Re: Breast Feeding, Post all your questions dumb or otherwise here

  • @ns1 , I can nurse in my Boba 4g, which is a SSC, I just loosen the sides and lower her to the breast, which I lift out of the top of my shirt. The sleeping hood provides some privacy. For your specific kinds of carriers, I would search youtube for videos of how to nurse in those carriers-- there are a lot of helpful videos out there.  Good luck!

  • Does ebf poop start getting smellier? Ds poop is normal and all but I've noticed a smell over the past couple of days. Not foul, just smellier.

    Normal?

    Normal?

It may fluctuate a little while ebfing, but the stank doesn't really come until they start solids.

  • Yeah its not like the smell when you know a baby went poop. I smell it only when his diaper is off. Its kinda off putting but not terribly.

Nursing in a carrier...how do you do it?? I have a moby, beco, and that free seven slings thing...and a ring sling. I use my moby most often at this age and the main reason I can't figure it out is I can't lift my shirt from under all the knots! Does one type of carrier work better for nursing or is there a secret I don't know?

Some days I manage to nurse DD in the babybjorn, somedays it doesn't work. First, you need a shirt that you can pull down to get your boob out. Then you loosen the carrier to get the baby latched on, once LO is nursing you can rebuckle the carrier to keep walking around, but that doesn't always work! When I posted on the BFing board to ask for the best carrier to nurse in, people recommended a ring sling. I have the free one but haven't tried it yet.

  • @danagmauro i don't know why i even leave my recliner.
  • question. how to you fit in a pumping session to create a stash? i plan on creating a stash at some point for when DS begins solids as you can use breast milk for rice cereal and other recipes.

I plan on continuing to EBF DS, but a small freezer stash never hurt anyone.

Hmm okay. DS still gets up every 2-3 hours to feed at night, I probably could pump one side while he eats from the other since he only empties one side before passing out again.

I would refill in time for his next waking, right?

I pump 30 minutes after DD eats in the morning. Unusually feed her in bed and when she's done i get up, put her in her seat, brush teeth, etc. , make myself breakfast and pump while I eat. I

  • Can you over feed a breast fed baby? All my little guy wants to do is eat. Like 20 minutes after he already are. 7 weeks tomorrow. I thought he already had his six week spurt but maybe not?

From what I understand, you cannot overfeed a BF baby. Also, the spurts can hit them before or after the "standard" time, because each baby is different.
You can't. But I definitely worry that I am. DS spends a lot of time on the boob. Now when he's done one side ilk sit him up and talk to him or take him to his mat to play. If he's really hungry he will get upset so I'll offer more. But otherwise I can get half an hour for his tummy to digest and to get a good burp from him.
  • DD is 13 days old. She's gained back her birth weight and has a very healthy 5-6 poops/pees a day. The last three days she's started to sleep for longer stretches, about 3-4 hours at a time. I'm waking up once during the night and basically around 5am to feed her.  Today she slept for five hours.

DH is concerned that we should be waking her to eat because from 4pm-9pm she doesn't want to leave the breast. We go see the pedi on Fri, so we're going to ask but I figured I'd come looking for info here too.  Should we be waking her or can I let her sleep? I want to let her sleep and figure as long as we're getting a good # of feedings in plus the bottle supplements (I've been pumping for the last week under the advice of my LC) then we should be ok.  Thoughts?
  • @h&h2014 I say if shes gained it back then don't wake a sleeping baby. Besides, 3-4 hours is normal.

  • I wouldn't wake her. Sounds like normal evening cluster feeding. https://kellymom.com/parenting/parenting-faq/fussy-evening/

Don't wake a sleeping baby. That's a normal interval. And the evening thing is normal as well. It's cluster feeding.

  • Great, thanks ladies.
  • When do your nipples stop aching? Whenever I'm not nursing and they get hard (which seems to be whenever the wind blows.. Or always) they ache. Is this normal? Does it go away?
  • Dumb question: So I was told the rule for breast milk is 6-6-6 (hours at room temp, days in fridge, months in freezer). If I take milk from the fridge and bring it to room temperature for my baby to eat, is it still good for 6 hours out? Or should I use it withing an hour like formula at that point?

