Newbie with outside babies questions thread!

Ask away!

The newbie threads about pregnancy and labor were great, but now I have all sorts of silly FTM questions about this little bundle of joy (and confusion) that I am home with. I also feel like I was given info at the hospital but always when half asleep.

My Q's for my 8 day old:

Hiccups all the time, normal?

I am still wearing heavy overnight pads and steadily bleeding, normal? Typically when does that end?

Do I have to use the peri bottle all the time still when I go? I am over it.

Baby blues and random feels and crying, any tips to make this easier? Crunchy homemade suggestions even?

Baby still seems so little but my boobs feel empty after each feeding and we have lots of poopy diapers. Can I assume she is eating enough? Going back to pedi tomorrow to check on slightly raised bilirubin levels and will check there too.

City Mom's, have you been out much? Stroller issues? Wearing baby? I've only been out with DH (and only once) and am intimidated at the thought of doing it on my own. Wishing my car was not in a garage 15 minutes away...and that places had parking. Suburb living sounds tempting, eesh.

Re: Newbie with outside babies questions thread!

  • How much spitting up is normal after a feeding? When would it be considered excessive? LO spits up at least once if not multiple times during every feeding. Is this normal or possible reflux?

My ped said yes, normal :)

I am still wearing heavy overnight pads and steadily bleeding, normal? Typically when does that end?
I'm 2weeks PP and I'm still bleeding pretty consistently.

Do I have to use the peri bottle all the time still when I go? I am over it.
I use it still, but just cuz it makes me feel cleaner.

Baby blues and random feels and crying, any tips to make this easier? Crunchy homemade suggestions even?
I have no suggestions for this, but would like to know some lol

I have heard that as long as baby is making good poopy diapers, you can assume its all good unless told otherwise.

I'm not a city mom, but I have been into town with my boys already. A double stroller does not fair well in a department store. Oh and Wal-Mart sucks with twins. I had a lady literally stop in front of me, blocking my way, to ask about twins. I was already in a ton of pain (hadn't taken my Percocet that day and had been running around all day) so i looked at her, said in my not so nice tone "excuse me" and went around her. Ugh, people.
  • I have a question about baby gas. My LO seems to get gas pain at least once a day and she would scream and cry when the pain hits. She does get better after she poops or farts, but is there any way to make it go away faster or prevent it from happening? I tried to massage her tummy but i am not sure if its helping.

About the ergo baby... I tried to put a towel underneath her butt so she can sit up a bit more, instead of using the insert. It keeps the baby (and me) much cooler. I just make sure that her back is tightly supported.
  • @JulieSmiles‌ if it is happy spitting and LO is still pitting on weight you are fine. If it upsets LO or they start failing to gain weight you have a problem.

@irenewslee you can buy gas drops that can help. Look for simethicone as the active ingredient, they sell them every where and store brands work just as well as name brand.

@BMaidPlanner‌ city dweller here! We've used our baby ktan breeze almost every day. We've used the stroller once. The stroller just seems so giant in stores, etc. I also just prefer having him close and away from strangers hands.

Re: bleeding - at 8 days pp, I was still bleeding steadily. At 14, I've pretty much tapered off completely.

Eta: hiccups are totally normal but my pedi recommended that we burp really well. She said it will help with hiccups now and fussiness in a couple weeks.

  • This is more a mommy question... I found it harder to hold my pee after the baby, especially when i sneeze, a little is bound to come out. I thought this was only supposed to happen before, i guess after too?

After birth, the little leaks of pee are normal. Consult with your doctor if it becomes excessive. Just do the keels to re-strengthen. Took me a few weeks PP to feel more normal down there.
  • @BMaidPlanner‌ :

    Hiccups?
It was normal for me and my 1st born. Got better as he got older and the burping was easier.

    Bleeding?
Mine was pretty severe for about two weeks after.

    Peri bottle?
Not sure about the need part, but I used mine for a while after because it made me feel cleaner and helped with the hemorrhoids discomfort.

