  • Just to clarify I only dislike one piece outfits on toddler boys, not baby boys. The little short rompers are a staple right now. Especially for hanging at home. But I won't put one on mason. Blech.

I don't even think they make 1 pieces over 24 months so I don't even think you could. Whats the problem putting your 16 month old in a t-shirt material 1 piece while he's running around. Guarantee they are a lot more comfortable than in a polo shirt and jean/khaki shorts

I am trying really hard to think of a polarizing topic right now. C'mon guise
    Okay, I'll try:

I think that we need to have a better system in all states of the US to force mentally ill people/addicts into a period of supervision and/or treatment. I think it's messed up that a person has to agree to treatment in order to receive it when they're obviously not okay. I'm not sure what this would look like, but I feel like there needs to be a thing. Simply letting a person off the hook because they state that they're not a threat to themselves or others isn't always the right thing to do if they are, actually, a threat to themselves or others.
  • Mason is tiny and only wears 18-24 month clothes, so I could. I don't know, it's just not my taste I guess, I would prefer to put them in gym or sweat shorts and Tshirts, which is what mason lived in all last summer unless we were going out somewhere.

That's what my 2 year old wears now. So it's more an age thing not a size thing. If my kiddo was super small for his age like Mason I probably wouldn't either since no one else his age is. But at 12-18ish months old they are definitely still babies and is not ridiculous to dress them as such

I'm not trying to start a fight either. It's terrible that events like you mentioned happen and it makes me sick. However, there are studies that show that stricter gun control laws would actually be counterproductive regarding murder and suicide rates. In fact, a Harvard Study found that as gun ownership increases, murder and suicide decreases. Nations with stringent anti-gun laws actually had the highest murder rates.
I'm not saying we need to do nothing. I think ideas like preventing the sale of guns between individuals without a background check or any record of the sale would be a good thing. But the statistics just don't back up the types of legislation most people are proposing when the gun control debate gets brought up.

So what, a psych test for every citizen???
Mental health care needs to be AVAILABLE, not required.
I just think it gets more complicated than that. I think that the most straightforward example to use is the homeless. Yes, they have a RIGHT to live under the bridge suffering from schizophrenia in urine-soaked clothes, but is that really just?

Also you have to be really careful with privacy settings. You can allow only friends to see your posts but what about comments left by friends. Those may be viewable by their friends so a "have fun on vacation" maybe viewable by people you don't know.
This type of thing on FB is pretty much why I hardly ever post there.  Once I was browsing my news feed, and saw a photo of someone's wedding that one of my friends commented on.  Despite the fact that I'm not friends with the actual bride/groom (don't even know them at all), I was able to click on the photo and see their whole wedding album.  Creeped me thefuck out, thinking that people can do the same thing to my photos/posts.

I'm not a fan of all the pink for breast cancer either but keep that to myself as a general rule, especially around survivors and their families. Some of them can get rather testy about it.

@ColeRose‌ so it's not just me that doesn't care for that word? I feel so androgynous talking about underwear, though. But I just hate the word panties. Not sure why.

Really? Most of the survivors I know can't stand all the pink everything either. Especially since in most cases it doesn't actually raise awareness and companies have started using it as a marketing gimmick from which little to no proceeds actually go towards cancer research.

If you go to Harvard's website, they say that is not what their study showed. In comparable but different areas in the US and in every country comparable to the US, more guns = more crime.

How do they explain the murder rates in cities like D.C., which has some of the strictest laws in the country?

ETA: There definitely needs to be a mental health reform, but you can't force anyone to accept treatment if they haven't harmed themselves or anyone else.
But long-term addiction IS a form of harming oneself.

Take, for another example, a woman who has a spouse that's addicted to say, meth, and has become very destructive. He smashes up furniture and the woman doesn't trust him around her kids. In an emergency situation, her only choice may be to call the cops and press charges against him, forcing her to force her husband to have a record. Either way, she obviously needs to leave him, but rather than calling the cops, it'd be nice to call for an emergency mental health stay. That's not a thing you can do (other than in Florida, as far as I know).

    I'VE GOT ONE!

I really don't like a lot of the slogans for Breast Cancer Awareness month ("save the boobies" "save a life, grope your wife"). And while I think it is great to bring awareness, I think part of the reason it has gotten so much attention is because...boobs. Seriously.
Working in oncology and in the past with breast cancer patients, I will say that this topic makes my blood boil.  I especially cringe every time I see a little kid wearing a bracelet that says, "boobies" .  The pink craze makes me want to vomit.
And again, I would never say it is a bad thing to bring awareness to any disease but it overshadows a lot of other important diseases/issues. Why aren't we talking about lung cancer more? Heart disease?