I'm just curious because it would be handy to get my 3 am feeding bottle ready before bed and leave it on my night stand if it's safe.

Or when they rub against your shirt or when baby brushes them. Me too. Midwife said it's normal just annoying. I got the jack Newman cream and I am trying that to keep the soreness down. But I hear it can last a while. DS is 6 weeks and it's starting to die down when he latches.

I'm right here.  I watched season 2 of OITNB and felt so much empathy with Polly with her boobs just hanging out everywhere.  I'm sure I'm my UPS guy's favorite house too.

I know I'm a few days late with this post but I thought I'd reply cause you sound just like me last week! I've started pumping one side while she does her morning feeding and then when she's done her routine is to nap so I quickly unhook put her down and then finish pumping both sides. (to build supply pump 5 minutes after milk stops flowing), Also just to note your breasts don't ever get completely empty. The emptier they are the more milk you produce. The flow will be slower when you're not as full and might frustrate baby but you're never actually empty. I found this Kellymom fact site really helpful at understanding my milk production.

  • Any suggestions on bottle feeding the BF baby? We try to feed her once a day from the bottle. LO will consistently only take 1 oz from the bottle (no matter if it is me, my DH, or my mom) and then refuses the rest. After a lot of screaming and trying Ill give her the rest of her feeding from the breast. Since she's taking the first ounce I don't think it's the bottle/nipple that we have an issue with. We use Dr Browns. I'm going to try the TT kind too. Any other suggestions? We've tried the night time feeding and a daytime feeding. TIA!

Is it just BM ? Or do you add to it?
  • @florassecret‌ just BM nothing added. I started w 2.5-3o in a bottle hoping she'd get in a good feeding and sleep longer at night. I saved the left over for one feeding but still end up wasting BM which breaks my heart as I don't have a stash established yet. I guess I'll start with only 1.5-2 next time so I don't waste as much. Just wish she'd take more at a time.

Maybe the bottle then. I haven't introduced a bottle so i have no experience there. Tricky I'm sure when you want her to eat or know she's hungry.

I do hear though some BF babies just don't like.bottles in general. I plan on pumping to create a stash soon and I have 1 bottle that came with the pump I'd use for emergencies but the longer he's not introduced to one the less likely he will take it I'm sure.

But I.dont have an idea. I'm just thinking out loud.

Or maybe it's a temperature thing? BM is warm. Is her bottle warm too? I'm usually here nor there on having to warm but another guess.
  • @florassecret‌ thanks for your ideas. I'm going to buy a new bottle today to try. I thought about the temp too. We tried re-warming but she still refused. Just so curious why she'll take it for a little bit then refuse the rest. We have some time before I go back to work but I'd like to get this down so I can have someone else feed her if/when needed. Good luck on starting to pump!
  • @KellyQ116‌ are you burping in between ounces or after she gets that first ounce in? Maybe she's filling up on air? I haven't had any issues with my LO going between breast and bottle but maybe try ordering different types of nipples online. They're cheaper than a whole new bottle and easier to store. The flow may be slower than she is used to and getting tired after an ounce? Or too fast? I hope through trial and error you can figure it out! Good luck.
  • @mollynicole214‌ we've tried both pacing her feed (per LC) with burps and switching sides (trying to mimic BFing) as well as just letting her at it (per Pedi) and it seems an ounce is all we get before she protests the rest. I bought 2 new bottles today so we'll see how that goes. You were right it would prob be cheaper to buy just the nipples online. I couldn't believe they were so expensive but I was impatient! I didn't think about be flow being too slow compared to the breast - just assumed the bottle would be faster but that's something to consider too. Thanks!
  • Maybe this has been asked. It's more about feeding breast milk through a bottle. But defrosted breast milk is OK to use with 24 hours? So of she doesn't drink all of it at once I can stick it in the fridge and try again later up to 24 hours?

    It's a BOY

  • @JKBMA2014‌ my LC and Pedi said I could use half consumed milk for 1 more feeding but probably not longer than 24 hrs later.