    Baby Blues?
I never dealt with this much myself, but just make sure you don't get sleep-deprived and try to do something just for you, without baby. Even if it's just a guilty pleasure TV show. a few of my friends who experienced this said it helped to feel like a person again, w/o baby for a bit. The fluctuations in hormones can get you for a while after. If BFing, the first major drop in supply after weaning will trigger some interesting responses too. Just make sure your feelings are not getting to PP depression level.

    Baby Eating Enough?
It sounds depressing to do, but weigh baby just before and again just after feeding... it's not bad if you have a baby scale, but can be if you do the weigh yourself then weigh you both and subtract to find baby weight method. My 1st born had high levels and I had to supplement for a few days, but just pay attention to the number of diaper changes in the meantime.

    Taking Baby Out?
I'm not a city mom, but live in a busy suburban area near DC. Love my Ergo baby with insert. Also got a diaper backpack instead of messenger bag. Don't feel bad if it seems overwhelming to take baby out and around, took me until 3rd week before it felt normal. And I had to learn the hard way of trial - and - error before I figured out the difference berween true necessities for diaper bag, and things that will just weigh you guys down (physically of course).
  • @irenewslee‌ I found a baby massage video on you-tube specific to gas and it has done wonders for her gas pain (and make for large poopy diapers too) the past few days.

I read that while you're washing their hair, take the soft bristle brush and gently scrub their head. @emilyh107‌

  • @snuff9861‌ I burn sometimes. I went in thinking it was a uti and was told it was normal to feel that for a while. It's basically a bruised urethra/clitoris. Loads of fun. Mine is slowly feeling better and I'm almost three weeks pp.

I've had a burning sensation for a few weeks, yet it doesn't feel like a UTI burn.  I'm assuming it's trauma from my catheter, like @lilygrace48 said.  I'm hoping it gets better soon, otherwise I'll mention it at my 6 week appointment.

I asked our pedi about this today since I had the same concern. She said if it's more than half a feeding and she does it more than twice a day then to call.

I asked the pedi about the gas at her 1 week check up and she said gas drops are fine to give her. Since LO has bad gas a night the pedi recommended giving her the gas drops at her noon-ish feeding.
  • Deep Purple stretch marks and belly binding. (Especially for plus gals). Does anyone have tips for both? My marks itch like crazy and I use the EMAB oil and lotion I used during pregnancy but it's not getting better. Also, the skin is just so loose now. I think I am trying to worry about this stuff to stop focusing on my baby blues so much. Help distract me.

@MrsRahl‌ did you have binding tips or is my lack of sleep making me remember incorrectly?

  • @BMaidPlanner‌ I didn't get stretchmarks until 36 weeks but then I got them pretty bad on the under belly. Mine itch SO BAD - like I want to rip my skin off. My dr said it's the skin coming back together and there's no "magic bullet". Cortisone cream helps for about 30 seconds

  • LO uses me as a pacifier. I've tried 2 different pacifier and she doesn't like either. She can stay latched on to me asleep for up to an hour. Any suggestions on how to change this.

What I do when she uses me as a pacifier is pop her off and not move. Leave her nose to nipple for a couple minutes then move her if I need to.

I also finally found a pacifier that worked. I had to try four different types, but my boobs thank me.
Thanks I'm going to give this a try. Ill try a few different types of pacifiers before I give up.
  • @ELC252011‌ I thought I was having a hard time finding a pacifier LO liked, but it turns out I just wasn't being patient enough. I literally have to hold it in her mouth for what seems like forever. She fusses and acts like she hates it, she may even let out a little squeal cry, but eventually, after still holding it in her mouth, she will get a few sucks and realize it's not so bad. Then she is a pro. Now we can use pretty much any of the pacis we have. She's not picky after she gets over the initial fight over it!

Dd was 6# 3oz at her last checkup and our Boba4 says min weight is 7#. She has one more apt on Tuesday but I doubt she gained 13oz in a week and her next apt will be two months, should I wait until she is weighed at 2 months or how should I best figure out if she is ready?

