For me, I heard a little pop, like a rubber band snapping sound. Then a trickle of liquid began streaming down my leg like I was peeing only I couldn't stop. It was nothing like discharge. Sometimes the trickle would slow, but then I'd move or walk and it would sort of gush a bit. HTH
I had been having contractions for about 24 hours. They were coming about every 5 minutes or so and we were trying to get some sleep since they didn't seem to be picking up in intensity, so I was in bed. In the middle of a bad one, I felt a pop. I waited for the contraction to end, jumped out of bed, and gush. So it was pretty obvious for me.
My water broke during labor both times (which is what happens most commonly), so I didn't need to play the "was that my water?" guessing game.
Baby #1--broke in a huge gush and was basically like Niagara Falls was coming out of my vag the rest of my labor. This was every bit as gross as it sounds.
Baby #2--I felt a pop and a small gush of fluid during a contraction, then baby's head corked things right up and I didn't leak any more after that, which was nice. I was actually in the shower when this happened and it was still obvious--usually when you shower you don't feel the shower water inside your vagina.

I had lost my mucus plus 2x before my water ended up breaking. I had BH a few nights beforehand. I actually felt really good the day of (I was at work). I had been sitting at my desk and thought that I needed to go pee. I stood up and felt a gush of liquid. I knew without a doubt that my water had broken. I ran to the bathroom and it just kept coming out in spurts. I went home and took a shower and wore a towel diaper the rest of the 12 hours that I labored at home, before heading to the hospital.
I was being induced so had had a dose of cervidil at 10pm. About 7:30 the next morning, I was laying in bed and heard/felt a pop and then a gush and rushed to the toilet. Contractions then started immediately and were intense.
It woke me up at 4:15 am with a little pop. I had been having some painless contractions the night before which I thought was BH, but obviously weren't. I sat up and some more came out...then I had a small panic attack
I said to DH - sweetie, not to make you panic or anything, but i think my water just broke.
Same here re: the crochet-hook type instrument at the hospital-- they ended up breaking my water while I was in L&D, about an hour or so after I got my epi, so I didn't really feel much besides the warm fluid on my leg once it came out. I went from about 5 cm to 10 in about an hour after that and definitely intensified my contractions. I had DS about 2 hours later.
Like @mrscurlygurl I was being induced, they started the cervadil to soften my cervix around 5pm then at 4:20am right after the nurse had left the room I rolled to my side and heard a loud pop like a balloon popping then a huge gush of water. Contractions started coming non stop and the pain went from 1-10 in a matter of seconds. I told DH to call the nurse and tell her my water broke because I could barely breath and started having a minor meltdown at that point. His response was are you sure it broke? Once my water broke, labor seemed to progress quickly and DS was here at 11:25am.
I started leaking right before I pushed with my first and it just felt like warm water on my inner thigh. With my second they had to break my water so I could push and it was like a tidal wave. I didn't feel that though because of my epidural.
Let's see...I was about 8cm dilated and my MW shoved what looked like a crochet hook up my vag. The feeling was a very warm flooding sensation.
Similar experience. I was ready to push and DD was in a bit of distress, so they broke my water with a crochet hook type of thing to speed things along. I had no meds, and there was no pain, just the feeling of a ton of warm water pouring out. I was on my side so my leg was soaked. I was also wearing fuzzy white socks (my feet were cold yo) and one was soaked. My mom, bless her, took my socks to my house and washed the blood and fluid out of them. I'd have tossed them.
I woke suddenly at 1:30 am and felt the pop and a little gush. Stood up and had the full gush. Nothing like discharge or peeingg yourself. It kept coming and soaked me. I wish I had already had the huge post partum pads. I went to the hospital with a beach towel between my legs, soaked my flip flops, and left a puddle at the L&D desk. It was the start of my glamorously sexy birth experience.
ETA-even though I had been in preterm labor for a week and a half I never had any contractions that night or following my water breaking. I ended up needing a csection anyway since she was breech.
I was already in labor, padding up and down the hospital hallway and felt like I needed the bathroom. As I sat down, I felt a snap, like a rubber band or a water balloon then had a couple of spurts of liquid, maybe 4-5 little gushes and that was apparently it.
My friend asked her OH for sexytimes to help her along, got up to go to the bathroom first and hers broke as she sat up on the edge of the bed in one huge gush. Her OH tried to convince her she'd just peed so he could still have sexytimes )
With DS, I felt a little trickle so I went to the bathroom and saw nothing. When I stood up from the toilet I had the huge, dramatic gush. There was no mistake at all as to what happened. It didn't stop for a while either and I just stayed in the bathroom while DH called the doctor and got our bags. It was pretty unpleasant.
I was 39w3d, with no contractions or inkling anything was happening. Went for a pedicure at lunch, back to my desk and my water broke an hour later... It was very obvious
I was in bed trying to go to sleep. No pop or anything but I was suddenly all wet. Sheets were soaked. Got up, cleaned up a bit, put on the largest pad I had, and went to the hospital. They were pretty much like yeah, right, your water broke, but I undressed and everything was soaking. They put me in bed with a bunch of pads, and they got wet too. Then people started to believe me and I started having contractions soon after.
I was at work and went to the bathroom and peed and had a BM. I was of course using this time to Facebook/bump as well when I noticed I kept having to pee which I thought was unusual since I was going so frequently lately I only peed small amounts. It was not coming out on its own, I had to squeeze like I do to pee so I really thought it was pee. It crossed my mind it could be my water but I was 36 weeks so I thought no... I stood up and some came our involuntarily and I thought great I'm incontinent now. I went to go see a patient and when I was finished it happened involuntarily again. I still thought pee but decided to have it checked out in case it was the real deal I didn't want to have to go to the ER that night, plus I didn't enjoy my wet pants. So basically it was really confusing because it happened while peeing and felt like I was peeing. The differences were more was coming out than usual, some was coming out involuntarily, and it had a different smell.

