GTKY: Weird Food Habits

What weird stuff do you do with food?

image

Okay, perverts...you know what I mean!

I, for example, microwave my string cheese for EXACTLY 10 seconds before I eat it.

Seriously, try it and get back to me.

And I put garlic salt/powder on EVERYTHING. Eggs, macaroni and cheese, steamed veggies...everything.

  • My sister puts grape jelly on her scrambled eggs. It turns them green.

But honestly, it doesn't taste bad! Just weird to get past.

  • 1. I will not eat left overs, H always has them. Which he doesn't get to leave for lunch so it's easier for him to take them to work anyways.

    2. I will not have a sausage biscuit without mustard on it.

    3. I have to always add a small amount of milk in my macaroni and cheese.

I'm sure I can totally think of more.

  • Wait.....I don't understand how that makes them green...unnerving.

It defies the laws of nature. But it's not terrible tasting. That's the weird part!

I cannot stand when my food touches.  I must have everything completely separate on my plate and depending on the meal may eat off several plates/bowls.  For example green beans must always have their own bowl because any liquid coming off them may not touch the other food on my plate.

  • Cornbread broken up and soaked in glass of milk.  Grosses hubby out every time:)

  • I love tortilla chips with plain sour cream.  However, I won't eat sour cream straight off the spoon.  Go figure.

    This sounds amazing.

  • I will not drink milk or eat anything after the sell by date. I will throw that shiz out so fast.
I will not eat leftovers and neither will H. We waste a ton of food.
I make peanut butter and syrup sandwiches. I toast all my sandwiches, always have, always will and lastly I have to eat my sides completely before I eat the main course.

  • I hate when cold foods and hot foods touch.  I need a separate salad plate at every meal.  Also, bread cannot touch liquids, separate bread plate as well.

Pancakes and waffles have to be dipped into a puddle of maple syrup, it cannot be poured on top.  I will also not eat fake maple syrup, but that's from growing up in the northeast.  I have a tiny bottle of real syrup that I need to start bringing with me to breakfast restaurants.  I'll eat my pancakes with just butter if no real syrup is available.

I would also do the honey for my fast food nuggets, but we didn't have a McDonald's growing up, it was only a Burger King in my town.

  • I make my instant coffee (decaf, these days) twice a day at the exact same time, and I have to pour the hot water the second the kettle clicks off, otherwise I press the button and wait for it to click off again.

I've been known to spread straight miso paste onto bagels or english muffins. Weird, but oddly good.

Oh, here's another. I have to cut up my whole steak before I even take one bite. And I can't eat the fatty part of the steak. Drives my husband crazy!

  • I don't like the fatty part of steak or ham or any other meat either @salsy2012!  It's just disgusting!!

I will buy a bag of Cheetos Puffs and open it and leave it totally open for a day (or if I can resist the urge, 2 days) to get them stale.  I love stale Cheetos.  I'll also eat stale crackers, no bigs.  Stale popcorn?  YUM!!  I'll make a double batch of popcorn at the house and leave the excess out overnight and snack on it the next day.

  • Things should not touch each other on the plate and you should not have more than one thing on a fork...unless you are having one of those KFC bowls. Those bowls are a whole other story.

Syrup cannot be poured until after the pancakes or waffles have been cut.

I hate all kind of fish/seafood, but I love cocktail sauce, so I eat it on pretzels, crackers, or bread.

My fiance won't eat leftover either.. It's so frustrating. We end up wasting so much food because I can't eat up the leftovers fast enough.

I am terrified of food poisoning. (This is actually an OCD obsession of mine). I literally worry every. single. time. I eat something it will give me food poisoning. It's somewhat annoying, and I have wasted (I'm sure) perfectly good food because of it, but at least I have very hygenic cooking habits. I manage it by being very vigilant on temperatures, researching how well food ages, washing my hands about 18 times whenever Im cooking, etc.

  • Ketchup. Lots & lots of ketchup.

  • Lol these are simultaneously gross and entertaining. I must be the least picky person on earth because I'll eat pretty much anything haha, as long as there's no mold. And as far as stuff touching, with big meals like Christmas or thanksgiving I don't mind stacking things, gets everything on the plate at once!

I eat peanut butter on apples sometimes, don't know if that's weird or not..

