Toddlers: 24 Months+

Why doesn't my toddler just go pee without asking?

My 3 yo ds is potty trained but he always has to ask me and get the ok to just go. And he literally won't go if I do not say "go" and goes in his pants and freaks out crying. Someone pls help understand what goes on his mind? I just want him to go tot the restroom on his own when he needs to.

  • Does he go to preschool or daycare?  My DD started asking permission to go to the bathroom after starting preschool because they have to ask to go there.

  • No, not yet. I wonder what goes in his little head. I feel bad that I can't understand him sometimes =\

  • Is he generally a rule follower?  (Comparatively speaking.)

My daughter (who is something of a rule follower) did the same thing for a really long time.  And still does (at 4yrs) to a certain degree.

I just say "go" and remind her she doesn't need to wait for me to say go, and otherwise don't make any deal out of it.  She'll grow out of it eventually.

In trade, she doesn't eat candy - which is freely available in the house - without asking, and doesn't start making a mess with paints without asking, doesn't go outside without asking, and so on.  It's a trade I'll take. :)

  • Thanks everyone, this helps me out a lot, and I didn't realize this but he is generally a rule follower :)
