If she is going through a growth spurt or didn't get enough high fat milk during the last feeding, she may actually be hungry. Can you hear her swallowing? How are you measuring time between nursing sessions?

I can definitely hear her swallow during each feeding and can hear her taking gulps of milk. She usually screams (desperately) if she is hungry and usually gets hungry every 2 to 3 hours. If she just wants boobs, i can usually calm her down with a pacifier. But tHe LC said not to give her a pacifier so i dont know what to do.

Also, latch is ok and nipples still raw, forming blisters, etc. Seems like everyone is saying it gets better because I will get used to it. I ordered nipple shells and nipple shields. Feels too early (6 days) to pump. Anyone know HOW this actually gets better?

  • So was all excited that we went through 24 hours without having to raid the freezer stash. My supply went up! AND now his appetite has gone up...from 2-3 oz every 2 hrs to 4 oz every 2 hrs, with an occasional snack in between. So even though my supply went up, I'm short again. So trying this formula tonight to supplement. Anyone ever use it? Like, dislike, or formula suggestions?

It could be just because it's ready made but this kind made DS spit up far more than normal. He does better with powdered formula. I already had DH buy Similac Advance so that's what we are using to supplement.

    @BMaidPlanner‌
My LC recommended either reclined fb or the Australian hold when DD seems to be choking and/or clamping down to decrease the flow. I know things got rough for me at about a week and then again at 2.5 weeks. Have you tried Soothies yet? They make a world of difference for me when my nipples hurt. I wore them all the time at first, but I now I only need them occasionally. Totally worth the money!!

Yeah some started calling the laid back nursing the australian hold, cause mom is "down under" lol!

It is a common hold recommended with young babies, esp if they have shallow latches.  gravity tends to push their head into the breast and they get a deeper latch that way.  although if you are well endowed you might have to figure out how to keep the boobahs from heading in the wrong direction, mine always head to my armpits when I lay on my flat, so you may want only slightly reclined not completely flat on your back.

@AmyG*‌ I have that large breast issue and also, she is SO small, will I just need to support her head and make sure her nose is not squished into my boob? I don't know why I feel like I won't be able to make this work.

  • Question... Does anyone have the issue where you know your LO isnt hungry but she/he just wants boob? My LO always open her mouth and search for my nipple. I know she isnt hungry because i just fed her an hour ago. If that happens, do you just let her suck on it, give her a pacifier, or just let her cry?

I let them use me as a human pacifier. I figure it helps me make more milk anyways and it calms them down.

But like KrystaJ said, they could also be going through a growth spurt and just be super hungry!

We use the blue Similac Advanced. It's total milk based. When we tried the green supplementing kind there it made his poor tummy hurt and gave him an awful diaper rash I guess because it is milk and soy based. The blue was what our hospital used and gave us.

It's the best thing ever! It's a gel breast pad that cools and heals cracked nipples. I am so happy my friend recommended them. I've noticed a significant improvement in my pain in 24 hours

So in the hospital they had me doing 10 minutes on each breast. At what point do I move to just one breast at a time? I know there is an importance to being able to get all the milk and hindmilk...

Eta: breast not beast... Although they are beasts.

I would assume once your milk comes in you are good to go. The ten minutes each side is generally to get all the colustrum and to encourage the milk to come in.

LO is spitting up a good bit. After she ate earlier she was laying there so content and then it came pouring out of her mouth. Scared me so bad because it looked like an entire feeding. She didn't burp very good. She spits up a good bit. Reflux maybe?

Mine does this every time she eats. I'll be watching for answers to this.

4 oz is a heck of a LOT for young baby.  Babies need about 25 oz a day (range is 19-30 oz) so at 5 oz they only need to eat about 6 times a day, and for under a month old babies they really should be eating about 8-10 times a day.

Are you sure baby isn't eating too fast? Bottle should take about 20 minutes so brain has time to know stomach is full.

Exclusively pumping, but my LO is also eating 4 oz each feeding; she'll be 3 weeks tomorrow.  I had her at 2.5 oz. each feeding (anywhere from 2.5 - 4 hours) last week and she wasn't satisfied.  I upped it to 3 and still not satisfied. I tried giving her the paci to see if she just wanted to suck. Nope; just spits it out when she's hungry.
What is the difference between BFing a baby on demand and feeding them a known amount of breastmilk each feeding out of a bottle?  If I was BFing, she'd still want the full 4 ounces/be full, whether it's in one sitting or feeding on demand, right?

    WSS
I thought he was eating too much too, so would give him a pacifier after 3 oz, but little chunky butt was not having it. He takes his time and gets burped in the middle of feedings, so I don't think it's an issue of eating too fast.

  • New mommy here with a 5 day old. I need to be talked off a ledge!! I've been trying to EBF..baby girl ate like a champ at the hospital and seems like she does ok at most feedings but always seems hungry afterwards -she cries and sticks her hands in her mouth. The past few feedings she tries for a minute or two and then gets frustrated and pushes me away and starts to get hysterical flailing arms and legs, hands in mouth and screaming for an hour at a time. She will not go back to the boob- Ive tried multiple positions, switching sides, burping to get rid of any gas - tonight I even tried pumping (only got 1/4oz) so I really believe I'm shorting her and the crying is breaking my heart. I supplemented with a 2oz sample of premixed formula that I had and she inhaled it like it was a mirage in the Sahara... I think I'm gonna hit up my hospitals BF support group tomorrow I really don't want to give up...but could use some encouragement! We have lots of pee diapers but haven't had a poopy diaper since Sat. Pediatrician wasn't too concerned but all of this makes me feel inadequate and like a bad mommy...help!

