Anyone's pets sense labor coming on?

I've searched and found this topic in boards from previous years and just thought it'd be interesting  for the pet-parents with outside babies since there are already discussions about pets sensing pregnancy in general. It's not particularly scientific and I'm not trying to predict labor through it, just wondered what other people had noticed, if anything, for curiosity's sake.

We started out with 2 cats, 2 dogs and 2 horses then adopted a cat and rehomed a dog. The horses are not particularly fussed for any human not carrying their food bucket but will follow me down the fence whenever I'm out by their area and always come over to the side where I park my car and have done all through the pregnancy.
The animals all started acting weird around the beginning of the pregnancy then mostly settled down (the horses it's hard to say as I don't really deal with them much). Recently though, they've started acting weird all over again.
The recently adopted cat, who adored me at first and always had to be touching me, now likes to know where I am but won't sit within 3 ft of me. He's never far away, still lets me pet him when I'm stood up but if I sit near him, he moves away and he sleeps on the far side of the bed from me.
The oldest cat, who would take being petted if I went up to her has now started coming to me and actually sat in my lap once, which is unheard of.
The smallest cat, who was always friendly but a little nervous, has come for cuddles various times and even slept curled up next to me which she never normally does.
The dog just stares at me. Sometimes he wanders over, looks at me for a few minutes then goes away again. This happens throughout the day.
The other dog freaked out about me being pregnant and destroyed a lot of my clothes that he'd steal from the laundry but he's gone now.
All of this has been happening over the last 3-4 days so I wondered if it's because labor is getting close? Nothing else has changed to make the creatures act weird.

My previous pregnancy, my beloved cat (a sweet-natured ball of fur who was 18 and going senile) had to be put to sleep halfway through and the new cat was outdoor/extremely antisocial so I didn't have any pets nearby last time to know how they react to labor but I'm interested to hear what other people's animals did, if anything, right before labor started.

  • People ask me about this too. I'm curious to see what others say. My puppies are so cuddly and loving all the time it's hard to see a difference. The older one follows me a bit more. But I think it's because I may spoil them a little bit!

  • My male dog, Osi, has been up my butt! He follows me every where I go in the house and stays by me. He is actually on the bed right now with me. If I leave to go get some water, he will follow. He even barges into the bathroom if I don't close the door all the way and will lay by my feet. He definitely knows that something is about to happen. Animals have that sixth sense for sure.

I think I just have too much time on my hands being able to notice things like this.
The dog isn't overly different, he's looked at me with concern the whole way through but all 3 cats have suddenly started acting odd.

The oldest cat, my husband's cat, only started tolerating me when I became pregnant and now she'll walk past him to get to me. She's sat behind me right now while he's downstairs.
  • I have two cats and like you said, they seemed to act differently at the beginning of this pregnancy, and then settled down after a couple of months. In the last two weeks though, they've been acting suuupperr needy again! I do wonder what it is they're picking up on!
  • Here's Osi snuggling with my bump right now. He's passed out. Sorry it's dark!

  • Awww Huskies, such beautiful dogs!

None of our furries have been interested in my belly at all but the dog and the new cat (both the boys) have been obsessed with my feet in the last couple of weeks. The dog will sniff and lick them (I hate this) and the cat will sniff, rub his head on and roll/lay on them but there were no changes like new soap or new shoes that might change the scent.
  • I haven't noticed my pups acting too differently. They are always super needy and need to be right by me. One of my cats has been laying on my stomach recently. The other cat is a jerk and only thinks about himself. I forgot to close the room to the nursery the other day and I went up there yesterday and my girl dog pooped in there. She has been potty trained for years. So I wonder if that means something. She got in big trouble.
  • My cat that I have had for almost 4 years normally doesn't sleep next to me or do the cuddling thing and has been doing such for the past few weeks.  She also constantly follows me around like she is guarding me or something to that extent.

  • Our pup has always been my suck but he has become even more of a suck to me and follows me everywhere I go. If I shut a room door he will lay outside the hall infront of it and wait for me he is always beside me and laying beside me. He has to be in the same room. I believe animals have a sense when hormones change and have heard of peoples animals sensing labor before the woman and acted weird. Its interesting to see how things act. Recently our pup has been sleeping under the crib in our room I think that may be just because its colder under there.

The picture was taken two days before I went into the hospital for premature labor contractions, the day before i went in he was also stuck next to me the same way. Thankfully they have stopped but in the waiting and wondering game now.

Our dog has been so clingy lately. He follows me, literally right on my heels, throughout the day so that he can be in the same room as me. He likes to put his head on my belly, but he did that before it resembled a basketball ;) DH gives him his food because it smells so terrible to me, but after that, he's back to being a momma's boy!

