6/13 breast feeding/pumping check in

Re: 6/13 breast feeding/pumping check in

  • Should also add... that's the routine on a good day :) on a growth spurt/we're going nuts day it is usually just nurse all day, formula all night.

  • Loading the player...
  • Has anyone here gotten mastitis? My right nipple has been KILLING me and then the actual boob started hurting too. I didn't feed her on that side yesterday because it hurt too much, and I went and picked up my pump from the pharmacy (a 45 minute drive each way) and then it got engorged and hurt soooooo bad. I stopped at my parents house on the way home and pumped and then was able to feed her on that side again. It still hurt but not as bad. So then last night, I had a fever of 100.4 and chills and was shaky and just felt like crap. I went to see the LC today and she said it's mastitis, and we caught it early. So she sent me to the OB and they put me on antibiotics and told me to take tea bags and wrap them in wash cloths to make like packets and put them on each boob and it should help. And keep nursing her and it should get better.
  • @katburdette- My daughter was also tongue tied. We got hers snipped last Friday and she's been nursing MUCH better ever since. It took her a few sessions to learn how to use her tongue and suck instead of doing a biting motion that she'd previously been doing.
It makes me so excited to nurse and feel a difference. The LC warned me it may take a few tried to get the sucking motion down. Was your daughter in pain after?
She let out one terrible scream when the doctor snipped then cried/whined for about 5 minutes. After that, she didn't seem to notice.
  • Decided not to be a slave to the pump today and left the house for about 6 hours. Tried nursing while out but LO was very fussy. It was wonderful to be out!!! But was disappointed that Parker wouldn't nurse! He has been doing great at home, so not sure what the problem is. Hopefully my newly upped supply doesn't go down because I went so long without pumping, but the freedom was great. Is it possible to keep supply up by pumping for longer, but less frequently? Example: instead of pumping for 15 min every 2 hrs, pump for 30 min every 4 hrs?

  • How long does the 3 week growth spurt last? I've been feeding my LO every hour. She was going 3 hours in between feedings. I feel bad for my 2 older kids since it's summer and they want to enjoy it and it's hard for me to do anything.

You might want to check out power pumping. I haven't tried it but it was recommended.

  • @katburdette - That's great!
  • @katekat8721 - i think ours are about the same age (born May 20).  I am impressed.  I am so anxious about pumping bc they inevitably have to eat right after.  They are not consistent and might need to eat every hour, so I am worried I wont have enough for their next feeding.  Also because it takes so long to feed them.  I am rarely pumping because of this.  Also, they don't always both settle down for me to pump right after, so an hour to an hour and a half later, they are finally settling down.  How long are yours going between feeding?  I am just now getting a few 3 hour stents here and there.  So, when you say you are pumping every 90 minutes, is that determined by just the clock, or when they feed?  BF has been so hard and yes, I see why people give up, but I am nothing if not stubborn, so I will keep trying since I know they will not always eat this much.  There is such a small window between BF, changing diapers, settling down and the next feeding!  Good job lady.  Sounds like you have a good plan.  Would love some advice!

  • I breastfeed LO every 3 hours. I also pump 2-3x a day. Usually it's 2x a day. Mostly 9am after I feed LO. I usually get 2 oz approx after he's eaten. Then at 9pm at night, DH feeds him a bottle and I solely pump. I usually get about 4-5oz then. I obviously freeze/store the pumped milk unless we are gonna be out, then he gets a bottle. He gets a bottle every night at 9pm. DH likes to feed him too.

I want to switch to exclusively pumping, as I'm going to have to for work, but don't know how. I don't want to have my supply drop. Do I just pump on the same feeding schedule as I was feeding LO? TIA!

  • How do I know when to switch sides? LO is usually full on one side and even after 40 minutes I still have milk.

  • @LoveOBX630‌ yes, just pump when you would normally feed to start. I ended up cutting out the middle of the night pump shortly thereafter, but I had oversupply so it just made my first morning pump huge. I ended up pumping right when I woke up, three times at work, and right before I went to bed.

    Married DH 7/30/11

    CSC arrived 5/7/12

    CHC arrived 6/2/14

  • I want to pump around 5 weeks when/before MIL comes so H and I can make 2 commitments out of the house and leave LO with her.

I would also like LO to have an occasional bottle from H at some point as I am (at 9 days) already exhausted being the only one able to feed her.

Is all of this ok? I want a small stash, I don't need a bigger stash until I return to work after 13 weeks.

burp and offer the 2nd side when they pull off of side #1,

but if they don't want side 2, that's ok.

If you have a super sleepy newborn, of course, you nag nag nag to get baby to nurse longer and take both sides,

but most babies do best on feeding on only one side.

