Not sure if this one has been asked- how do you correct it if one breast produces waaay more milk then the other?

Feed / pump more on the less producing side, but know this will likely lessen production on the other side as well. It's common I think to have an over producer though!
That is...it will likely affect the supply of the other IF you feed / pump on the less producing side in place of the more producing side...

  • Ok, in side laying breastfeeding position do you let baby lay in his back or roll them on their side? We tried this today and it was so comfortable. Lo is getting heavy! He really seemed to like it but I felt like I was doing it wrong because he was on his back with his head turned. How do you do the second side? Roll completely over and move baby?

I put mine on his side. I love this position for night feedings, but his latch is kind of shallow/bad overall so it's not very efficient.

  • Thanks. I had it in my head that it would be bad for him to nurse flat on his back

I don't think the baby nursing flat on his back is a problem, but the issue with a baby on back during side lying would be that he has to turn his head to get to your breast. This is why they recommend the baby be on its side, with baby's belly facing your belly and baby's head looking straight. I think this helps with their sucking and swallowing.

I put the baby on her side. Then for the other breast I don't move the baby, I move myself a little farther away from the baby and roll so that I'm 3/4 of the way to lying flat on my stomach. That puts my bottom boob underneath me and my top boob against the mattress so that baby can get to it.

  • Does anyone else find they have their first letdown before they feed their baby? I find I get the "pins and needles" sensation and then the leaking starts about every 2-3 hours. Colin is well above his birth weight already, so I don't wake him to feed unless it's been more than 4 hours. But sometimes it will have been 2 hours, he's sleeping away, and it's like my boobs are ready to go - and the milk starts flowing.  Is this normal?

I get the tinglies too. And it kinda stings at times. I only leak if I'm full (so mornings really or if it's been 2-3 hours. But it's minimal. I only wear pads to go out to avoid wet marks.

Maybe the Milkies to catch that BM?

Happens all the time. However I can't answer if it is normal or not.

DS2 will be sleeping or otherwise occupied when I start to leak. Or he'll have finished eating and I'm just holding him and I feel the burning sensation and then I'm dribbling down my tummy.

I feel those same tingles and stings also and it's never when I'm feeding. I don't feel my let down when she's BF.  It's almost like I'm getting the feeling when they are re filling.  I don't leak so not sure exactly what it is that I'm feeling.

I get the tingles also when my boobs are refilling or whatever
  • So I didn't see this question (sorry if its out there) and need some advice. I have EBF my DD and she will be 7 weeks on Monday. I finally want to start somewhat of a stash for when I go to work. I just tried to pump and got barely an ounce out....am I doing it wrong??? She ate about 3 hours ago so I should have more in there right??? Just an FYI...she has gained 3 lbs since being born so I know I have the supply. Thanks for any advice you guys can provide.

Totally fine and normal for a first pump. LO is more effective at getting milk than a pump and it takes your body some time to get used to the pump. Just keep at it and you should see an increase. But if you're feeding LO the same in additipn to pumping it's also likely you'll have less as you're not pumping to replace a feeding.

  • DS is starting to out eat my supply, or at least it seems that way? He is eating between 16-20oz per day, usually needed 2-3 4oz 'formula supplements because I am just totally tapped out. He seems to,get enough from me if he has literally hours to nurse, but, in the middle of the night, for example, he will cry because he just cannot get enough unless he is up every half hour to nurse, and I am too exhausted at night to keep up with nursing every half hour. He is nearly 4 weeks old at this point, so I am not sure what to do! Any hopes of increasing my supply, or will I just have to continue to nurse and supplement?

That's a really good amount for a first try. It takes a few times to get used to the pump and get out more. Just keep trying. But also I never got more than about 1oz when pumping in addition to breastfeeding. I only started getting more when pumping at work to replace a feeding. That would give me 2-5oz depending on time of day.

  • Anyone have a SLEEPY baby when they nurse?

I swear, my kid is constantly sleeping (1 month). No matter how awake he is- boob goes in, eyes shut.

I responded to your thread but now I'm confused. Is baby sleeping or just eyes closed?

