Level II u/s at Peri at 20-24 wks?

I referred myself to the Peri due to my lost twin.  OB said it wasn't necessary, but I wanted to go for peace of mind (ha ha).  At my last OB appt he said that they would do a structural u/s at their office at 18 wks and if everything looked okay, then I could just decline on going back to the Peri at 20 wks.

At my last Peri appt (16 wks) they didn't see anything wrong, but they wanted me to come back b/t 20 and 24 wks to get the rest of the "heart details" that they weren't able to get due to the fact that I was only 16 wks and the fetal position.  I told the Peri that I had a big u/s scheduled at 18 wks, and she said that the u/s there wouldn't be able to see these "heart details" if it wasn't level II.

Does anyone know what these heart details would be?  I asked, and they said it wasn't the four chambers of the heart they were looking for, they saw that.  I would've asked the Peri myself, but she was rushing us out of there.

I'm trying to decide whether I should cancel my 20 wk u/s with the Peri, only of course if all is well at the big u/s at the OB.  Honestly, I'm not impressed with the Peri and I really don't like the one I saw last time.  And it's a long drive there (1.5 hrs) and everytime it's been an hour wait in the waiting room.

  • I saw a peri for the same reasons, and after my level II with him at 18 weeks, he told me I could come back if I wanted, but since he didn't see any reason that I needed to, I declined.  It actually feels nice to just be at the OB with all the regular gals!

  • I can't figure out if they just want me to come back for a real reason or just for more business.  Most people don't have a level II u/s at 20 wks and all is well.  I never had one with my son.  My OB says I'm not at higher risk than the average person, but then why does the Peri act like it's important to have a level II at 20 wks when I referred myself there for the lost twin issue which according to the Peri last time, isn't really an issue???

  • I saw a per at 17 weeks and while everything looked fine, they wanted me back at 20 weeks to look at the heart in more detail.  It's totally normal.  I guess it's just hard to see the heart very well before 20 weeks.
  • I also have an appt at 20 weeks to have a level II u/s with the peri. I have only been there once and it was for my NT scan at 13 weeks. They called it an anatomy scan and I think it is pretty common. When is your appt? Mine is Jan. 22nd.

    Melissa :)?

  • Mine is Jan 21st.
