How would you spell it?

Britain is on our short list of names if #2 is a girl. How would you spell it? My instinct would be BRITAIN so it doesn't constantly get misspelled. H has suggested Britton, or Brittan(which I'm not a fan of - looks like you forgot the y on Brittany), or Britynn.

Thoughts? Alternative spellings?

Re: How would you spell it?

  • I would go with Britynn or Britton.

I agree with JSS1002 about the "like the country?" comments, and would personally avoid spelling it "Britain" for that reason.

What about spelling it with an "i" like "Brittin" or Brittinn"?

  • Britton or Britain. I would also not put a "y" in there.

We have a little girl at our center that spells it: Britynn

  • I think you might get 'like the country' questions no matter how you spell it - it'll just be either yes or no and then you spell it out for them. If you're open to suggestions, maybe Brynn?

I do like Brynn, but am not a huge fan of 1 syllable names (girl or boy) with our last name. My mom has suggested Brynlee, so the nn could be Brynn, but I think it's too close to Braylee to work in our family.

  • Who cares if they say "Like the country?" There are tons of people named after states and cities, even countries. I know a couple very cute India's and Mali's. :)

  • I think Britain like the country is cute. I know a little girl named London.

If it is said like the country. Spell it as such. It will be a lifetime of correcting people if not.
This is not as big a deal as it sounds. DD1's name has an unusual spelling, and while we do have to correct people, it's not all that hard/time-consuming. :)

I correct people a gazillion times a day that it's Julianne, not Julianna. Even though it's clearly spelled Julianne and that's not even uncommon. I think people will pretty much mess up just about any name. I say go with whatever spelling seems right to you. One thing though, regardless of what spelling you choose people are probably going to ask you how it's spelled. If you go with Britain you could just say "like the country" vs having to actually spell it each time.
Haha, assuming that all these morons know how to spell (they probably don't). ;-)

  • "Warner... like Warner Brothers??"...... "Yes." We get it, and his name isn't even hard! PS I like "Britain"... people will know how to spell it and she can say "just like the country" - I feel like no matter what names can be challenging. I have to say "Sarah, with an H" every single time someone asks to spell my name

Britton, unless you want stupid "like the country!?" comments for the rest of all your lives. :-)

We get "Virginia? Like the state?" Yes, like the state. Congratulations, you know your states. Don't let it bother you.