We are mammals.  no other mammals switch sides at all.

My pediatrician also suggested only feeding on one side at a time too. I use a phone app to track the side and how long because I find the tracking comforting. (Feed Pro app on Android and iPhone) tracks diapers and sleep and formula too.

  • Four weeks of nursing and pumping and I'm really starting to have a hard time with how I feel about all of it. I keep saying one day at a time. Baby is nursing better but the overall breast discomfort I feel all of the time is really wearing on me. The burning feeling of the nipples post feeding, super sensitive nipples & sore chest even when not engorged sometimes makes me want to throw in the towel. Nursing bras don't give me enough support, underwire is uncomfortable and the few sports bras that I can stand are not practical for nursing.
One day at a time right? After 4 weeks I should be in the home stretch for things getting better but I feel like I need to be talked off the ledge. I'm feeling better from the c-section and other discomforts but the boobs- those I feel like will bother me forever.

  • @otter1103‌ I got the Bravado Body Silk Seamless Nursing Bra from Amazon and it's the first time I've been comfortable and supported. I splurged and got a 2nd because 1 for who knows how many months of this is not enough.

In looser or sleeping bras during the day I wear the medela nipple shells. (Also Amazon) and they collect leaks, allow nips to air dry with breast milk on them as well as keeps cream on them. They have really helped.

  • @AmyG*‌ I did get antibiotics and the nips are pink. I checked some other thrush signs and symptoms and will be calling the Dr first thing in the morning. Hopefully there's relief on the horizon.

@otter1103‌ I feel you sista! My nips almost constantly hurt, but they are definitely damaged. I feel like her latch is better but they're never going to heal bc of the constant use :( I might go pick up some shields tomorrow. The soothies felt great but didn't heal them. I feel like I've tried so many different things and still no healing.

    @anations

with twins I'd do a couple weighted feedings with an LC amd evaluate how they are doing getting milk, weight gain and if they need supplement and how much.  Cause trying to take care of twins AND Pump is really hard, so don't do it unless you have to. ;)

How's diaper counts and weight gain?  If they are fine, that's a good indication that whatever you are doing is working, right?

@amyg* - They are gaining and diapers good.  I am just all over the place.  There is little in the way of schedule or consistency.  A lot of times they are eating on and off for 1-2 hours.  I just can't get a grip on if they are getting enough from my breast, when I should supplement and when the heck do I pump if they feed so often.  still so frustrated and totally understand mommas who give up.

Yup, yours are a week ahead of mine! Dude, it's hard. Yesterday they were either on the boob or bottle all day, and were fussing the entire time they didn't have something in their mouths! I was running on 2 hours of sleep and going crazy!

Is your hubby home to help? Mine is still home for the next week and I think that's what is also helping greatly. When I'm done BFing, he'll change them, etc so I can pump. When I'm pumping, he is giving them a bottle to help top them off. I'm dreading when he goes back to work, but thankful it's only part time.

I just downloaded Baby Connect app to try to see what sort of patterns we're having as far as feeding/sleeping and stuff. I'd really like to get on some sort of schedule but I don't know if that's in the cards for the future. Right now we're really just taking it day by day!

They usually nurse every 2-3 hours or so, so when I pump I just do it every 90 mins by an alarm I have on my phone. If they are hungry and I've just pumped then we'll give them a bottle of BM and then I'll let them nurse themselves to sleep after they finish the bottle.

I don't know if this makes sense. Most days it doesn't make sense to us either haha. We're just trying to keep our heads above the water!

I think you're doing a great job! It sounds like the babies are getting enough from primarily nursing, which is my ultimate goal because I hate supplementing. Pumping will be in my forseeable future because I am going back to work in a couple months. But I'd love to kick the formula at least! Hang in there mama, you're doing a great job :)

Twin moms @CAMag @anations @CJnKR2014 are you guys tandem nursing? I have the My Brest Friend twin pillow and usually tandem twice a day at least (morning and before bed). I just came across this video with how to make it a bit easier. I'm going to try it out today!

yes this sounds fine, start pumping once a day usually first thing in the am on one side, and baby primarily eats on the other side cause your supply is usually highest in the morning first feed. wait til after the 3 week growth spurt settles down so you don't drive yourself nuts trying to start pumping during a growth spurt.  intro the bottle and pump when you give the bottle.

You may be the only one who can feed, but dh can certainly do a majority of the feeding of you(so then he's feeding baby too!), changing diapers, rocking, holding, changing diapers, grocery shopping, dishes, laundry, housecleaning, etc.  so you can concentrate on healing your own body and feeding baby.  Don't let him off easy just cause you are the only one that feeds baby.