  • I don't think my dogs have even a clue that things are about to change. They were super needy before and still are, I don't think they could be more about me than they already are! My Boston likes to put her head on my belly, but that's only because it's there and easy for her to beg for attention with. Has nothing to do with there being a baby I'm there. :)

  • My cat is a snob. She wants affection on her terms, and refuses to cuddle. But as soon as I got preggers, she became obsessed with me, within the months leading up til now (36 weeks)m she has gotten closer and closer to me. Where I sleep, she will sleep. When I head to the bathroom, she waits, if I take too long, she wails at the door... if I sleep too long, she will nuzzle at my face.... if I have contractions, she hoovers- it is sooooo odd!!!! And it gets irritating at times!!!! Especially based off her previous attitude
  • My one year old male lab has definitely been very clingy lately, but he's been clingy with both my DH and with me, so I don't know what's up with him.

  • Seems like more animals than not have changed behavior to be come clingier and a few don't seem to notice/care.

If anyone's pets started acting differently again before labor started, how far in advance was it that the behavior changed?  Was it gradual or sudden?
Are they boys or girls/does it matter?

I've noticed the boys (1 cat, 1 dog) both do some behaviors (feet obsession and watching), the girls, both cats, do a different behavior (suddenly very affectionate and cuddly) and the female horse is more interested than the male - he loses interest as soon as he realises I don't have food but she stays near the fence as close as she can get to me when I'm out there even though she doesn't care when anyone else is near the fence.

Our GSD boy has been much more of a Momma's boy since I've been pregnant and he touches and pokes at my belly with his head and paws.

I'm 36 weeks. In the past 2 weeks he has become super annoying. Will NOT leave me alone. If I shut a door, he sits on the other side and cries. Sometimes he will stop if I scream his commands, sometimes I just have to ignore him. At night we have started having him sleep in the hallway, not because he's just not allowed in our room, but because he got fleas and I was trying to keep our room (which the baby will be sharing) flea free. And he lays against the door. If I get up to go to the bathroom at night I have to fight with him to shut the bathroom door and fight to keep him from coming into our room when I go back. I've been having lots of contractions over the past few days and tonight (tmi) pink tinge when I wiped. I think he knows something is coming.

My shih tzu my first pregnancy was indifferent.
  • My frenchie follows me around more. I can't walk out of a room without her coming to find where I went. She will make sure all is well and go about her business again. She does follow me to the bathroom and wants in there with me. She sits at my feet and stares at me.
When I had DS, I went to L&D and didn't come home for a few days after that. DH would text me all night saying she just sat in bed and stared at the door waiting for me to come in all night. Poor dog and poor DH for not getting any rest after I had DS.
When we come in from being out of the house for a while, she completely ignores DH and DS, comes straight to me and then goes to them. She used to do the opposite with me being greeted last. I'm pretty sure she thinks I'm gonna leave her.
I always joke with DH about how we can never get a divorce for the sake of the dog, she'd lose her damn mind.

  • We have 3 dogs. 2 of them are too self involved to notice, or they know and just don't care. #3 loves kids, and I'm convinced he's the only one who knows what is going on. He follows me around all day and has been from the very beginning. We set up the bassinet, which happens to be a hand me down, and he sleeps in between me and the bassinet every night now, even looking inside multiple times to check it out (I'm assuming it smells to him like the baby who was last in it). Again, he loves babies and kids more than pretty much anything so I think he's anxious.

He's also very intuitive. He will bark all night and we'll find out controlled burns are happening a few miles away, he'll be alert before we can even hear sirens, he always checks to make sure everyone's home... If any of them were to start acting weird with impending labor, he would. Heck, if he started acting off, I would ASSUME that's what was happening. He's very cautious and caring, especially for being so young still... I think he's going to end up abandoning SO and I when the baby is here to be by her side 24/7
  • With 3 dogs (a lab, Havanese, and a Frenchy) only the Havanese has drastically changed behavior and even then it is in waves. When I first got pregnant I could not get her off of me! She would be SO bad just to get on me - apparently I wasn't incubating the baby properly and she had to be curled on my stomach. She actually jumped onto the dinning room table one night and ran across it to jump into my lap after scratching the sh*t out of my leg to get me to let her up didn't work. She would scale the backs of couches to get to me, howl, it was pretty nuts. Once things settled down after maybe 8-10 weeks she would only get clingy again when there was a real growth spurt going on. Over 37wks now and she hasn't gotten clingy yet....VERY curious if she will be stuck to me when its almost time. Almost hoping she will as this is my first and her heads up would be appreciated :-)
  • Oh and I will add that other peoples pets react differently as well. Some are completely indifferent and some get protective/ try to heard me/ UBER cuddly/ won't listen to their owners and so on. I think it all depends on the animal and their temperment.

With my first our lab followed me around for about 2 days straight before I went into labor. The day of u couldn't go to the bathroom alone. I was never out of his sight for a second that day. This pregnancy he likes to be close to me too. When he gets super clingy I'm going to take it as labor is starting
  • My Morkie has been interesting to say the least.  I think she misses her mommy's lap.  She has been my fur baby for the last two years, and since the disappearance of my lap she has started sitting with my DH and just staring at me.  Only at night does it appear that she gets near me.  She will sleep curled up around my belly or on the wedge pillow, but once she figures out that I am awake she will move away.

