My how things have changed in 5 years:
Skin to skin - they are all about it there.
Baby never leaves the room. When DD #2 was born, the nursery window was full of babies. This visit it was empty.
Not gonna lie, I liked the fact I could tell the nurses to take her to let me sleep, and they would bring her to me to nurse.
They highly discourage supplementing formula. It took me 3+ days for my milk to come in. Um, baby girls were hungry. And my poor nipples were raw after so much suckling.
This time around will be interesting.
I'm really debating how long to wait to go in this time. The pushing part was easy and fast with #2, but my body tends towards really long early and active labor. I had consistant contractions for 24 hours with dd#2. I went in and was only 3cm. I don't want to wait too long, for fear of delivering in dh's car. Maybe I'll get lucky this time around.
Anywho, just my 2 cents - go on the tour even if your a 2nd or 3rd+ time mom and it's been a while. It was all different at my hospital.
Re: Hospital visit/tour - interesting tidbits from a TTM
-right after birth and after the cord has been cut they put the baby on mom's chest/hand baby to mom and not whoever else is in the room (they used to wait to give the baby to mom so they could stitch mom up and such)
-baby gets a full checkup while on mom
-baby stays with mom, they allow baby to go to the nursery but try to discourage it
-quiet time at the hospital when they restrict visitors, turn all the lights down ect
-swaddling no longer with the arms in the blanket, arms are to be out so baby can self sooth
-pacis are only given if mom OKs it.
during postpartum you get several consultations - lactation consultants, pediatricians ect.
Sounds like our hospital. I'm delivering at a new hospital this time around, so I can't compare to see if anything has changed in 2 years.
With my 1st I had him taken to the nursery at night, by the time I had my 2nd not even 2 full years later they had done away with that and you had to have them in your room 24/7. Honestly, I didn't get any more rest with the baby gone than with the baby with me. They still constantly interrupted me even when my son wasn't there the 1st time. Instead of baby waking me up to nurse, they brought him to me. Or else they came in take my BP and temp for the 100,000 time.
This is big reason why I'm hoping to go home within 24-36 hours this time around, which would mean only staying one night instead of 2. I got NO REST in the hospital. It was terrible. I'd rather be home so DH can help out a little.
