Crib, PnP, cosleeper, rock n play- so confused

Okay. Hopefully the baby will sleep at night. The question is in what and for how long. I have a one bedroom apartment so space is an issue. I like the arms reach cosleeper because then baby can be right next to me and I don't have to get out of bed to comfort my baby.

However, I know pack n plays and rock n plays are very popular for sleeping infants. Do I get all four sleeping devices? What are you all doing?

  • We don't have Rock n' Plays in Canada, but I am getting a Pack n' Play and I'm looking at one that has a removable bassinet that I could put beside the bed if I wanted to because my plan is to keep the Pack n' Play on the main floor and our bedroom is on the second floor. I think it really really depends on the baby because everyone I've spoken to has said their baby slept somewhere different. Babies are so hard to plan for!

  • We're planning on a crib for babies room and a pack-n-play with bassinet insert for our room. We have a townhouse and the nursery is only steps away from our room, but I know I'm going to want baby in our room with us for the first few months at night. Baby can nap in the crib during the day.

  • I used the arms reach co sleeper with DD and I'm planning on using it again with this LO. I loved it so easy to comfort baby at night. I have a rock and play but only use it for naps when baby is a newborn and will be upstairs while my DD plays. I used a pack and play too but not to sleep only to play

We have the Arm's Reach and loved it with the other two.

Do you have to attach it to your bed or is it okay to just set it right next to the bed?

We had an arms reach type thing that we used in the bedroom at first, but DS hated it and didn't sleep well in it. We will probably try it again. Then a pack and play in the living room for diaper changes and naps.

    Edit: posted too soon

  • I put a pack and play and rock and play on our registry since I have no idea what will work for us... I'm not doing the cosleeper because I can just see our cats climbing into that and causing all sorts of problems! It does look nice though.

  • Think of it this way: a device for baby to sleep in at night when first born (co sleeper, RNP, pnp/crib), then decide on a device for when baby is a bit older. Do you want to cosleep permanently? Or do you want baby to have it's own bed? I don't know that people use pnp's instead of a crib. Pnp's are helpful for people that have two story homes. We had a small two bedroom when DS was born and while someone gave us a mobile pnp it was never used. We used the RNP in our room, then the RNP in his room, then the crib. We knew we didn't want DS in our room forever. Babies can be noisy sleepers once they start moving around. We did briefly use the pnp in our room when transitioning from RNP to crib but DS would bang his legs and roll around and the noise drove me nuts. He was in his own room at about 4 months old. The pnp is helpful when we travel, since it's smaller than a regular pnp. Babies can't sleep in a RNP permanently, since they grow out of it. We moved DS out of the RNP late, at 7.5 months. We never considered a co sleeper. I wasn't going to be BF'ing so I was going to have to get out of bed, or DH would if it was his turn. It made no sense for us.

So, point is, decide where baby might be sleeping at around 6 months. Do you want to co sleep for good? If not, then do a co sleeper and a crib for another spot in your room. Or a RNP and a crib. I doubt you need a pnp in addition. I hope you're considering a bigger place in the near future-I was naive and thought our 900 sq ft two bedroom was enough. I learned quickly that toys take up space. Exersaucer. High chair. It's bigger than small space is good for even when getting space saving items.

  • With DD, we co slept or had her in a bassinet until about three or four months, and she moved to her crib. Plan is the same with this one but we may get an Arms Reach!

I co-sleep with my babies also, but I suggest having either a pnp or a crib-they learn to roll FAST and you need a safe place to put baby down for naps. I had a 3 mo roll off the bed-thankfully into a basket of clean laundry! I had turned my back for a second to hang up something (he's now a healthy hs senior who just had prom yesterday!)

We used the PNP as a bassinet for the first few months in our room. We also had a RNP. The RNP is super portable, folds in half and was great for our DS since he had reflux. We used it in the beginning for naps and those fussy nights in the beginning. At about 4 months, DS moved out of our room and into the crib in his nursery. But we still used the PNP because we travel a lot.

Since you're in a 1 bedroom, I would probably go right to a crib in your room since it sounds like there is no need for the others, unless you need the PNP to travel. A RNP might be nice to have though since it doesn't take up much space.

  • We have an arms reach Cosleeper, a PNP and a crib, but we live in a 2 story house. We just pushed the Cosleeper up to the bed. I love that thing so much. We had the PNP in the living room down stairs for diaper changes and naps and the crib in baby's room, but we didn't use it until 5ish months. I think in your case you could get away with two if the above. Like, a Cosleeper and a PNP, or RNP and crib, whatever you want to do.

  • I am planning a PNP for downstairs and a crib for upstairs.  We're undecided on if we're going to have baby in our room - if so, we'll just buy a bassinet.

  • Would love to have a bassinet but reastically it won't be used for very long so it's no really worth it. We used a pack n play right next to our bed until about 6 weeks then the dr said since you aren't sleeping and you are watching the baby sleep at night then he needs to be in his room in his own crib. So at 6 weeks out son was in his bed in his own room (right next to ours) with an Angelcare monitor. I felt very comforted with him being in there only because if the monitor really. The monitor will sound an alarm if the heartrate slows down so much and if breathing is stopped for 10 seconds-I think that's right.
  • My son slept in his pnp for shout 6 months and then we transitioned into the crib. However, there were times when the only way he would sleep at night would be in the swing right next to my bed.

  • We had a bassinet until she started moving a lot while sleeping (around 3 months) and them we used the PnP (we bought the mattress for it) until she was 6 months old. At that time we switched her to her own room and into her crib :)
  • I have almost never used my pack and play (only when traveling). Both my boys were in their cribs in the first two weeks. Since you are in such a small place, I would recommend just getting a crib to put in your room.

I never had any desire to co-sleep and my boys were in rooms right next to mine so I never even considered getting a co-sleeper. We got a rock and play from a friend when DS2 was about 5 months and loved it! We plan on using it from the beginning when napping or hanging in the living room.

I was planning on just a crib.  Our room is large enough (and we have little enough furniture) that the crib will fit in our room until lo is ready for his/her own room.  The nursery will be in the room right next to ours, so it won't be much trouble to move it over.

I hadn't thought, though, about what to do if I want to put the baby down while we're downstairs.  Hmmm...maybe I do need more than just the crib.
  • For those who have the Arms Reach, how easy is it for you to get in and out of bed with it (like to go to the bathroom)? Do you have to push it away?
  • I coslept with ds but he still climbs in my bed so im getting an arms reach. Im going to probably use a pnp for my room and a rnp for the living room. Thats what i did before though ds hated the pnp and crib. New one will probably be in my room till he/she moves into a toddler bed (2ish ?)

I did not have to move it at all, but I moved my night stand out of the way and put it more by the head of the bed so that I could easily get up.

  • We had DS sleep in our room in the bassinet of our Pack n Play for the first month, then moved him to the crib in the nursery.

For this one, we will use the Pack n Play in our room for as long as we can, since we don't have a 3rd bedroom to turn into a nursery. I also bought a Summer Infant By Your Side Sleeper. I figured with a toddler, I will want a place for the baby to lay/nap that is portable. I considered the Rock n Play, but I was concerned DS might bump into it and knock it over. I figured I could have the baby on the floor in this while I am playing with DS.