I have a cat and a dog.  The cat has been cuddling with me for years.  Our dog, an English Springer Spaniel named Hoosier, rarely ever got on the bed with me before.  In the last two months, she has been waiting by the side of the bed and the second DH gets out of bed, she is up next to me giving me cuddles.

  • Mine avoided me for about a month. Would follow DH around, and actually ignore me if I called or tried to get his attention. Now he's very cuddly, and likes to have his head on my belly. He's gotten very obedient with me, also...less so with DH. He thinks it's funny, and is always telling the baby "You hear that? Mom's the boss...don't forget it."

  • We have 3 cats and the older two haven't really acted different. The younger one always loved to lay on my belly (even before I was pregnant) until she got kicked when I was 22 weeks and hasn't wanted anything to do with me since. In the last couple days, she's started wanting to lay on me again and has been going wherever I go so maybe she senses something? I wouldn't mind if she was right!

  • FTM here so no previous experience but my cat is a big fat weirdo all the time. However, he became even weirder in the past few weeks. He has to know where I am at all times, and is never very far from me. He licks my belly all the time. The creepiest is when I turn my head and find him sitting there still as a statue starting at me wide eyed, who knows how long he's been there.

I keep telling myself it's because he knows something is about to happen. I mean even though humans have instincts and all that I feel like we rarely listen to them, whereas animals actually listen to the things they sense.

Apart from the touching (he refuses to touch me unless I'm stood up, then I can pet him) this is what our newest cat does, the only male.

I got a bit of a shock just now when I went to lie back and he'd sneaked in and gone to sleep on the bed behind me which is odd since he's refused to sleep near me in months.
Who knows why he's in here now - if I go quiet for a few days,  assume I've gone into labor!
  • My dog definitely knew last time. She is normally attached to dh, but the 2 days before she followed me everywhere and would not leave my side.

  • Not labor related, but one of our dogs has become much, much needier in the 3rd tri.  Normally, when I put their food out for them they'd both run to their bowls and vacuum it up.  But quite a few times lately, our bigger dog would go to her food then leave it to go check on where I or DH are at.  So to get her to eat one of us has to go stand by her bowl and pet her.  She's gotten more independent again lately and will eat without us having to be with her, but she definitely knows something is up.

Now if only I could get her to be more careful...she's a huge klutz and has nearly tripped me several times this pregnancy!

  • No idea whether it means anything (yet) but:
all of yesterday and some of this morning, the smallest cat was sitting near me and coming up to me, which is new. Usually she'll only come up if I'm already near her and she won't sit nearby for more than a minute and that would only happen once a day/every few days. She slept right by me for part of the night, too which she's never done before.

This morning, the boy cat - who does not do lap sitting EVER on anyone - was sat in the chair, snuggled up to my leg while I ruffled his fur and he stayed there for about 15 minutes.

I had a crampy belly all night so maybe they were just reacting to that.
  • Our weimeraner has always been a mommas boy but he is also very independent. Lately he has been much more of a snuggler and our lab mix now likes to put his head on my belly! Here's a picture because I can't stand how adorable they are

  • So, after having pets acting weird, slow labor started on Thursday and is still going on.

I have absolutely no idea if the animals knew/know or even care but they're still acting weird and the smallest cat started always being close to me from Thursday mid afternoon, right before the slow labor started.

I have a 12 year old male cat, Flagstaff. Typically he loves my boyfriend and generally ignores me. When I was first pregnant, Flags had to be lying on my lap...constantly. He calmed down during the middle of the pregnancy but lately he is OBSESSED with me and acts so strange around the BF (runs away when he gets home, acts as though he is terrified of him....what a weirdo!)  If I end up moving to the couch in the middle of the night, he wakes up and immediately has to lie on me or be right by my side. As I write this, he is sitting beside me on the couch practically hugging the corner so he doesn't fall off.

It will be interesting to see how he acts when Spencer arrives :)
  • My dogs didn't really do anything until we started setting up the nursery. A lot of changes going on in the house and they started to get destructive. The destroyed an area rug. Now they're kenneled again when we leave the house.

In the last 2 weeks or so they barely leave my side. Normally the sleep in the living room on their bed, but they've even been sleeping most, if not all of the night, on the floor next to my side of the bed. I think they know what's up.
    BabyFruit Ticker

  • The boy cat, who seemed to not be all that fussed for me since settling in to the house, actually slept on the bed with me last night, close enough that I could pet him. He's currently laid close enough that if  try to get up and leave, he'll know but far enough away that we're not *quite* in each other's personal space. This since the contractions got a little closer together so I think even though he's the dumbest animal we have (he's the one that runs into the door while it's open) he probably knows what's going on.
