electric and it works all fine, no problems. You can use it on electric power or on battery. Easy to cleaning and put together.
