So....you prefer out of shape, overweight guys?
Over thin yes. Built, big, and athletic sure. My DH is big. He is solid. At 6' right now he is 295lbs. When we started dating he was about 275 which was good on him he had a small belly but hardly any fat. When he left basic training with no fat he was 245. Most 6' mean are what? 185 or so? No thanks.
Yes. DH's doctor likes him to be in the 180s. Sometimes he dips into the 190s but he doesn't like carrying that weight. I don't care, I just want him to feel good about himself (and be healthy).

  • I really don't mind what sport DS takes up, just that he at least tries one. I feel like it's important to learn to work in a team atmosphere and how to practice good sportsmanship.

We're soccer, tennis, rugby crazy... but then again DH came from a very European family.

Gimme all the running. I was a runner in HS and would be lying if I didn't say I hope at least one of my kids enjoys it as well.
Only to here right now, but I think you can learn teamwork outside of sports too. I was very involved in music and learned at an early age that we were all relying on each other to be serious and practice and work together. Same goes for a lot of community service work I did where we had to pull together to come up with projects and execute them accordingly.

  • UO:  There is not reason to call someone after 9:30 p.m. at night unless you are dying.

Brought to you by my mom who called me at 9:30 last night to ask me for a grocery list for vacation, which is a month away.  Just no.
We put the smackdown on relatives years ago about this because they'd call really early or really late. 9pm-9am are off-limits unless it's an emergency or a special exception like we're supposed to get together.

My husband's build doesn't allow for 185. Skin and bones he was 245. His father is built the same way.

I care about my husband's health as well. He just lost 30lbs. He can stand to lose some more. Another 30 would be great for him. But who am I to talk when I need to lose a lot of weight.

My close friend's DH is 6'8" and he played the trumpet. He has absolutely no desire for athletics. He and my DH joke all the time because my DH is 6' and wished his entire life for some extra inches. DH tells friend's DH that he wasted all that height!
I have the world's longest fingers - was called ET fingers growing up, and my whole life people were like "AND YOU DON'T PLAY PIANO???"  My fingers were wasted.
Bwahahaha, your wasted fingers....oh the tragedy! I love how people say that!! I think it's only the people who wished for the long fingers and struggled with piano who really say it to people. My DH is so envious of our friend, but they only joke around about it!

I get the batting for sure. Especially as the pitching speed picks up the older and more accurate they get. I masks seems a bit newer to me. I'm on the fence about them. I realize you want safety but that would drive me insane to wear that. Guess it's a "normal" thing nowdays.
When I played lacrosse, the only safety gear we wore were mouthguards.  Now it's helmets with face masks or goggles  I'm kinda...meh about that.  It was so rare to get hit in the head and outside the rules to do so, so it seems like overkill (and there's the "helmets lead to worse injuries" argument in that, now that you have one, you play more aggressively since you and the other player "can't get hurt").  I get keeping kids safe, but some of the safety standards put into place recently seem like they're solving problems that don't really exist.
I always thought it was odd though that boys lacrosse players got helmets and pads and girls got nothing. Lacrosse was one sport I played, albeit for only a year, and enjoyed. But girls can be rough too. I was grateful for the mouth guard.

  • DH his brothers, and most of my nephews played football, so, if DS is interested, he probably will too.  I'm less worried about it because FIL is still a football coach and DH has coached, so he knows what to look for to make sure helmets are on properly, hits are being taught correctly, and the new "Heads Up" rules are being followed.

DD is not coordinated at all.  I hope to get her into dance just to build on her physical skills like balance and get her moving her body.  She is pretty lazy, always has been, so I'm not sure if she will take to any sports.  I wouldn't discourage any though.

I am going to enforce one thing at a time though.  The extracurricular activity schedules for some of these kids sports seem brutal.
My mom made me dance as a kid so I could learn how to manage my gangly, growing non-stop, body. It really helped me learn some grace even if I hated it. I think all kids should take some kind of dance class.
I took dance for a couple of years -- jazz and a little tap and a very little ballet. All I got out of it was people commenting that I was too stiff and needed to loosen up. Perhaps if the comments had been curbed, I would have felt more able to emerge from my shell a bit and loosen up.

Speaking of sports, my UO is I don't want DD playing softball. Yuck. I think I'll die if she wants to play.

Why? No snark, just curious. Why's it's yucky?
It's like baseball. Which I find so boring. There are so many games. It's not a once a week sport. And I'm such a girly girl, softball just seems so tomboyish to me.

