Crappy Fert Report update

Out of the 23 that the retrieved yesterday only 9 are mature and only 3 fertilized. 3. How in the hell did it come down to three?? I am beyond upset. In tears actually. I don't even know what to think. Why does this keep happening? I just don't understand. Now I'm panicking that we will have to do a 3dt which isn't what I want because I fear the results aren't as good. Or even worse they don't grow at all. Sorry to be a Debbie downer today. Any thoughts ladies?

@IFinTN‌ yes they did Icsi which is why I'm so confused on how out of the 9 only 3 fertilized. Does that even make sense?

Oh, no, no, no! That is so disappointing. I'm so sorry and I was so hopeful for you. I switched to PICSI, which is supposed to give even better results than ICSI, and only had 3/6 mature fertilize this last time (1st with ICSI 4/7 fertilized, 2nd with PICSI 3/3 fertilized). I asked if they could tell if the problem was with my eggs or the sperm, but they said they couldn't tell. Maybe ask about PICSI? I will pray that your embryos do great.

@Carol77B‌ I'm calling the doctor come Monday if they don't push me for a 3dt that day. I'm tired of hearing "these things happen" that's his favorite line. I want some answers. I'm tired if being pumped full of meds to grow bigger follicles which in turn don't give me better results. Thanks for the prayers. I'll take them all.

Ugh, I'm so sorry to hear that. At least you know that you stimmed as long as anyone could possibly stand... You may not have had those good ones otherwise. ((Hugs))

@scooteriste‌ I know it. But I want to talk to the doc about all of this because the first time I stimmed a normal cycle and only had 3 too. So does it make sense to keep going and going on these meds? Idk. Just all frustrating.

It's counterintuitive, but ICSI actually has lower successful fert rates than "natural" fertilization with healthy, normal sperm. Of course, if you're doing ICSI, it's because "natural" fertilization won't work.

@airidh80‌ the reason we are doing Icsi is because my husband had a failed vasovasostomy done and Icsi is our only choice. And from what the re kept telling us is that we have a much better chance with the Icsi. I guess not though

It sounds like you definitely need ICSI. ICSI drastically improves the odds for people with MFI - in fact, it's the ONLY decision for some people. However, ICSI doesn't *guarantee* fertilization. It absolutely sounds like your doctor made the right decision. If, say, your only problem was blocked fallopian tubes, and you had a stellar SA, ICSI would not make sense. Sorry if I wasn't clear

@airidh80‌ Thank you. It's just all so frustrating because it seems like I never get a straight real answer. The thought is always more meds for longer and I'm not sure if that's even worth it. I'm just praying that I can make it to a 5dt. Question, if I have two doing really well by day 5 and I want to transfer both but the doctor doesn't. Are there rules about that? I wish I would have transferred both last time because it didn't make it to freeze.

There aren't "rules" per se, but there are guidelines. They probably only transferred one last time because you're young. Studies are showing that if you have healthy blasts on Day 5, transferring two doesn't significantly improve the odds of a successful pregnancy, but it does drastically increase the odds of multiples. However, now that you've had a failed cycle, it would be reasonable to discuss transferring 2.

I'm sorry you got such crappy news! I don't have words of wisdom. We started out with low numbers, but out of our 4 fertilized, we got 2 blastocysts. So FX you get something good out of your trio!

((Hugs)) I can totally relate to your frustration! Our scenario was similar, ended up with 2 blasts and a morula day 5 transfer. I wish I had advice, but just know that you're not alone!!! RE said my numbers were great to start...he thinks it's an egg quality problem.

@Sigh202‌ first time i had 3 and they did a 3dt. Second time I had 4 and they did a 5dt. So I'm not sure. I guess it depends on what grade they are. Ugh. I am trying hard not to stress

I am SO SORRY that you are in fert report hell. It is agonizing, I know (we've never had good embryo quality for all three IVFs we did, and none of our embryos made it past the 1-2 cell stage for IVF #2). I just wanted to offer my thoughts and prayers.

I'm also going to flag down @jaytee16 for you because her story is similar and inspiring. In a nutshell, she went into her ER expecting 11-15 eggs, got 7, only 3 fertilized..... it was very stressful for those few days waiting for the next report and then beta, but as it turns out she transferred two and got a BFP (she's awaiting her u/s now to see how many stuck!). AND the third embryo made it to blastocyst and was frozen. I hope and pray your story goes the same way, and I just wanted to share with you because maybe it will be comforting to know that your three could be good quality... unfortunately there's no way to know until the next report comes in. I can totally relate to you! 21 eggs retrieved, 15 mature, 13 fertilized-6 w/ ICSI 7 w/IVF. Sounds great, right?

I was scheduled for a day 5 transfer since they had confined to grow on day 3. However, by day four almost all arrested and they transferred a very early blast and a morula. We had none to freeze. I was devastated and already started planning a second round of IVF... And I got my bfp. I am 9 weeks with one bean.

Please stay positive. I know how hard it is, but we had 1 and 1 stuck! I am proof it happens! Fingers crossed for you!

Thanks for sharing your story also. It def is giving me more hope that it can still work. Its so hard to not just became a debbie downer and negative. Hearing these success stories is truly helping. I'm just praying for a good report tomorrow and that I can hold out until Wednesday for a 5dt.

I know you were expecting much better news with such a high number retrieved. This is all so tough and the "it only takes one" mentality doesn't come until after you've had success from a difficult cycle. I hope that this cycle--though full of uncertainty--is a lucky one. ***Update*** only 2 grew overnight. I have one at 2 cells and one at 3 cells. I'm really devastated now. My 3dt is planned for tomorrow at noon.

@weeklyplanner‌ Thank you. Right now I feel like a science experiment gone wrong. I feel like they are just shooting me up with meds and saying well let's see if this works. This is my third cycle and I'm really loosing trust in my Re. I have a shared risk program with them so not sure how I would go about moving to another one. It's all frustrating.