Guess what else October is an awareness month for? Domestic violence. Many people don't realize this because everything is about breast cancer and pink that month. For example, I would love if the NFL wore some purple gear instead of pink just ONE Sunday out of the month to bring some awareness to the issue, but overall, they don't.
Honestly, there are oncology indications with a much more aggressive metastasizing and mortality rates than breast cancer that NEED attention. They NEED money.  The PFS hurdle to get a breast cancer drug approved is incredibly high because we actually have pretty decent drugs at the moment.  The PFS hurdle for pancreatic cancer?  2, maybe 3 months.  This means a drug can be approved because it adds just 2 or 3 months to your life - that is how little we have to offer pancreatic cancer patients.  Granted, it appears to be a much more complicated disease from a pathophys perspective, but that means we need more money for it, which comes from more awareness.  Honestly, if it wasn't for celebrities dying of PC there would be a hell of a lot less attention on the indication, which is a shame given its impact.

    /gets off soapbox

I totally agree with you with the example of the NFL and causes like domestic violence.  There are so many issues that deserve time in the spotlight.  Even 1 weekend in the spotlight would result in those causes receiving meaningful funds.

  • @Loolaide I don't know where you even came up with your claim that I'm arguing with the studies conclusions, or even that I'm spreading misinformation. And there was certainly no need for your condescending tone. The study DID find that countries with stricter gun laws have higher murder rates (the screenshots you posted cite different studies). The part that's debatable is how (or if) that data can be extrapolated to countries like the US. Certainly we have to take other data (such as the studies in the link you posted) into consideration. We also have to think about how different our country is from most others in that the current laws differ so greatly from state to state.

I think @ColeRose‌ is right, though, in that we can all agree that we need to do something. We are all appalled at the senseless killings in our schools and other public places, and events like those do call us to action. Maybe we (as in our country) would get closer to some solutions if both sides could debate issues with respect and without personal attacks.

You cited Harvard's studies and I said what they actually said and you argued with their reasoning. That's how I came up with it.

Thanks for mentioning how condescending it sounded. Cole You made an original point.
Um...no. I mentioned the Harvard study ("Would Banning FireArms Reduce Murder and Suicide"), in which the conclusion was "no, it would not." Read the study. That's what it says. And I didn't argue with anyone's reasoning. I made a comment in reference to DC (before you even added the link) as a counter to your assertion that the results of the study don't apply to the US. Which is actually a debatable point, but doesn't change the results of the study.

  • I feel like a lot of gun control laws are nothing more than political posturing on both sides. There are a shit-ton of guns and bullets in the hands of Americans. Most of these people are responsible, some of them aren't. Most of them are good guys, some of them aren't. Sometimes the bad guys, crazy people, and children who don't know any better are going to get the good guys' guns and do bad things.

But, regardless of what happens with laws from here on out, all of those guns and stockpiles of ammo are out there. And they're staying out there. There's no takesies-backsies, that just wouldn't work in practice.

I like Chris Rock's idea the best. It's just as bad or good as anything else as it seems nobody's ever really going to do anything to improve our society when it comes to this scary category of total bullshit:

    1. No, I think we need some bullet control. I think every bullet should cost five thousand dollarsFive thousand dollars for a bullet. Know why? Cos if a bullet cost five thousand dollars, there'd be no more innocent by-standers.

On gun control, here in Canada we have stricter gun control legislation and fewer deaths by guns. Is there a correlation? I tend to think so.

  • What is the reason people are so against stricter gun laws? I don't know too much about it, but I just assumed people were only lobbying for a more detailed process in acquiring guns...not taking then away from people all together.

I know a lot of people who are terrified of where gun control may lead. They think it will start out with background checks and registration and end up with the government knocking on their door taking all their guns away. I think it also bothers a lot of people that if someone wants to kill someone they will do it with any weapon they can find, whether they have a gun or not. And lastly, if you make it harder to obtain a gun legally, then all your doing is making it more difficult for honest people to obtain guns. Criminals will get guns no matter what. The same way crack is still sold even though it's illegal.

I know this because I am close with a lot of gun owners who are also very conservative.