Mine broke at the hospital after I had been in active labor for a few hours. I had a balloon catheter in and I felt a big pop and then a ton of pressure as the catheter fell out. The water came out in a very big gush all over the place, there was no mistaking it for discharge in my case.
Eta: it also had meconium in it so it was kind if brown, not clear. If yours breaks and it's not clear make sure to tell your doc, they will take special measures when your LO is born in case they swallowed some.

This. Exactly. Except 6:30am.
Mine was a huge gush. It felt like someone poured a warm Big Gulp all over my lap.
I had gone to the hospital after a few hours of contractions, lost my m plug, and then my water broke which felt like a water balloon bursting in my crotch. The nurses were like "are you sure you think your water broke?" I was like "uhhhhhh...." :-S
With DS1 my water broke in the hospital as I was getting up to go to the bathroom. Thought I peed myself but it was definitely my water. DD1 was an induction so I got the crochet hook looking thing. Now DD2 was a bit more exciting of a story because my water broke while I was at work, in a dress :-O so fortunately I had really nice coworkers who helped clean up the puddles I was leaving in my cubicle while trying to find something to stuff in my underwear to keep the liquid from overflowing all over the place because a pad wasn't helping. It was all so embarrassing!
My water broke at 4 am while I was sleeping. It woke me up and I went in to the bathroom..... It was a constant trickle for a few more minutes. Not a huge gush like you see in the movies. Clear liquid. I just knew instinctively what it was. Didn't start having meaningful contractions for a few hours later, then I went to the hospital and got the bloody show... Full on contractions.... And the fun began.
Mine broke while I was sleeping. Didn't feel a pop or anything. Just had the urge to pee. When I got up I felt a bit of a gush but figured it was just pee. When I went to the bathroom I wiped myself and I kept on leaking. I wanted to control it like when you control your urine but it just kept coming out. When I tried putting on my underwear the whole thing just got soaked so then I figured my water did indeed break.
I think I felt it- I was already at the hosp and I was pushing, I think when I wasn't supposed to be (I don't follow directions)- or maybe I was- it's foggy, and I thought I pooped myself...but no one freaked out (I was watching DH, he'd have freaked) nor was there a smell, so I think it may have been water breaking. DS didn't fit down and I had an ECS...so I could be REEEEALLY off base with what I thought I felt, but there was SOMETHING going on down there.
We had spent the day in the hospital being monitored and it was valentines day. When we finally got home we were tired and decided to order delivery, it broke as we were waiting for our food. Lol my husband started to panic and called the restaurant to try to cancel our order, I'm sure they thought he was lying to get it faster. It showed up about 2 minutes later and he was so panicked he wouldn't let me eat at home.
My first two were broken in the hospital with what looked like an oversized crochet hook and my third broke one of the times the doc was checking me while in labor at the hospital so I don't really know how it would feel being in a more home setting.
With DS, my water broke as DH and I were standing in line at the post office to fill out a change of address form. We had just moved 4 days earlier. It was a pop, and a small trickle. I looked at DH and said, I think my water just broke. He said what do you want to do? I told him I needed to go home and change my shorts. Haha. I started having contractions and went to the hospital a couple of hrs later. My OB ended up using the crochet needle thing to break my water completely, since apparently I only had a slow leak Once he did that it was go time.
I know it's unlikely but I keep saying I hope mine breaks on its own. I'm scared I won't know real contractions from BH and wait too long to go to the hospital or call dh.
I bought a mattress protector pad today which means I just jinxed myself and it won't.
I was hanging out at home with friends from out of town and we were playing cards and laughing a lot. Every time I laughed, I felt like I peed a little. I kept going to the bathroom, but it didn't smell like pee. So finally I forced a few coughs and it only happened then. I had lost my plug a week prior and I had been timing waves of back discomfort all day so I thought well, maybe. My OB sent me to the hospital and the fern test showed it definitely was water. I was group B strep + so they did my IV and went to check me for dilation (I was already 2cm and 70% effaced at my OB appt 2 days before) and the second the nurse put her hand up there to check... GUSH. I don't know if I could've cried any harder. She laughed and said "I'm an L&D nurse... That's not the first time and totally not the most disgusting thing that's ever happened to me at work." Well, bully for you, but I just covered you in ickiness lol.
Btw... If you even THINK your water broke, go in. My friend called me and said her contractions were 4 minutes apart and she had peed her pants 5 times that day and just couldn't stop. I said does it smell like pee? She said no, but I know that's what it is. I told her to get to the hospital, she decided to wait the rest of the day for her Bf to get off work. When she got to the hospital it was in fact her water and when it was time to push, she had a dry birth. Which was horrific and both mom and baby had an infection.
At 4 am I went to roll over and heard a pop... Got out of bed and ran to the toilet. As soon as I sat down there was a huge gush of water! Every time I tried to stand up another huge gush happened! I swear I felt like I lost 20 lbs just with my water breaking!
Seems like a lot of hospitals don't take people seriously when they think their water has broken?
That was about the only thing the hospital took seriously with me. Pretty much everything else I had to argue over but the water breaking, they believed no questions asked. Weird.
Re: Tell Us About it... Your Water Breaking
This except I, perhaps fortunately, did not see what they used to break my water during my induction.
I said to DH - sweetie, not to make you panic or anything, but i think my water just broke.
He said "why would I panic"?
Riiiiiight...
