buying homemade baby food

would you buy homemade baby food? if the person had all the permits, health inspections, etc... and it was cheaper than buying at the grocery store? if not, why and could anything change your mind? i feel like for the busy working mothers that are also conscious that this might be a good idea.

Re: buying homemade baby food

  • I personally wouldn't. I think if I was going to do homemade, I'd just make it myself. It really doesn't take much time. We do a mixture of homemade/ fresh food items and pouches.

  • Thanks for the feedback. Getting negative comments for posting on multiple boards. Its just research for a marketing class and i know some board get more traffic than others
  • No. I made my own food (not purées) for DD, and it was really easy.
DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.
  • No. I just blend up whatever we are having for dinner. Why spend money on purees?

I also don't get the whole feeding your kid pouches thing though.

    nope.

I can't understand the market for this. It's not hard to make baby food, and babies can just eat real food that I make for me.

No.  It is really easy to make yourself.
If you are buying it from someone, it is not really homemade…..I have a hard time believing that someone could come up with a business plan where they would sell cheaper than larger companies (usually less than a buck a jar, right?) and actually make money at the same time.    You are better off marketing to really really wealthy women looking for trendy things in the baby market who are willing to pay for the idea/convenience of things rather than their true value.   Like "gourmet baby food delivered directly to your door"  all wrapped up with a pretty bow.

No, I would just make it myself.

I know I already answered but I feel the need to defend! I HATE cooking. Like loathe it. I tried making LOs baby food but it lasted like 2 weeks then i switched to store bought. I felt guilty about it constantly. If a friend or neighbor had've been like "Here I made some baby food and you can have it for $5.00 a tray" or $2 a container or something I would have snapped it up. Maybe I'm crazy but I also wish someone would magically appear with healthy dinners every night that I didn't have to prepare or cook.
Thank you! i posted the question not to be a spammer but as research for a school project. as a working mom and in school i thought it would be a good product idea but there is A LOT of negative comments. Glad to know i wasnt the only one thinking it would be nice to have.
  • Nope.  It took two minutes extra to make my own.

I could see some people liking the idea but it is a very niche market.
  • I wouldn't. I am a working mother and I have a blender and food at home. On Sundays I would just belnd food for the entire week and freeze the majority. It's quick and easy.

  • The only thing I could see buying would be meat purees since I hated making them.  Anything else I would make myself since I EPed and generally used breast milk as a base.

That's the thing. It already exists. What exactly do you think would be different about buying it from a lady on etsy vs a company like earths best?

    C+

  • Earth's Best is still processed.  Open a jar of green beans and compare it to a batch of homemade green bean baby food.  Totally different.

I would imagine it would be a refrigerated or frozen version meaning it would have to be for a small local market.  And the cost of having a commercial grade kitchen to qualify for licensing and permits and whatnot to sell food would make it very hard to be priced competitively.

  • I have had friends who thought it would be the best idea ever to do this and sell it at a Farmers Market.  Then they looked into the actual process (and thus costs) involved.  Dream ended.

I would but only if it included delivery! to me, that's the convenience. Also, reissuing glass jars or containers. Like I leave the used containers, they get washed and then new food goes inside.

No, I make my own on Sunday mornings.  So easy and so cheap, can't see why I would ever have to pay someone else to do it.

    .

Not being snarky. Really. What is the chemical difference if the ingredient list says "apples" and maybe some ascorbic acid to prevent browning?
Yes, would I prefer to eat fresh food rather than canned or jarred? Absolutely but I don't see how a woman would be able to sell it commercially any different than a larger company.
OP said it would be geared toward "concious" moms. (Ignore the fact that I hope all alive moms are concious) I am assuming she meant "healthier." My point was "healthier" not made in your home baby food already exists.

I was referring to smell, taste.  Those alone were reasons I made my own.  I also preferred to control the process, ensuring that I maximize the nutritional value of the food.

By process I mean how it was cooked and preserved.  Some cooking and preserving methods can cook away (for lack of a better term) the nutrients more than other methods.

I have nothing against Earth's Best and if I didn't make my own, that's one of the ones I would use.  I am fairly certain we are actually agreeing with each other.

    @marla

Yes we agree that the OP's idea is not well thought out.

It just drives me batty when people claim jarred baby food is "totally different" than homemade when in reality it is not. It unnecessarily makes moms who use it feel "less than."

And this is coming from a mom who DID make all her baby food. (Well at least for number one, number two got the short end of the stick.)
  • As a side note, I make my own baby food, but I did buy Earths Best from time to time until I found a piece of paper inside the jar. Disgusting!

Now THIS is a good reason to want to make everything yourself!
  • I meant taste. It does taste different.
