  • Not an opinion per say, because I don't care either way, but can someone explain to me the ear piercing infant girls? I just feel under-educated on the subject.

Yeah - this was a big topic of conversation on this local radio talk show.... they made it seem like quite the controversy... had no idea...

  • The iPad things bugs be because it looks stupid AND the camera is really crappy. FIL will use his iPad even though his phone has a way better camera.

@wasnotwas I think its a cultural thing. For some cultures it's weird for a little girl to NOT have her ears pierced. I remember one of my friends telling me that in Mexico they would pierce the baby girls ears in the hospital before they went home.

  • @wasnotwas Someone with experience may chime in, but isn't one of the rationales behind piercing infant ears is that the parent can do a better job caring for them while they heal?
That's what I've heard, but the fear of infection would be enough reason for me not to do it. We don't have the cultural influence @araziza mentioned either so I'm just curious.

No!  I live in Cleveland!  Apparently it is a nationwide phenomena to talk about it today!

  • @wasnotwas - AHH.. That makes more sense.

And I agree.  Granted, some celebrity parents make some horrible choices (Lindsay Lohan's mom comes to mind... but is she even a celebrity??) but to be constantly under a microscope for a job that you are definitely not going to make every exact right choice by every critic is really unfair.  They are being set up to fail no matter what they do.

  • Honestly, I wish I would've done my girls ears when they were babies. They only cry for a second, they don't mess with them, you can keep them clean while they heal. Now, DD1 wants hers done, and H and I agreed she's old enough to take care of them. But, I think it's going to be a bigger hassle than if I had just done it early on.

To this point, I got mine done at 8 but it was a HUGE deal and my parents were all over me to take care of them (and then I didn't wear earing for like 7 years...). My parents didn't even bother with my sister and as an adult, she still doesn't have her ears pierced. So I understand not wanting to deal with the hassle.

Someone called into the station this morning and talked about how it can be a bargaining tool in the teen years like, "Mom, I want a tattoo" and the mom saying "well, let's start with getting your ears pierced and go from there"

Yah. She's been asking for a few years now, and we told her she had to be old enough to take care of them. But, I also know once we do hers, DD2 is gonna really drive us nuts about wanting hers done too. And, we'll hear about it until she's 8. Lol.
  • My mom made me wait until I was 13 to get my ears pierced and even though I was good about cleaning them, they still got really infected.  Despite that, I think I'm going to make DD wait until middle school.

My UO is that I don't feel even a little bit bad for Kim Kardashian. She's a reality whore. I do feel awful for the celebrities who try to stay out of the spotlight and just can't get away from the paparazzi.
Pre-baby I would have agreed with you 100% but now that she has a kid I can only agree with you 80%, I am very defensive of those in the mom club. I think she is a terrible human being, but I still want the best for her kid and her family.

Weighing in on the earrings--Personally, if I had a daughter, I would wait until she can ask for them.  But I don't really care what other people do with their children.  If the kid grows up and is mad at the parent for doing it, that parent will have to deal with the kid's anger, not me.

H says Lily has to wait until she is 10 to get her ears pierced.  MIL said she would turn us in for abuse if we pierced them as a baby.  I work in with a lot of black people (not all of them are African or American), and they all wanted to know why we hadn't pierced her ears yet.  I started to gather that it's a cultural thing.

ETA: I was 7 when I got my ears pierced.  I had to be old enough to ask and I wanted them.  I now have 4 piercings in one ear and 3 in the other.

My uo is I don't understand how people-like my spoiled 14yr sis-really need an iPod, iPhone, iPad, a kindle, and laptop. I can understand if you need it for work. But like my sister, she has all of them, uses only one of them probably and the rest just sit in her room. It just really seems like a lot to me. Edited to add that I don't mean anything against people that have all this. My sister doesn't need all this really, but if others do and they use them all, that's great. I just hate seeing her have them, but never actually use them.

  • @LimaBeanMOM‌ I thought the show got a lot better as the season went on and they went into the stories of the other characters. But if it's not your cup of tea, no flames from me :)

We did it for three reason. One we can keep it clean and two they don't pull on them while they are healing. Lastly they don't remember the pain. May be silly reason but it's what worked for us.
