Separation Anxiety???

DS is 21 months old and until about a week ago, has been a great sleeper.  7:30 rolls around and we start his night time routine, put him in the crib and he's out.  All of a sudden, we start the night routine and he flips out - once we bring him to the crib, he gets hysterical and doesnt want to go to sleep.  The only way he will lay down is if we lay next to him on the floor.  Has anyone else gone through this? TIA!

    I thought for a moment this was my post from last week. Nearly same age, same bedtime - used to be a great sleeper - and now screams and cries unless I stay with him. He recently upped his game by forcing himself to stay awake as long as possible so I "couldn't" leave. Last night was a back and forth game between his room and mine with him finally passing out at 9:30. He does a little better with Dad in the room - at least then he doesn't fight to stay awake as long. On top of all this he also has anxiety about daycare drop offs all of a sudden too.