I would go based on how much she gained in the time between check ups, and then use that as a standard for about how much she is gaining in a day. Say she gained 6oz since the last visit, wait the same amount of time between the visits and then assume she's big enough for it, but I definitley wouldn't wait till 2 months.
If you have a digital scale you could try to weigh her on it, or weigh yourself, then weigh yourself holding her to get an idea of her weight. Obviously all guesstimates, but if you go by those and then wait another week you should be more than fine.

I'm mobile so if it doesn't work I'll do it in the computer. It's still working for us-the massage. I do it a couple times a day.
  • @emilyh107 our ped recommended regular adult head and shoulders shampoo for her baths to prevent cradle cap. Havent tried it yet but figured I'd share!

  • My skin has been itchy and I noticed on some spots it looks like I have hives. I've barely been out of the house. Anyone else?

  • @SarahS11‌ thanks for that. I gotta try it. I usually just try it for a second, she will then spit it out and I assume she doesn't like it. I just have to try a little harder.
  • I had major itchy stretch marks on my under belly for a solid week post partum. I just out aquaphor on and tried my hardest not to scratch. It went away by the second week or so!

  • @BMaidPlanner‌ I've been extremely itchy ever since my stay at the hospital. I'm 3 wks pp. I can't seem to get relief and wherever I scratch I get these awful bumps. I had asked the nurse when I noticed it on my back and she said it was just because I've been in bed the whole time and sweating because I was on magnesium... But I am now doubting it was because of that if I'm still itching like crazy (EVERYWHERE!)
  • @nelleebelle‌ No medications. No new anything unless it's the butt paste or 98% natural baby lotion but I doubt both of those. It's on my arms, legs, like @Brijonunez‌ said but I was not on magnesium.

  • DD is 9 days old and I think I may now have a uti (had a catheter at the hospital). I've never had one before, so I'm not sure if that's what this is, I don't have any pain or burning while urinating, but a pretty consistent pain around my urethra/bladder. Could this still be a uti?

What's the protocol? Do I call my OB? Or a regular doctor?
  • @BMaidPlanner‌ @Brijonunez‌ it could be something called the PUPPP rash, those symptoms soud like mine.
Most women get it during pregnancy, but some get it PP, I would talk to your OB for sure.

@CJnKR2014‌ I will definitely talk to my OB 'cause this shizz is not the biz!
What do you do for relief?
  • @Brijonunez‌ ask if azo is okay to take if u are breastfeeding. It coats your urinary tract with an orange pain killer and stops the burning. It doesn't treat the infection but makes you comfortable. Antibiotics clear up the infection. Start chugging as much water as possible to help flush any infection....this is all while you wait for the on call ob to get back to you on a Sunday. Don't wait til Monday if it's that uncomfortable bc it can progress to a bladder or kidney infection if untreated.
  • @Brijonunez‌ honestly (and this sucks to have to tell you) there is no complete relief until it resolves. For those who get it when pregnant it goes away PP. I'm not sure about PP PUPPPs. To make it bearable i took benadryl, used lotion, and itch creme, BUT if you are BFing, you can't take benadryl! And benadryl was what helped most!!! So i would slather up with itch creme and take cool showers, NOT HOT THAT MAKES IT WORSE. Overnight when the itching gets really bad (thats when it was always the worst for me) keep ice packs by your bed. But make ssure, and this part is confusing, you keep it MOISTURIZED but DRY. As in, keep it lotioned/itch cremed up, but when you use an ice pack put a paper towel around it so it doesnt get wet as that makes it worse.

I really hope these tips work, and I'm so sorry you got it PP!! I was pretty much destined to get it as i am a ftm, had boys, and twins- all of which increase chances lol... but if my experience helps you feel some relief then it was worth it! I think there are steroid cremes your OB can prescribe, mine didn't but i was already high risk and he was avoiding any unnecessary meds.

Just make sure you talk to your OB ASAP as I've HEARD it takes a REALLY long time to go away if developed PP... (like A year 'really long"...) For your sake i hope thats just a bunch of MUD! If you need anything feel free to PM me!!!
