Conceiving for gender question

My DH and I had sex on the day I was ovulating and got pregnant. Now I hear that in order to better your chances of having a girl (which we are hoping for) you are to have sex a few days before you ovulate, not on the date. Did anyone have sex on the day and then find out it's a girl?

  • My best friend swore by the Shettles method. When I told her I was pregnant, I also told her my DH & I did the deed 3-4 days prior to ovulation. She excitedly proclaimed, "Girl! You are definitely having a girl then." ...We are having a boy. I don't think she puts much stock into those kinds of methods anymore!

Just for shits, I'll answer seriously,

We DTD 2/3 days prior, and (I think) one day after. I'm having a girl. So, it worked, I guess? According to the 2/3 days prior?

Just for fun, would I maybe try to have a boy next time? Maybe, because I like statistics and charting. I'm also well aware that it's a 50/50 shot, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if I have another girl. It is what it is. Mostly, I'm amazed I got pregnant so quickly. Charting WORKED.*

I thought to have a girl you inserted a skittle into your vag. It confuses the boy sperm and lures them away from the egg. We all know little girl spermettes are MUCH smarter and don't fall for such trickery, so once they boys are out of the way they can take their time getting to the egg.

Trust me I'm having a girl.
    Heh heh, dumb boy sperms.
  • We tried for months, this time we only tried the day I ovulated and we're having a girl.

    That's what I did wrong!

Ok, seriously, this is actually one of those things that's theoretically based on the fact that theoretically, Y sperm swim faster and X sperm live longer. So if there's already an egg, the Ys are theoretically more likely to get in, but if they have been hanging around for a while, the Xes are theoretically more likely to get in. Lol, sorry for all the "theoreticallys." It is a scientific hypothesis based on a fact - you can always demonstrate that a hypothesis isn't supported by statistically significant results. That doesn't make it an invalid question. We dtd on O day to conceive both times - one is a girl and one is a boy - and that is what they call anecdotal evidence. I.e., total BS. :)

  • It's not a hypothesis based on a fact, it's a hypothesis based on a theory concocted in this guy's head that has been disproven.

  • Now I just want skittles! Guess I'll be running to the store later. Mmmmmm skittles!

Technically a hypothesis is what a lot of people refer to as a theory these days. A theory is proven and a hypothesis is an idea yet to be proven. I married a scientist. I can't help, but pass along his particular pet peeve.

So, this guy's hypothesis was based on an assumption, definitely not fact, which has been disproven.

Sorry to break it to ya OP, but this is busted.

Also, you ladies made my morning.

Hmmm... I don't think you could be pregnant without ovulating... I can't tell if you are being sarcastic but I sure hope so.

All I can do with this question OP is just shake my head.

  • I love this BMB. So what if we just had a lot of sex before and after ovulation?? Twins?? Even if the ultrasound showed only one??
  • Thanks ladies! This was a fun read! I will have to stock up on skittles for next time =))

But it depends on what kind of skittles! There are so many different flavors to choose from now! Ugh!! How will I decide what kind of baby I'm having!
  • I don't know what day I ovulated. I don't know what the gender of this baby is. Coincidence? I don't think so.
