XP: Awful eczema??

XP from 24 months+:

We've called the pedi about DS's rash and they think it is eczema but I am tempted to take him in anyway to see if they think it is worth giving him some kind of stronger lotion or something for it. Per their instructions we use hydrocortisone cream 2x a day and aveeno eczema cream as often as needed. When we keep up with that, his legs and arms clear up within 4-5 days. But if we start cutting back on the hydrocortisone it comes back with a vengeance. His legs look AWFUL right now, plus he has some spots on his arms, feet, and I just noticed one on his neck too. He's completely unphased so I know they don't itch or anything but seriously they look terrible. And I don't know that applying that much hydrocortisone cream so often is the answer!! Obviously I will be checking with the pedi again but anyone else have a LO with awful eczema and if so how did/do you treat it?

Re: XP: Awful eczema??

  • DD's eczema started with a small rash on her face and arms then spread to her entire body. This all happened a couple of months ago. We tried hydrocortisone cream and something stronger but I didn't feel comfortable using it that long. We took her to an allergist who wouldve done allergy testing but she was so red. They recommended we switch to ALL free detergent and change all her soaps/body washes to dye free (we use cetaphil and aquafor). Even though we used johnson and johnson since birth, LO's can still develop a reaction to it down the road.

Her eczema eventually cleared up. We also used those aveeno soothing bath treatments which i think helped tremendously. Now, after every bath we use a super thick cetaphil moisturizing cream. The allergist told us that lotions are helpful because they create a barrier against allergies because our skin is so absorbent. We also vacuum quite frequently as well as buy expensive filters.

I would try switching up your LO's care products to all dye/fragrance free and then see an allergist if it doesn't clear up within a month or two. It took us a little over a month for her to clear up. They also said that her eczema started early because they usually see this happen around age 2.

Both of my LOs had really bad eczema and it was tied into their food allergies. The allergist had us use Cerave body wash for baths and the cream (the one in the tub, not the lotion) 2xs per day. She also had us start a dose of Zyrtec to help. Once we got DD's skin cleared up we were able to do the allergy testing. With DS I knew the signs and got him into the allergist sooner so he didn't have to suffer like his sister did.

  • DD's eczema cleared up using hydrocortisone 10 and then I switched to vanicream for matinence.  You can get it at target.
  • We have found a little natural sunlight to be amazingly helpful for eczema. Yup, unfiltered!

Being a Peds ER nurse I see a ton of wee ones with eczema,  also my son, has very sensitive skin, and maybe a mild eczema on his cheeks per our pedi.  So I try to give advice to my patients, but take it with a grain of salt because all of our little ones are different.  Anyway, we give him Aveeno Eczema Oatmeal baths as needed, and use Aveeno Eczema lotion all over his body daily.... Religiously. We also use all dye/fragrance free detergents on not just his, but all of our clothes. He does not go to daycare, so my family washes their clothes in All Free & Clear as well.  It works like a charm for us. Good Luck, If nothing works, I would definitely look into allergy testing.

  • I have pretty severe eczema and my DD is following suit. All of our products are dye/fragrance free. I use Tide Free & Clear, Bounce Free for dryer sheets (none at all during a flare up), California Baby or Aveeno products in the tub, etc.

The Aveeno Eczema Baby lotion is great for maintenance mode (I use it myself).

I agree with others though, see if you can get allergy testing done. I have to stay away from certain foods, as does DD. Also, Huggies cause my DD to have an outbreak. Totally random.

  • My daughter was born with a couple of patches on her hands. She also gets it on her neck, tummy, arms and legs. Have you switched to all fragrance free products for baby? Do you wash all new clothes before baby wears them? Also only give a bath every 2-3 days.
Have you tried coconut oil? I love that stuff. I grease my daughter down in it every morning and evening. During the day at daycare they use lotion 2-3 times a day and lotion her during diaper changes. I give them the same lotion(s) as you - the Aveeno Eczema or Moisturizing lotion. But using the coconut oil lets me cut down on using the hydrocortizone cream. My pedi also recommended that only use the cream for 2-3 days and/or until the redness/rash heals. Then stop using until it reappears. There are a few different types of eczema so pinpointing which kind your daughter has will probably help. My daughter's is more weather related.
Try the coconut oil :) You can get it at the grocery store. I usually get the organic or refined type.
  • My 18 month old DD has eczema which only recently reappeared due to the warm weather. All winter long she was fine. So obviously hers is weather related too. After reading this I am going to try coconut oil since I had bought some to rub on my belly for stretch marks. We currently use Aveeno cream for eczema but she is still pretty red behind her knees and elbows in particular.
  • We also use Aveeno after a rash popped up from using the Johnsons Head to Toe wash.  I had already loved Aveeno for myself since it was the only face moisturizer that didn't make me break out in any way.  We sometimes use Aquaphor for small rough/dry spots or scrapes but seem to keep dryness at bay with the moisturizing wash and lotion.  DD loves lotion time!  AND I make sure to only use Aveeno baby sunscreen too.  No issues since switching to this brand.
  • Usually just lurking, Aveeno aggravates my sons eczema. We have to use Derma Smooth which is RX and Hydrozyzine to keep in under control during breaks. There hasn't been a lotion for us that hasn't really agitated more.

I have found Derma smooth and aquaphor over the top of that with long cotton pj's at night seems to help.

  • Thank you all so much for your comments/advice. We do use the free & clear detergent and it definitely seemed like this all came about right after the weather got warmer.  We never had this problem during the winter!  His 2 year appt is coming up soon and I will ask about it then, since right now we've got it more managed with the eczema lotion.  I used hydrocortisone on just the affected spots twice a day for a few days along with the Aveeno Eczema lotion (that I used at like every diaper change) and while the rash is still there it's not blaringly red anymore and you can't even notice it unless you're right on top of him.  I will keep up with the Aveeno since that seems to help but will look into some of the other products mentioned.

  • Our dermatologist suggested using aquaphor or vaseline every day and especially right after baths.  She said the greasyness works better than any creams. We use free and clear laundry detergent and fragrance and dye free body wash.  We will use head and shoulders on his hair if we notice the eczema on his scalp.  Give a bath every few days, keep it short and warm.  Hot water can make it worse.  We only use the hydrocortozone cream when DS is really itchy.
  • My DS has has bad ezcema since day one. We bathe him 1-2 time per week. We use a loofah to get the dead skin off.we obky use babyganics bath wash. If we are flared up hydrocortisone and tons of aquafor. Also DS can't get to hot or it flares up.

  • My kids both have eczema.  My son has a skin disease that causes him to have no hair, which is paired with it.  We have to use Aveeno on him and Aveeno eczema cream.  We have hydrocortizone cream that we use, but only are told to use it 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off.  Another thing that I found was super helpful are LUSH bath melts.  They're all natural and they make his skin super moisturized.  We like dreamtime and you've been mangoed.

When his eczema was really bad, I used these for his baths when we couldn't use the cortizone cream.  They really helped with the eczema!
