Thank you
@livelaughlove88 for letting everyone know right away and thank you everyone for your well wishes!
Here's the story:
At about 3:30am Monday morning, at 34 weeks, my dog woke me up being annoying. He refused to settle down so I got up to take him out. As soon as I sat up, I felt something sort of pop and leak out of me. I was half asleep so I figured it was pee or discharge...until I stood up and felt it running down my leg. I remembered advice from our childbirth class and tried to stop it. No luck. At that point I knew what was happening even though I didn't want to be right.
I called my husband who was still at work and told him I thought my water had broken and that he needed to come home. I called my dr, then the hospital, and took a shower. DH got home and we headed to the hospital.
This is where it gets a little fuzzy. I remember them telling me my water had definitely broken and that since he was breech they needed to do a c/s. I remember having a couple meltdowns while we waited for the dr to come. I remember crying, "I'm not ready for this!" and "I want to go home!"
They gave DH scrubs and took me to the OR. It was smaller than I expected. They gave me a spinal which sucked. When it kicked in it was so weird, but not in a bad way. They actually started before they let DH in. He came in right before they delivered the baby. His feet came out, then his butt, then my OB had to push his head like crazy to get it out of my ribs. Then he was born! I heard him cry and they took him right to the side table for cleaning/assessing. A couple minutes later they wrapped him up and held him by my head for about 5 seconds. Then they took him to the NICU and I told DH to go with him. He was born at 8:30am, 4lbs3oz, 16".
I spent 2 hours in recovery, then went to my room. They let me try to get up at 8:30pm and it didn't go so well because I got very dizzy and had a panic attack. I tried again at 10pm, did ok, and then I FINALLY got to go see my baby. He looked perfect :-)
He's doing well now considering. He's on a little oxygen to keep his saturation levels up, and on a feeding tube because he's breathing too fast to try to eat normally. He also became jaundiced last night so he's under a bright blue light. They are giving him some electrolytes and sugar through an IV.
He is very slowly improving. If you think of it, send us some good vibes tomorrow. I will be going home from the hospital and obviously he is not, and that's going to be hard. I'm so thankful that he is doing as well as he is and that we can hope to bring him home in 10-14 days.
Sappy part: You guys are awesome. I can't imagine having gone through pregnancy and now this surprise delivery without the support and snark of my July 14 mamas. James and I say thanks :-)
Update 6/17/14: James is off oxygen and got to try a bottle yesterday. I got to feed him for the first time, which was really important to me. He took about half his bottle the first time, and 6 hours later took the whole thing like a champ! I'm hopefully going to be able to try to BF him today. Once he can eat exclusively from a nipple (breast or bottle), maintain his body temp outside the incubator, and pass the "car seat challenge" (spend 90 min in a car seat without having major issues) he will be able to come home. I don't know when that will be but the end is in sight :-)
Re: Baby James is here :-) *Update in OP*
One piece of advice - don't go in for a visit through the front doors of the hospital around maternity discharge time. Normal discharge time at my hospital is 11am and DH dropped me off at the entrance while he parked the car. I was frozen in the corner of the lobby, sobbing and staring, as the line of new babies were leaving. Now, if it's around that time, DH drops me off at a side door and I make sure the coast is clear before heading in.
Good luck and fingers crossed for a short nicu stay!!
