Returning to work and DC

Hi! This is my first post on here and would love some responses. I have an almost 8 month old, but took the year off. I am a teacher and will return in August. LO will be 9 months when she starts daycare. I was wondering about the DC's nap schedule. Her class takes a nap at 9:45 and 3:30. Are these normal times? At the moment, she naps at 8:30 and 1 then bed at 630. Also, I get off at 3:20 and wanted to pick her up from DC ASAP. But, I would hate to go get her during her nap. Any suggestions? Thoughts? I'm a FTM and have lots of anxiety about her going to daycare.

Re: Returning to work and DC

  • at that age my son napped on demand. so while those seem like ok times, i would still ask if they can be a little flexible. If you get off at 320-what time can you be at daycare? maybe ask them to keep her up until you get there and then you can nap her at home? that might push bed time a little later too....

  • I will definitely ask if they will be flexible. Seems like a long awake time for a nine month old. I can be at daycare by 3:45. DC also mentioned that she may be in the infant room where they do nap on demand. I may just request her be in that room if possible.
  • 3:30 seems really late.  When DS was 9 months old, he was in the infant room so he napped on demand.  They had scheduled quiet times, but generally the babies just nap whenever they want.  When we moved up to the toddler room around 12 months, they were only taking 1 nap.

  • Our DC does not do scheduled nap time until the children move to the toddler room.  My 9mo DD is not the best napper at DC, but tends to take a 30 minute nap around 10 and an hour+ in the afternoons.  Sometimes DH picks her up during her afternoon nap.  He transfers her from the swing/crib to the car seat and she usually stirs a little, but falls back to sleep once they are in the car.  He carries her carrier in the house and sometimes she will sleep for another 30-40 minutes at home.

My sister is a teacher and also has a DD in the same DC room as my DD.  She does the same thing my DH does or sometimes she will take that opportunity to go grocery shopping so that her DD can finish nap time at DC.

Bottom line - I wouldn't worry about it yet. (easier said than done, I know). Your LO might change nap preferences by then and/or adapt to the DC's schedule once she is there for a week or two.

3:30 seems really late.  DD is still in the "crawlers" room (age 6 months to 1 year) and they nape at 9 and 1.

  • We started DC 4 months ago with our 2 year old and DD will start there next month. I am 99% sure in the 8 month - 18 month room they nap on demand because I will pass by and see some kids playing and others napping. If that's not the case, that still seems super late to me. When DS was that age, he napped from 8:30-10:00 and then from like 1:30 or 2:00 until 3:00 or 3:30 and then was up until bedtime at 7:00.

That being said, your LO would likely adjust and do fine. When we started DC, DS napped from 1:00-4:00 every day. DC has a 12:30-2:30 nap in his room. He went down earlier just fine and was okay with an hour shorter nap. And now he even does the same type of nap at home of his own accord.

DS still napped on demand at DC at that age.  He moved to one set nap time on a cot when he moved into the toddler room at about 17 months.

  • I guess our DC is a little bit different than everyone else's.  The infant room sleeps on demand. DD moved to the "creeper" room at 10 months and they transitioned to one nap per day.  Their scheduled nap time was right after lunch so about 12:30. I was very worried about it but it turned out to be great.  DD didn't take long to adjust and it was so nice to only worry about one nap a day on weekends.  She also slept better at night.
