Toddlers: 24 Months+

Sleeping options on vacation?

Hi everyone,
My son is 2.5, will be 3 in June. We have not transitioned to a toddler bed yet, he has not showed any interest in trying to get out of his crib so we haven't made that change yet. In a few weeks, we are traveling to Florida to stay at a family condo. Has anyone been in a similar situation? I feel like he is too big for a pack and play at this point. I could go buy a portable crib while I'm down there, or I guess just get a rail for the side of one of the beds and see how it goes? Any suggestions would be helpful!

  • We bought the Shrunks inflatable toddler bed for travel when our DD was 18 months because she never slept well in pack n plays. She was still in her crib at home so she thought it was a great adventure and really liked it.  It has 2 raised sides, but my DD scooted off the head and foot of the bed the first couple times  It was no big deal.  She whimpered, we got up and put her back and she went right back to sleep.  It has a velvety base, but you can put a crib sheet on it, we always do so it feels more like her bed.  Inflates super quick and only takes a couple minutes more to deflate and has fit into every hotel room we've taken it to.

We have used a toddler aero bed that has baffles to prevent them from falling off. We have also just put the kids in our bed.
It is really kid and stage dependent so you just have to figure out what will give you the best nights sleep.

You can also rent cribs, high chairs, etc. We rent a full crib every summer when we vacation. DS sleeps much better in a crib than a pack n play. I'm sure you'd have no problems finding a rental company in FL.

  • We are in the same situation my 2.5 yr old had always slept in her crib , she won't even sleep with us in bed. I'm getting the bed rails and having her sleep with me. MH will sleep in the other room with DD2 in the pnp. I'm just gonna hope for the best. Anytime she's been in bed with us she thinks it's playtime. I'm hoping the excitement of vacation plus likely no naps will cause her to zonk right out at bedtime.

  • We also have the Shrunks travel bed but he gets so hyped up on vacation, he won't settle down in it (even though he sleeps just fine in his toddler bed at home). For our next vacation, we're leaving the bed at home and just letting him sleep with us since he always sleeps well there.

  • I've been thinking about this too.  I feel like DD is getting a little big for the pack and play.  We will be in Maine in a condo with my inlaws.  The condo has an extra room with twin beds and DH just wants to put her in there.  I'm not sure about that.  She's in a toddler bed at home but I don't like the idea of having her in a regular bed in a different room.  I'm afraid of her falling out.  We may just end up putting her in our bed.

  • When we were still using crib, we put a mattress on the floor on vacation.  We also put him in a bed with pillows tucked under the sheet to provide a bumper.  By stuffing the pillows under the sheet (rather than just laying on top) the pillows won't fall off if you have a little one that moves around a lot.  Good luck!
  • Ditto the Shrunks toddler air mattress.

DS is still in a crib at home, and we have no plans of moving him to a bed anytime soon.  But he outgrew the PNP before age 2, so he has been sleeping on a air matress away from home since.  We travel regularly, so he is used to it.

DS never stay the whole night on the air mattress.  He falls asleep great, but at some point he always wakes up and climbs into bed with us.  Since he falls right back to sleep, we have no problem with this arrangement.