  • @AmyG*‌ How do i make it a little harder for the baby to drink from the bottle? My LO is 2 weeks old and we generally bottle feed her at night so we make sure she drinks enough and can sleep a bit longer. She generally finishes the 3oz within 10 minutes and i know it's too fast... I dont want to tilt the bottle horizontally too much because she will end up gulping too much air.
  • fsumomfsumom member
    @AmyG*‌

She said his latch is perfect. He doesn't appear to have tongue tie. It's really like his suck isn't strong enough. I will say I've noticed a difference on his feedings. I feel his suck is stronger at times and I hear more swallowing.
    ~Jessica~

  • Ladies who are pumping. I totally understand not liking the not knowing factor. Most NICU moms don't like not knowing. My LO took in a lot no matter waft we do. She was up to 4-5 oz.

Your doing good. Keep up what works for you. Go with what feels right.

Also a little AW time.... 24 hours with no bottle is fast approaching. She actually latched without the shield once last night. My first cluster feed experience. Sorry but i
  • @AmgG* - thanks!  Good grief though, I have to do this again in two weeks?!  And I was so excited that I might start getting sleep sometime soon...

@kaysa2‌ ME TOO tonight. She has been on and off my boobs with fussing in between if I put her down for hours now. Mama wants rest. She is also barely sucking/swallowing by now and falls asleep but if I put her down....

    Three things:

First, just tried side nursing. Not sure if I like it or not. I got a weird pulling sensation. I also get it anytime I nurse on the left side. It "pulls" the whole way around to my shoulder blade. What is that?

Second: does anyone else's LO try to rip their face off while nursing? She seems to be frustrated at times and scratches and pulls at her face. Any way to stop this? (I just restrain her hands with a blanket for now)

Third: this has bothered me for some time now.... I used to have B cup boobs before I was pregnant. Now they are D or DD if engorged. Will they ever go back to my B cup or am I destined for reduction surgery at some point?

  • Boobs do deflate after you wean. Sadly, they do not deflate to the same consistency or shape necessarily. My sister swears they come back eventually, but mine weren't my normal after 18 months post weaning when I got pregnant again. I went from a 32a to a 40dd with my first and while they shrank back, they were flat and I was permanently beaming. It was awesome, only not. This time around I didn't get quite as big, so we'll see what happens when I wean.

  • @AmyG*‌ I have a quick question. Akk of a sudden I'm getting a sharp shooting pain in my right breast when I nurse or if I get too full. I seem to remember a plugged duct being more of a dull ache, so I'm not sure what this is. Any ideas?

Not sure if my eyes are playing tricks on me but I did a weighed feeding and DS was 42 grams heavier after nursing for maybe 30 minutes. This is huge for us as yesterday morning he got like 12 grams in an hour!

did you try again and get the same results? I have fingers crossed but it makes typing very difficult.

Yes, same results a second time. Well, it was 38 grams. My only issue is that he weighed 7lbs5oz Monday and is 7lbs6.3oz today so I don't think his weight gain is sufficient.

So frustrated. DS nursed for an hour and got an ounce. Just when I think we've made progress. He's still 8oz from his birth weight and will be 3 weeks Sunday. I just don't have the time to nurse, pump, formula feed.

I've not been keeping up the last few days but is it possible he was mostly just comfort sucking that feed?  Intake will definitely vary from session to session so better to look at the overall picture vs. just one session.  Sorry you are still having struggles :(  Wish I could come hang out with you for a bit!
  • @katburdette- My daughter was also tongue tied. We got hers snipped last Friday and she's been nursing MUCH better ever since. It took her a few sessions to learn how to use her tongue and suck instead of doing a biting motion that she'd previously been doing.

    @ncbelle‌

He definitely was comfort sucking a lot. I have seen a difference the past couple of days. His latch seems better and I'm seeing/hearing swallowing more. With that being said, it's driving me crazy not knowing what he's getting when I nurse as I only do a weighed feeding in the morning now. Today I started giving him a half ounce of pumped milk in a bottle and then I nurse him. I don't pump after every feeding but try to every other feeding. It's all so time consuming.
    ~Jessica~

  • @anations here's very roughly what I do

    - pump before babies wake up, save in fridge
    - tandem nurse as soon as they wake up
    - pump 1.5-2 hours after last pumping session continually throughout the day, save in fridge for either topping off during the day or for nighttime
    - nurse on demand throughout the day and pump afterwards
    - pump one more time before bed, tandem nurse and pass off babies to hubby
    - wake up every 3 hrs to pump
    - hubby uses half formula/half BM to feed babies throughout the night

Basically tandem feed as much as possible, use pumped BM to top babies off when needed, pump throughout the day approximately every 90 mins, tandem feed before bed, give hubby formula/BM bottles to use at night. Sometimes it's just straight formula, depends how much I can pump!

    Yes. I'm a dairy cow.