  • If I'm having some type of long pasta, like spaghetti, I have to cut it up into pieces before I'll eat it.  It's so much easier for me to eat it that way!

One about my H:  he always leaves behind a small amount of anything he eats.  For instance, he could eat a donut hole, but would leave a small part of it behind.  It's not about being too full, it's a behavior he developed from childhood since his mom is a food-pusher.  If he actually cleaned his plate, more would be automatically added to his plate whether he wanted it or not.  He can't break the habit, even now, and it drives me a little nuts! :)

    Yes @salsy2012!  All my life!

    My others...

    1. I dislike the texture of potatoes and won't eat/dislike: most french fries (especially steak-cut), baked potatoes and mashed potatoes.  I like chips, but those are not potato texture per se.

    2. I love cottage cheese with sunflower seeds...I've been craving that a lot lately.

    3. I don't eat eggs...I think it's the consistency, like potatoes.

    4. Shellfish remind me of insects so I won't eat them.
  • I save the marshmallows in my Lucky Charms for last, like a child.

I pick off and eat the pepperoni from the pizza and eat it first.

I will not drink milk that is dated to expire in 3 days.

  • When I make hard shelled tacos at home, I make the taco; Meat, cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, sour cream, hot sauce etc. Then I smash the shit out of it and eat it with a fork. DH always asks me why I have to make the taco first, and it's because then I know exactly how much of each ingredient I need.

I also separate all my skittles and eat them all separately.

I eat the breading off of chicken mc nuggets before the nugget part. Always. Have since I was a kid.
I hate drinking anything that is not ice cold. Unless it's supposed to be hot, then I wait until it is warm to drink it.
Breakfast sausage MUST be dipped in pancake syrup.

Why must cilantro be on everything? It tastes like soap. It has put me off of tacos and pho.

  • Ketchup on everything!  Eggs, potatoes, chips, bread (I ate a lot of ketchup sandwiches in college).
If I have a hot pocket, I eat the flaky crust off of it first.

Cottage cheese has come up a couple times.  I'm curious how it's "supposed" to be eaten.  I mix it with strawberry jelly or eat it spread on peanut butter toast, but I'm not sure if that's weird.

  • I don't like milk but I like wet cereal so I put it on my cereal, then I tip the spoon before each bite so that it drains off. Also, I don't eat meat, but when I occasionally make it for my husband I go to extremes so I don't have to touch it, including wearing plastic baggies on my hands a couple times.

We always ate it like this growing up! And see my post above: I don't like milk, so I ate it with a spoon and drained it the same way I do cereal. Where are you from? I think it's a Southern thing.

I bought a box of latex medical gloves from the pharmacy section of the grocery store and use those whenever I have to touch meat.  I eat meat and I love eating meat, but I can't deal with chicken or ground beef slime getting under my fingernails.  DH thinks it's hilarious, but those gloves are awesome for touching meat.

  • I enjoy putting chips or doritos on top of sandwiches... it's a texture thing.

    Raw tomatoes=gag
Cooked tomatoes=acceptable, as long as they are thoroughly cooked

Tortilla chips topped with pizza sauce and mozzarella cooked for roughly 1 min in the microwave are amazing.

Omg that's digusting. Was he high when he created this?
  • I live by an incredibly important food theory, which I will share with you all now... That if something isn't good with avocado, it is good with chocolate.

Try and find something that isn't true for, I dare you. Also, if you tell me you don't like avocado (or chocolate for that matter), keep it to yourself, I can't handle the horror. My dad is an avocado grower, I grew up on them and will eat them with practically anything.

  • I am also in the food-can't-touch camp. Also, I like to eat each type of food on my plate at the same rate, so I'll take 2-3 bites of each and then move on. I scrape the little food piles apart as they shrink so that they are always equidistant from one another on the plate. When I'm down to the last few bites, I finish each item in order of least preferred to most preferred.

When I eat colored candy (Skittles, M&Ms, chewy Lemonheads, etc) I eat them 2 at a time and they cannot be the same color.
  • Mine usually gets me some side eyed looks from people but I love it. I cook Ramen noodles (beef or chicken, doesn't really matter), drain all the water and just use the packet to flavor the noodles with no broth, then I microwave a hotdog, cut it up and mix it into my noodles. So. Damn. Good. Now I think I'll be having it for lunch today! Lol
