LO is afraid of everything

I'm hoping you ladies can help me with this problem. It's making it pretty impossible to leave the house lately which is not helping my PPD.

LO is a really mellow baby when we're at home. Hardly cries except when over tired or really hangry. But the second we go anywhere that has any sort of sound or more than 1 or 2 people talking at once, he freaks out.

We were at a wedding this weekend and he got scared from people clapping. Then he got scared when a few of my relatives said Hi to him by just smiling at him. Later we were in our hotel room and 5 of my relatives came to the room to hang out. We were all talking in normal voices and LO looked really upset, bottom lip out, ready to cry. I was able to head that one off at the pass by taking him out of the room into the hallway to calm down. Then just now I was at Chipotle and the noise of the restaurant and people made him start crying. I always try to plan things when he is not overtired or hungry but it doesn't seem to make a difference. I feel like the second we leave the house he becomes overstimulated and scared. I have a very large family with lots of parties and boisterous laughing people. I really don't want him to be afraid of all of that!

We are going to a graduation party this weekend for my SIL and I am dreading it. I'm probably going to have to hide upstairs in their bedroom the entire party. :(

LO will be 15 weeks tomorrow. Is this just a phase he's going through that he will eventually grow out of? Or is there something I should be doing to get him more used to loud noise and people? Or should I be sheltering him as much as possible from it? I'm at a loss. Halp!

  • Have you tried baby headphones? It could be that his hearing is very sensitive and he needs things toned down.

  • I'll look into baby headphones thanks @Noethola

@TyrannosaurusLex Thanks for the info. Glad to know it's developmentally normal. I tried wearing him in the ergo at the wedding and he still freaked. But he was freaked out already when I put him in there. Maybe if I do it from the beginning. Luckily this is our last family function for over a month so he can get a bit of a break.
  • I'd definitely wear him. It also keeps people from getting in his face as much, and you can flip up the hood if he's getting overstimulated.

  • Thanks ladies. :)

Yeah, even before this I've really had to regulate the holding with my family. Everyone wants to hold him and they don't understand when he starts crying. I try to limit it to only 1 or 2 people per party and I know my family is annoyed with me but I care more about LOs mental and emotional state then their need to squish a baby.

I just wish they could all see the happy smiley baby that he is at home. I think they all think he just cries all the time when it's the exact opposite. :(
  • Totally true. I've been on the other side of it with my cousin's babies where I just. had. to. hold. that. baby!!! If I knew then what I know now...I would have been less of a baby hog.

Though, there are certain family I want him to form a bond with like my Brother and SIL. But I'm sure that will just come with time. He won't always be afraid of them...I hope. ;)
  • Great idea @Bookshelves. He loves one of his sassy toys so I'll be sure to have that on hand this weekend. I wish he took a paci regularly. I feel like it would help him soothe. As it is I think I have a thumb sucker in the making...oy vey.
  • I second giving a comfort item. My daughter has a lovey that she uses still to this day at age 4.5. It gives her great comfort in strange situations.
I hope to create a real siggy but first I need some sleep!

  • I second tsex! LO is starting to do this too. she's fine at home but when we're somewhere else and there's too much noise, she freaks. so far she's ok in restaurants as long as she's in her car seat and is next to me but we'll see how long that lasts!