@AmyG*‌ so, I should wait until week four to pump or start now and just skip week 3?

  • @katekat8721 - I am tandom feeding as much as possible.  I am batling them falling asleep and feedings take like 45 minutes to an hour sometimes due to this.  Then I put them down and they start acting hungry again!  Giving me no time to pump, I don't know wether to offer the breast or bottle at that time.  I am just in despair and crying a lot because I just cant get it.  I am so sad...

  • @AmyG*‌ we have been keeping up with everything and their diapers and weight are fine. So if I don't supplement, I just keep putting them on the breast over and over? Sometimes they don't seem to get satisfied with me. Or they do seem like it then need more soon after. I random as much as I can. Almost every feeding. I only do bottle if they just won't quit acting hungry after breast feeding.

  • Thrush was/is the verdict. So LO has a nice purple mouth and I have awesome purple nipples for a few days. We were both "painted" with Nystatin this morning. The Doc didn't say anything about not pumping so I'm going to think the purple tinged BM I'm pumping right now is safe for LO since it would discolor while nursing anyway. Insight from the gallery?

  • I was having issues with one nipple cracking and bleeding. I had tried everything and nothing was working. I decided to go the old school route and I bought a product called Bag Balm. It is in a green tin can and has udders on the front. I found mine at Walmart but if yours doesn't carry it you can find it at feed supply stores or Amazon. It s egst ranchers use on cow udders when they get cracked. I only pumped on that side and applied it after every pumping session. My nipple was healed in a day and a half.

If you were painted purple that sounds like Genetian violet, which is available over the counter.  Nystatin oral suspension is usually kinda yellow/clear.  So first, clarify exactly what you received at dr.

If it's genetian violet or nystatin, both are safe if they get into milk.

However, if you have thrush, pumped milk should be used asap, rather than stored, cause it can re-infect if given to baby later on.

    *********quote fail*****
Paperwork from our visit says Nystatin (even though it's purple). I have a stash of pumped milk. Now I'm wondering if I shouldn't dump the last 2 days (when symptoms started) of it due to the risk of re-infection.

@katekat8721‌ -- awesome video! Can't wait to try it! Seriously, the visual tutorial just energized the heck out of me. She had some good tips. I was VERY UNSUCCESSFULLY trying to latch one and add the other and would frustrate the hell out of all of us. Ahhhhh! Will try to report back tonight. Thank you!

Same here! I'd latch one and then lose her as soon as I tried reaching for her sis. Then I'd have two frustrated babies! I started using the boppies today too and moving the babies onto them after and it worked well this morning! Gonna keep at it.

    Sigh. It's exhausting though isn't it?! :)

  • I have a question about breast shields. I have the 24mm shields right now, but I'm not sure if they are the right size. My nip fits into the hole, but my breast tissue is really squished and spills out around where it sections on. I'm not sure if this is too small because of the tissue or an okay size since the nip fits. Any ideas?

@AmyG*‌ I have a question about thrush. I'm suspecting that we may have it, but I haven't taken any antibiotics. My nipples hurt during latch on, and usually between feedings. I also have a pretty large crack on both. It is painful anytime I bump my nipples through my shirt and when she's nursing on my left side I feel this deep pulling sensation/pain that goes all the way around to my back. My LO is a month old now. I feel like I shouldn't still be this sore and dealing with these cracks. Are there any home remedies or do I need to get to the doc?

Thrush usually burns like glass going out thru the nipples at the beginning of a feeding.  It could be thrush.  It could also still be a bad latch.  when's last time you saw an IBCLC lactation consultant.

Try a diluted vinegar rinse of nips several times a day and see if it makes them feel better or worse.  are they itchy, flakey, extra pink and kind of shiny skin?

Okay, then I have none of those symptoms. It's basically a deep pain in the breast between feedings and the pulling sensation during... And the nipple pain of course. Last time I worked with the LC was at her 2 week appt. I'll call Monday and try to get in

  • @AmyG she is 11 days as of 30 minutes ago, so maybe?

Dad did the diaper then all the burping and holding of the paci in her mouth but eventually neither of us could take it anymore so I just had him give her back to me. Her every two hours turned to every 45 minutes or less early evening on, but I thought the 58 minute feed would surely slow her down, wrong!

  • Ok here's one for the board since I'm up dealing with it now. LO breast feeds, I thoroughly burp her then I lay her down to nap. 20mins-1hr later she's making noises -little gasp/hiccup type noises like she has fluid caught in her throat. When I pick her up she has a bewildered look to her and I burp her some more..she usually has one and a few minutes after sitting upright and patting the noises go away...anyone else experience this? What's going on?
