NBR: what a horrible day (T&Ps needed)

I'm not allowed to talk to anyone I know about this yet, so you ladies are the benefit of my no good, horrible, very bad day!

My mom called me today and told me that my dad lost his job on Thursday. He's an Athletic Director and this was a relatively new job. He started in September and was let go b/c of political bullshit. I'm so angry about this. He LOVED this job and they LOVED him, but he was hired by the superintendent who was just fired and he didn't have tenure so they made up crap about him and let him go. He is 2 years away from retirement; although has to work for about 10 years. He was good at his job, he fixed the problems they wanted him to fix, but because he was 'her guy' they let him go.

The best part about this whole story is that my parents have 4 kids in college. They only contribute to 2 of those tuitions, but they are still supporting all of my brothers and sisters. My mom will have to work FT now to get benefits (she's a lactation consultant at a local hospital). My poor dad; he's devastated, shocked, and hurt. This came out of the blue. So, can I ask for T&Ps for him that they are financially ok (my mom says they will be) and that he can get a new job quickly.

Then, I learned that a former colleague of mine (at my previous job) lost her 32 year old son today. I don't know what happened, but my heart is breaking for her.

My emotional pregnant self can't handle all this today. I have been on the verge of tears since my mom called at 1:30 today to break the news to me.

Oh god. I will keep your family and your friend in T&P's. I'm so sorry your day has been so awful. I wish we could help more than just offering our online support. But just to be clear, you have all of our support for what is clearly a difficult time.

Thanks everyone! I'll take online support over nothing right now. He doesn't want to tell many people, unless necessary, about his job because it will get around so I'm not allowed to talk to anyone about it right now and DH is sick of me saying the same thing: I can't believe it, he loved it there, they loved him, etc.

Tons of thoughts and prayers being sent your way. I have been in a similar position (worrying about my family's financial stability) and I remember how stressful it was. There WILL be a turning point in this, just take deep breaths and attempt to stay calm.

Unfortunately, there is nothing he can do because he isn't tenured. He spoke to the union lawyers and they said that this is allowed to happen and apparently our area is where it happens the most.

I had vivid dreams about my parents all night....them hiding cars at my grandma's so they are not repossessed, not being able to pay bills, my siblings not being able to finish college, etc. Being KU is making this worse.

Thanks so much for all your support ladies! I'm so glad I have a place that I can come to and say this stuff to get it out.

T&P to you and your family. Just an FYI as someone who paid for college on her own, there are so many financial aid services for your siblings. I got scholarships for being a woman majoring in science, being Latina (only a quarter Latina, but it still counts for scholarships), getting good grades in college, teaching the chem labs, etc. It sounds like your family has it together, so I know all will turn out alright.

Thanks! I'm sure they'll be ok. My brother is a sophomore right now in college and has 4 yrs left as he's going for PT. My sister only has a semester left. The other 2 luckily has some other financial support. My oldest brother has his education paid for by the gov't since he was in the military and my youngest sister is in grad school and is working at the school so most of that is paid for. She will need some help with housing and other living expenses since the school doesn't give her much per month.

The 2 have to call on Monday and see what financial aid can do for them since all their paperwork has been turned in. I'm sure it will be ok, just tight.

We are also, 100% Irish Catholic, so I remember not being able to get many scholarships when I was in school for that reason.

Sorry to hear about your tough day

My dad was let go from his job last year and is in his early 60s. Finding something new wasn't easy but he managed to get something before his severance ran out. It's hard at that age but not impossible.
