Nurseries and Baby Gear

carseat canopies

DD1 was a winter baby, so by the time summer rolled around, we could slather her up in sunscreen. Since it isn't recommended until 6 mo or older, we need to come up with a different approach this time around. The car seat canopies seem really thick to me, like they would get very hot inside very easily. If you use one or know someone who does, how hot does it get inside on a hot day? Could I get away with strapping (kind of like a tent) a receiving blanket onto the carseat or would that be more trouble than it's worth. Our infant stroller will be the snap n go type where they stay in the carseat carriers (yes they. It's twins thud time around). TIA.

Just use an Aden and anais muslin swaddle blanket. They are so lightweight and will protect from the sun's rays. They are also big so you shouldn't have to constantly worry about it collapsing down onto baby.

THIS!!!! It's exactly what we did. Those blankets are perfect for this! They are so airy that it stays pretty cool under them.

  • Excellent. :-) After feeling the fabric on the carseat canopies, I just couldn't imagine them staying cool, so I was thinking something along the lines of what you just mentioned. Another quick question. How do you keep the wind from continually blowing them off where they need to be to shade the baby?

You can tuck corners under the canopy on the carseat, you could get mini clothes pins also.

I usually tucked a corner under baby's feet when she was sleeping.

  • I love Aden and Anais but could never get mine to stay on the car seat.

I bought a car seat cover that had SPF built in. It had a screen and then you pull the spf layer over that. It allowed air in.

It is very similar to this one but I paid much less:

  • I'm also expecting twins and will be getting the Aden and anais blankets to use over the car seats too. My last car seat had a little lip where I can tuck a blanket into it. If my new ones don't then I'm prob use the mini clothes pins idea. I think that would work well.

  • From what I recall reading 1.5 years ago (however may have changed) is that there are two different sizes of the A&A blankets. One is intended to be sold more in botique type stores (is larger & a tad tighter weave & slightly softer), while the other is in multipacks at big box style stores (i.e. Target/BBB; is slighyly smaller for dimensions). Both are on Amazon, would get a few of the larger sized ones and use those over the stroller. If it's super hot, you won't need to wrap the babies up as much and the car seats tend to be rather cozy.

For the rare times when the blanket would really catch the breeze, can use hair clips, or put a little bit of the hook part of a onesided sticky velcro strip on the exterior edge of the hood & they'll hold the blanket without completly mangling it.

    Congratulations on your additions.

  • oh and I also used those baby rings (the kind you hang toys from) on the edge of the stroller sunshade (would work if not driving on edge of carseat canopy) so would slip over the edge of canopy and then could slide edge of blanket in to hold in place
