Did your DH/SO have a say in when you weaned?

edited June 2014 in Breastfeeding
I only ask because I've heard mixed reasons on why a mother chooses to wean. I've heard them all from pressure from spouse, pumping being too difficult, down to the child self weaned.

  • I'll answer for when I weaned DS at 13m.

DH didn't have a say. I weaned because my maternity leave was over. So my plan was to continue to nurse at bedtime only but then once I started working again, I started coaching, which made it impossible for me to be home for bedtime 2 nights a week (sometimes 3), so I figured it would be best to wean all together.

DH seemed just as sad that it was over as I was. He was always very supportive of BF and still is.

  • I just weaned 2 days ago.  I'm pregnant and just couldn't handle it anymore.  DH has never given input into breastfeeding other than being supportive of it and telling his mom it's good for both me and the baby.
  • I voted 'no'.  With our first DH did not like the idea of me BFing beyond 1.  Then I pointed out that I was BF until I was 18 months and turned out fine, I also made him read all the benefits that extend beyond the first year for both mother and baby and he backed down.  Now he doesn't care though.

Although I will say we agreed with my first that if AF didn't return by the time DD was 18 months I would wean because we wanted to start TTC again, but AF did return at 15 months and I was pregnant by the time DD was 19 months, so it didn't matter.  So I guess yes and no.
  • Haven't weaned, but no. We'll wean when the girls are ready.

I voted no, although I haven't weaned yet. Unless it was somehow affecting the whole family negatively, I would expect the decision to me mine and my sons.

This, just swapping a daughter instead :)

  • My DH was super supportive for the first 2.5 years. In the last year or so, he has made it known that he thinks that my son should be weaned but he was never insistent and was supportive against any outside comments. now that my DS is 99% weaned my DH is very, very happy.

  • I also haven't weaned and said no.  DH hasn't really done much research about extended breastfeeding (as far as I know), and is really just going with whatever I decide at the moment.

  • My LO is 10 months and I don't plan on weaning anytime soon. I voted, no. My H is very supportive of me breastfeeding and we had discussed going a year when I was pregnant. After my LO turned 6 months I started expressing a desire to extend breastfeed and now my goal is two years. My partner knows this and he is supportive but even if he was iffy about it I don't think it would change my mind.

  • DS turned 1 last week. MH occasionally asks out of curiosity when I am going to wean but he doesn't pressure me one way or another.
