Toddlers: 24 Months+

Taking a three year old to a play

I'm a teacher. Several of my former students are in their middle schools' musical The Little Mermaid. I'd like to see it. DD1 turns three in a couple of weeks. She's really into the princesses right now. Would it be appropriate to take her? I'm thinking yes, but would appreciate any thoughts.

This may depend on your child. It could be a combination of the attention span of your child, how interested she is in the play and then all the other factors that affect toddlers - hunger, sleep, mood, etc.

I would take her but be prepared with an exit strategy in case things take a turn.

  • I think so! I'm sure she'd love it.  We are going to start taking DS to shows at around 3 years old.

  • Depends on the kid and the play.  I took DD and her friend, both just about 4 to Fancy Nancy the Musical.  DD's friend's eyes were glued to the stage,  DD walked up and down the aisle and after 45 min wanted to leave, thankfully it was only an hour.  She has been to the movies though.  I think part of problem was you really had ot pay attention to the songs to know what they were saying.  A middle school play may also need a little more concentration than she might have, but you can give it a shot.
  • You'll never know if you don't try it out, so I would bring her. Like a PP said a play at the school is better to experiment with than a Broadway show.

  • Another "depends on the kid."  Mine does better at live performances than television/movies.  We took him to see a Victorian melodrama shortly after he turned 2, sitting near the exit to make a quick escape and he LOVED it.  Sat through all 30/45 minutes of it.  Whereas he tunes out the tv after about 15 minutes.

This.  Try to sit on an end in case you need to take off early, but I'd definitely take her to try.  We're taking DD to Disney on Ice the week she turns 3 this fall, and hopefully taking her to a theater show geared toward kids this summer.

Yes, a middle school performance will likely have lots of littles in the audience.

Ditto what every one else said. Our local high school does kids plays all summer. I brought DD and DS today. There were a SLEW of kids from newborns to teens. At slower parts in Peter Pan you could hear the little ones stirring but as soon as a song started again they were all fine. As pps mentioned I brought puffs for DS. When he would get restless I would give him a few, but overall he was enthralled and did WAY better than I ever would have hoped.
