My friend was horrified that I let my sister's dog lick LO's face. We didn't let him lick him when he was tiny, but when he started moving around, we couldn't stop it unless we followed him around every second to stop it. My friend wouldn't let a dog go near her kid. On the other hand, she thought I was silly for buying my LO organic puffs and pouches and said she would never have spent extra money for organic when regular food is just fine. Point being, everyone is different. Parents are concerned about different issues and fine with others. If someone is concerned about lisps and wants to use straw cups instead, then go for it!
@CL8badB I don't outright dismiss something but like the secondary drowning thing - it was one kid in 2008 and he had symptoms. Kids aren't dying left and right, hours after they leave every body of water, you know? Mindful of the risk isn't the same as blowing up FB with OMG! (this isn't directed at you lol). Someone is always going to suffer an ill effect from everything. You have to measure the risk. If a small handful of kids are getting lisps and they aren't telling me whether this kid basically lived with it in his mouth or not, I'm going to assume it's likely not a large risk. People die from Tylenol but I still take it because the risk, while there, is not common.
In Denmark women leave their babies outside, alone, in strollers while they shop or have coffee..... gasp.
Do they abduct babies there as much as they do here?
(Seriously asking)
Not that I'm advocating for leaving kids alone outside but DO people abduct babies often here? Genuine question. I actually think it's one of those things that's so horrific it seems more prevalent than it really is.
@Cl8badB Holy shit - you would die on FB, seriously. Or, more accurately, you would be convinced your child was about to die. That friggin dry drowning thing has shown up at least once a day for the past 2 weeks. It's the panic level that bothers me. It's like "This kid went in a pool and went to bed and almost died! Don't swim and sleep ZOMG!" Ok fine, if your kid inhales water and then shits his pants and is listless (literally what happened to that poor kid), you'd know. Don't act like kids can die and you'd never have any idea. He did not die, by the way.

CL8: Good point. I just feel like i see it on the news almost every day. Like anything else im sure it happens a lot less than it seems bc of the media.
Also, the majority of kidnappings are by family members or someone related. That's still scary and sad but isn't quite what we picture when we think of abductions.
Not that I'd let my kids play outside alone but I'd be far less concerned leaving my immobile kid in my driveway while I ran in to get something than my 4 year old because I'm quite sure he'd dart in front of a car.
I just had this discussion with my husband. I've only heard Dr. Oz here and there on my morning radio show (Elvis Duran), but have never seen the show. My husband thinks of Dr. Oz like Dr. Phil. I said, I think based on the impressive credentials, Dr. Oz may know what he is talking about even thought I am not sure. He thinks he's nothing more than a tv personality. who's right?
I was lurking on another board last year and people were actually afraid that birds would carry away their babies. I know there is the crazy story of eagles grabbing an occasional dog, but where do you live that there are that many full sized eagles and really? With all that happens on a daily basis you have time to worry about birds?
Backstory- dad let the baby nap in a pnp on the covered patio while watching him from the kitchen and feeding the older kid.

This reminds me; at the birthday party, my friend (a 4th grade teacher) was talking about her students being concerned about getting shot at school after the recent string of school/ public place mass shootings in the media. We were commenting on how scary and how frequent it seems. My in laws jumped in and said that statistically, there isn't a huge increase in this type of gun violence but it seems like it happens more often because of the media. My MIL even said that in her little town in upstate NY, when she was growing up, there were 3 similar mass shooting instances, 1 of them at her school, killing a brother of her friend and 3-4 others at school. She said it made the local news but it never made the national news. I wasn't going to touch that conversation with a 10 foot pole at that time, but I did wonder if it is true about the statistics.
@Monkeybutt80 dr. Oz just got grilled by the senate for peddling crap
I heard bits of it but not the entire thing. I guess his position was that he endorsed the ingredient but didn't endorse a specific product because he didn't want to seem as he was peddling crap, but then all these companies started making diet pills with the ingredient (poor quality) claiming that Dr. Oz said this works. But no idea if that is really what happened.
I do agree with the senate that as a "Dr" he needs to stop using"sales" type of exaggerated language on his show.
Just googling something isn't an appropriate way to do "research". If you're going to decide how to raise your kid based on research, webMD is not the answer.
Also - Wikipedia. No to wiki.
What about about.com??
Hah.. Just kidding! I think it's hard to know what's reputable and what's not these days as far as online research. There is SO much out there... some sites are obviously crap, while others appear to be more credible, but who the heck knows! You kind of have to do your best to some extent.
If it is .edu or .org, it is generally reputable. Anything .com can pretty much be dismissed. This is based on the standards that the nursing school I work for holds.
@NurseMommy13 This college has that as well, but some of the assignments require them to use the CDC website or the ANA website. They could use a website with nursing ethics that may or may not be credible, but ANA is definitely credible. What college do you go to, if you don't mind me asking? This school provides a whole bunch of database options and I even know some that they don't provide. Part of my job.
Speaking of Dr. Phil... I have never watched his show, but sometimes watch what comes on after it. It makes me super stabby that his wife is always sitting there waiting to walk off the set holding his hand. It just makes her seem like a lap dog. I want to shake her shoulders and tell her to get a life!
Not an opinion per say, because I don't care either way, but can someone explain to me the ear piercing infant girls? I just feel under-educated on the subject. ---
Gah! I cant get out of the quote box.
My ears were pierced when I was around 3 months and my DD's were pierced at 2 months, just after her first shots. I did them then because its easier, I don't know if that's the right word for it, but when they're older they're more prone to getting them infected by touching and playing with them, the younger you do it they don't even notice they're there. I know lots of people who wish their parents did it when they were small so they wouldn't be scared later to do it, at 7 or 10 or whenever. I personally liked not having to make the decision even though I probably would've anyway.

I think part of the problem is that the human species pretty much sucks at risk assessment. We either think that something is an imminent risk or it happens to other people. Which is why people freak out and go overboard on things like child abduction but 18% of the population still smokes or nearly a quarter believe that climate change in nonexistent. We don't do well with the nebulous nuances. You're so right. The same people posting the drowning thing are the same people who I passive aggressively target with my posts about car seat safety lol
My UO is that I don't feel even a little bit bad for Kim Kardashian. She's a reality whore. I do feel awful for the celebrities who try to stay out of the spotlight and just can't get away from the paparazzi.
Me neither. She wouldn't have a "career" if people stopped talking about her.
I know we have moved on but I disagree with @Dencasa. I think that the pain and knowledge of what you're really doing to your body is exactly why parents should wait to get their Littles' ears pierced. You're punching a hole in your head, you should knowingly go into that. If they don't remember the pain and upkeep of a piercing what's to keep them from trying to pierce their friend's ears in their room when they are 5?
First it's an ear attached to your head, not your head. Soft cartilage and all.
Second since she had them done at such a young age how would she know the first thing about what goes into piercing. For all she knows that's how she came.
She's almost 4 now and we haven't had any issue with her asking why she has them and so and so doesn't. She knows to be careful cause of her earrings when taking shirts off, and will remind others to be careful as well.
If she gets older hates them I can always take them out and let the holes close.