I guess that's why I love it. It's tomboyish. But there were a ton of girly girls that played softball too (see: Pitchers  =)))

Yo, I was a pitcher and not at all a girly girl.

  • My obviously UO in my area:
I think that by 30 if you can't go out and just have a "few" drinks there's something wrong.  At our age, we do not need to get completely shitfaced everytime we go out.  I understand that once in awhile you don't feel it until it's too late, but the majority of the time, I think you should be able to control your liquor and just have a nice time.

We have a giant group outing tomorrow to go to a baseball game.  One of my former co-workers is coming.  Every single time she comes out she gets fall down, throwing up wasted.  I've stopped hanging out with her & inviting her to things because it's just not fun to be taking care of someone else who becomes completely irrational, pees their pants and throws up from time to time.
Ewww, totally agree. People need to control themselves.

My supervisor just had twins like 8 days ago.

She is working (from home) today. I just want to yell GO TO SLEEEEEEEEEEEP.

Mostly it just makes me feel inadequate because 8 days PP I was a fucking disaster and the last thing on my mind was work.
I'm assuming they're slightly premature. My guys were easy the first two weeks home. I looked like a rockstar. When they hit their actual 40 week date, they woke up and life got hard.
She was induced at 38 weeks. Her husband is home with her her entire leave though...so that might help.
  • I have a UO.

I don't like music when I drive. This week I realized that the radio really stresses me out. I would rather drive in silence than have the radio on. I do love listening to audio books in the car, it makes me feel like driving is a good use of time.

I love listening to pandora/spotify at home.

  • Just a question: We're really openly and candidly discussing male body types we find more attractive than others.  Would the same conversation in reverse--men discussing women's body types that are more or less attractive--be considered body-shaming or inappropriate?

For my part, I say no--that I have no issues with individuals having preferences like "I like thinner girls" or even the negative "I don't really think thin women are attractive."  But I feel like voicing that is looked down upon.

Here? Yes it would turn into "you're a body-shamer." No question. Remember the Miley Cirus thread a few months back? In (my) real life? I think it would just be a topic of conversation, a stating of preferences. Eta: typo

  • Hi There.  I live under a rock and just heard Iggy Azelea's 'Fancy' for the first time.  I lasted 22 seconds and then had to turn it off.  That shit is terrible.
I have no idea who that is nor do I know what the song is.

Honestly, this one I find less obnoxious.  It's her voice that I can't stand.  It's just terrible.  She's got a Kesha like quality to me.

I realize that most things in this genre aren't my thing, but I just wanted to know what all the hype was about.  I'm now even more confused.

  • Late to the party. Love bananas. Dislike banana-flavored anything. Blech. (This does not include banana bread & muffins bc that shit is delish.) Hoping our boys play soccer and/or golf. Golf is a sport/activity that is social and can help in the business world as an adult. And I don't mean it in an uppity way. Even if they don't play on a team, this will be something we will do as a family for sure. Both DH & I played soccer our whole lives and we both like the team aspect of it and the fact that is not as dangerous as some other sports.

I have a friend who has an 8 month-old baby.  Her in-laws come over every. single. weekend. to see the baby.  I told her she is a trooper to deal with that, and she was like "I don't have a choice.  I can't tell them they can't see their grandchild."

My "UO"- you always have a choice.  If it's not the best thing for your (immediate) family or marriage to have your in-laws over almost every day you aren't working, then TELL THEM SO.  It wouldn't wreck your relationship to ask for weekend with just the 3 of you.

... but I was too much of a wuss to say that to her.
I now feel better about the biweekly visits the first year. Setting boundaries did completely backfire on me, so maybe your hesitation isn't a bad thing. ;) I love involved gparents but it can be overkill.
I'm probably being a judgemental jerk... honestly it wouldn't bother me in the least if it didn't bother her so much, but I don't say anything because her family dynamics is something they need to figure out themselves.  Out of curiosity, how did setting boundaries backfire on you?  Did it damage your relationship?
  • @dimples12 That's rough!  Melding families and backgrounds and personalities can be so hard even when everyone's intentions are good and hearts are in the right place.  I think it's kind of common for grandparents to be terrified that they'll be cut off from their grandkids, even if there's no reason to think that would happen :(
  • MOTY, the boys both sing "turn down for what". In my defense, they watched that YouTube videos of the kittens dancing like a million times the other day.
