Morning snack vs afternoon snack

I just read an article about how important it is for kids to have a healthy snack between meals. I have such a hard time fitting it in. They eat breakfast around 7:30, we are usually out of the house by like 9, gone all morning at play dates or running errands or whatever. We get home right about lunch time, at about noon. Then we have dinner around 5. After reading this article, I feel like I should try to fit in a snack somewhere. Tell me your meal/snack schedule. Thanks!!

Re: Morning snack vs afternoon snack

  • I don't plan snacks.  DD just walks into the kitchen and I can tell she wants something.  So I offer her either a yogurt or a cheese stick or an apple or something...

I don't actually say at any certain time, "come have a snack".

It works for us.  She eats breakfast at 7:30, lunch at 12 and dinner at 5:30.

I don't "schedule" a snack, but this is usually how our day goes...

    Breakfast: 7/7:30am
Snack: 9:30/10am (often on the go)
    Lunch: 11:30am/noon
    Snack: as needed after school
    Dinner: 5/5:30pm

  • I'll admit, I keep goldfish, graham crackers. granola bars in the car for morning snacks.  Dylan has carnation instant breakfast in her milk in the morning so she usually isn't hungry until 10-ish and eats what I have on the go.
  • It depends on the day. On days that we are home in the morning, he tends to sleep in, eat breakfast around 9, lunch around 11:30, with no morning snack. If we are out and about, breakfast is around 8, lunch is between noon and 1, and morning snack is 10/10:30.

  • DD (21 months) has milk and breakfast around 7:30, a snack around 11 (usually 2 crackers and a string cheese), lunch around 2, milk around 4, and dinner around 6:30.
  • depending on the day and what we are doing- Z snacks. She's like me. I'm a grazer. I eat 6 small meals a day. She usually noshes with me.

most days are healthy while other days we splurge and have chocolate teddy grahams or ice cream at snack
  • We have breakfast around 7, lunch between 11 and 12, snack around 3 and dinner around 6. I wasn't as scheduled with it until too much snacking started impacting the girls meals, so we needed to become more structured.

Snacks are usually fruit or veggies, occasionally with hummus. A favorite is apple slices with some cinnamon sprinkled on.

We eat breakfast around 8-8:30. DS usually eats a pretty big breakfast (4 frozen waffles or 4 pieces of toast) so he usually isn't hungry for a morning snack. We eat lunch around 11:30/12. We eat supper around 5:30, so it depends on what time he gets up from his nap. I have found that if he eats a snack after 3:30, he won't eat supper. It kind of depends on his nap, how much he ate at lunch, and if he asks. He does get a bedtime snack around 7:30 which is usually crackers/fruit/yogurt.

However, if we are out shopping in the morning, he will usually munch on pretzels.

    Holy cow, LOL
He just eats the insides, and leaves the crusts. But yeah, that is still a lot. It's his big meal of the day! :)

  • I definitely don't schedule snacks and don't offer unless asked. I always have stuff with me when we go out - I'm amazed your kids don't ask for a snack in the Am. I always have random stuff in my purse or car that is shelf stable - crackers, bars, etc. I usually toss some string cheese, yogurt or fruit in the bag before we head out. Heck, I pack snacks for me, too.
I have always done the above, too.. I still do at 8. I still pack a small container of goldfish or whatever in my purse.

I don't think my kid could go w/o eating from noon-5 at ANY age with no snack. Even I eat a snack in between those hours.  And she gets a morning snack still in second grade.

  • I don't schedule snacks. My kids sleep until 8 or so on weekends and summer. They both prefer to be up a little while before eating so breakfast is usually at 9ish and then lunch at 12. They both eat an afternoon snack and DS usually eats 2...he is hungry and eats something almost every 2 hours. We eat dinner between 6&6:30. Sometimes they eat a snack after that now that they are staying up a little later for summer.

school days are different. This past school year they ate breakfast at 7, lunch at school at 10:30&11, an after school snack, and dinner at 6/6:30. They went to bed at 7/7:30 so no after dinner snack.

Teach me your secrets, oh wise one.
They are older now but they have always slept that late. I just got lucky I guess because I never did anything to make them sleep other than bedtime has always been 8:00 until they started school. Sorry I have no miracle secrets to share. ;)

  • We have two snacks a day.  Generally we have one in the morning.  If we're going somewhere I give them a cup to snack on in the car while we travel.  We also have one when they wake up after nap.  My kids turn into grumps without their snacks.

  • We have no regular snacks. If we go for a long walk to the playground or something, I'll give them Cheerios to munch on in the stroller. If DS is hungry earlier than dinner, I tell him he can have some fruit or yogurt. Sometimes he does and sometimes he finds that he's not actually that hungry if he can't have crackers or some empty carb.

Bfast is anywhere from 7:30-9, lunch anywhere from 12-1:30, and dinner anywhere from 5-6:30/7.
