NWMR: Pay for Teen Helper

A friend of mine sent out a request for odd jobs for her teen daughter to earn money this summer.  I offered up a couple of organization projects that she's going to work on.  They are as follows:

Sort, organize, type all my grandmother's handwritten recipes to make a book for the family (estimate 10 hours of work)

Organize and clean out all my craft supplies (estimate 5 hours work)

They said I could pay her by the project vs by the hour.  But what do I offer to pay?

Re: NWMR: Pay for Teen Helper

  • what an odd request.  I'd pay by project because who knows how much effort a teenager is going to put into anything when her mom is looking for a job for her.  Maybe $20/project

  • How old a teen?  If it's someone on the older side (ie. old enough to get a "real job"), I'd figure out a rate around minimum wage or a bit above and multiply it by the number of hours you estimate for the job.  If below that age, I'd probably drop the rate a bit.
  • That's a hard one. As a teen I always took my job very seriously so you might have a hard worker on your hands. But realistically is anyone going to do the work straight out- how do you manage the time to pay hourly?

I think for the cookbook- I would do like $8 an hour and say $80 since you estimate 10 hours of work. If she needs more time to finish then pay her more. I feel like this is a project that could take a lot of time though and thought as it would be a special thing for the family.