DS nurses about 90% of the time eyes closed. When he's dozing he sucks lightly every few minutes. When he's actually asleep he delatches.

I think it's quite common to nurse eyes shut.

He does not unlatch. He actually never unlatches. He can pretty efficiently suck a paci while deep asleep as well. Maybe I'm mistaking eyes shut for sleeping? I guess I never considered he may not actually be asleep.

Mine does this.  I think he might be awake 1 out of 10ish times he nurses throughout the day.  He's only about 2 weeks now though.  He still has plenty of poopy and wet diapers though, so I'm not worried - I think that's probably a good indicator of it LO is actually eating when latched on with eyes closed.  And swallowing...probably a good indication!  I remember DD being like this as well.  I think I just have sleepy kids!

Also (I'm sure this has been asked, but I'm mobile, like usual, and can't search) when I start nursing DD on one side, the other side leaks like crazy, as in a good ounce or so. Luckily I usually have my softshell on, otherwise even with a nursing pad I would be drenched. Anyways, I cringe every time I dump my shell and see all that milk go to waste. What can I do? I'd rather not pump as I'm still dealing with traumatized nipples and I think bf-ing AND pumping would be a set back on my "somewhat" healing I have going. Ideas?
If you leak an ounce I would get a Milkies milk saver and start building a small stash for bottle feeding. It's always nice to have one feed in the fridge as back-up.

My baby nurses like crazy and swallows really fast. So i try to stop and burp him but 99% of the time this ends up with an upset baby and no burp that usually leads to huge spit ups. Any ideas??

Note: he usually nurses for only 6-8 minutes and every 3-4 hours.
  • Maybe it's not the burping trick for LO. Took me like 3 weeks to figure him out.

Tried the over the ahoulder, sitting on my lap. Bouncing. Milkshake lol.

I have king spit up too. He does in the am mostly but it's a good one! I think it just happens though. Mostly.
  • If you are feeding in the middle of the night and LO poops mid-feeding, will you change LOs diaper after the feeding and risk having them wide awake again? I hate putting her back down dirty but don't want to spend an hour rocking her back to sleep when she's passed out from eating.

I am asking myself this very question right now.... I just changed her 20 minutes ago but think she just pooped again while eating. In my case rocking doesn't put her to sleep usually which means I will have to nurse her again and then it is a neverending nursing/poop cycle!

If she poos during the first boob and we think she's done, we'll change her before going on to the second to get her more awake to keep eating. I'd probably change her regardless. I just don't want her sitting in the mess for 3 hours but ours does go back to sleep relatively easily.

DS used to be up 4 times a day but now he's decreasing to about 1-2 tines a day.

It's normal to go up to a week without a poop. Their body needs the bm so there is no waste. As long as baby isn't distressed or loosing weight all is good mama!

Careful though. It will be explosive and a poo-tasrophe as I call them when it happens!
  • My LO poops multiple times per day, at least 6/7 but up to 10 sometimes.
  • At 4 ½ weeks mine is also making several poos per day.
  • My LO is three weeks old, she EBF but we've added some BM bottles for night feedings. Question is did or does anyone else's baby nurse for 30-50 min on ONE boob? She suckles during the time frame but I'm not sure if she's actually getting anything. She sometimes wants to eat anywhere from 45 min-2 hours later. Just worried if she's getting enough :-/

It could be comfort nursing. They aren't really nursing for food at that point, it just feels nice for them, so they slow down their sucking and just hang out on there.

I EP and I'm lucky if I get 10 oz a day. I drink water, eat pretty well, eat oatmeal every day, take 12 fenugreek capsules a day and nothing is helping. I was thinking of talking to my gyn about reglan, any experience with it for lactation? I know depression is a potential side effect, anyone experience that?

Nursing in a carrier...how do you do it?? I have a moby, beco, and that free seven slings thing...and a ring sling. I use my moby most often at this age and the main reason I can't figure it out is I can't lift my shirt from under all the knots! Does one type of carrier work better for nursing or is there a secret I don't know?
