Sometimes the baby will cry so hard that she gets red in the face and her tongue sounds like it's rattling and it's just uncontrollable. Not the boob, not being picked up, not being shhhhh'd, not a pacifier (we don't use an actual pacifier but our pinky). For example, we tried to take her out in the stroller yesterday night when she was calm, we walked up the road and it started. We took her out and held her and when we got home she didn't even want to nurse. I am reluctant to take her out in public if I can't seem to control my own baby! This doesn't happen all the time but it does happen from time to time
@kinipela7, that happened to C sometimes. We found a song that would almost instantly calmed her down and made sure we had copies in each car and easily findable on each laptop. I can still sing it from memory! Sometimes they just get worked up and it's super sad. I also found that it tended to happen after a day with a lot of stimulation, be it from people or things like wind, noise, etc. They have a hard time processing all that input. I also found that just putting C down sometimes would work, she wanted that time with little to no input, even from us.
Does anyone else's kid grab on to the nipple and then shake their head back and forth? It's crazy and damn it hurts!! She will also bite down and then lean back while she's stretching. At that point I just stick my finger in her mouth and unlatch her. She's usually asleep by this point

@LKHoffa I have the same issue and read somewhere that it is common for the initial latch to hurt but it also said to count to 10 and if it still hurts unlatch and start again. I really hope this goes away once the nipples toughen up.
@ChristineBaker23 He did it twice yesterday, but that's it. I don't remember him being super upset before we started.
If it was only those two times I wouldn't worry too much. If he starts doing it every feeding though then I would definitely say something is up. My daughter practically drowned herself nursing yesterday when she hurled out EVERYTHING she had just eaten. Sometimes they just spit up. Other suggestions if this seems to be happening frequently would be to burp during the feeding, maybe take him off after let down to catch his breath (sometimes my let down makes baby choke a little) keep him in the position he was nursing in for a few minutes to let things settle before you burp him. I am no professional but these are things that work for us! Hope it helps
Ahhh I was drying baby off after his bath and moved my hand from his chest. Little man's head bobbed straight down toward his knees. Will I ever get used to how fragile he is? I felt like such a horrible mom I called the advice line to check for signs of neck injury! Hoping he's fine we just finished a feeding so that's good. Anyone else feel like their LO has a bobble head?
@LKHoffa I've noticed if LO doesn't have a big wide mouth at latch it smarts a lot for a few seconds. It's like he gets my nip and then sucks the rest of the way in. If I'm patient and wait to let him latch until his mouth is wide open it helps a lot
Wss. This will subside as well once LO really gets the hang of it. Wait for a nice wide mouth. Put the breast to baby, not the other way around. Slide the breast in if you feel it's not enough and don't want to break the latch.

He is fine I'm sure! They are all cartridge right now for a reason, so we don't break them! both babies of mine have bobbled all over the place, actually dropped the first one (less than a 6 inch fall so don't freak out guys). They're tough so don't stress too much!
LKHoffa - If the pain goes away quickly it's most likely just initial "nipples getting used to this" pain that will go away in a few days. The only time you want to worry is if the pain persists throughout the nursing session (usually meaning you've got a bad latch).
JmeJoLee83 - They are a lot tougher than they look!!
How long does it take for nipples to "toughen up"? They still hurt, my left one way more than the right. Also my entire left boob is sore. I don't think it's mastitis because it isn't hot, red, and I'm not ill. It's just really sore and I dread when it's time to eat from that side

Does anyone have to let baby fall asleep on their chest before transferring to bassinet? I'm always walking away on eggshells to keep him asleep. Can this cause a habit over time (spoil) with LO or is it ok/normal for a few weeks?

It can definitely become a habit within a few days... The best advice I can give from experience, is don't let them get into a habit that you don't want to keep. And don't be too quiet while they nap. Let them get used to being asleep while you do your everyday chores and what not they'll get used to the sounds and won't get woken up every time they hear a sound.

I always had to with my DD. She was/is an awful sleeper. Some babies just are. I never viewed it as she was spoiled, it's just what she needed. All babies are different. Honestly, I don't believe you can spoil a newborn.
Anyone else have a paci lover baby? My lo loooooves his pacifier, which is totally fine and adorable, but sometimes when he nurses once he's finished I turn into a pacifier. So my 20-30 m feedings are sometimes 40+m. Sometimes it's hard to tell if he's nursing or soothe sucking and I want to pull away and give him a pacifier but not if he's still eating?

Thats how my right side started out, it was so painful I cried and got tensed up, which stops the flow, so went to see my lc. About 3 days later it turns out I do have mastitis on that side. Is there a tear or a scab? Thats where the infection enters the breast. Go see an lc before it gets worse, trust me it sucks. But in the meantime, use lanolin like crazy and ice packs right after you finish and warn compresses right before you start. Lansinoh sells a 3 in 1 breast therapy pack that i got on amazon for $13.
@izzetoot it's cracked pretty bad but no scab. I've been using the lanolin and the calendula cream the LC recommended. The soreness comes and goes so I wonder if I have a clogged duct? I stood in a hot shower past night with wash clothes over my boobs so the kept the heat constant. That seemed to help. I also feel like I get this pulling sensation when she nurses on that side. My right side is no problem... It hurts when she latches on for about 5 seconds, then it's fine. The left is tender the whole time. I wouldn't say out right painful, but definitely no concern that I'm going to fall asleep while she's nursing that side

If it's just normal nipple soreness, should go away within a week or two (and only be sore right at the start of a session). If it doesn't, I'd get baby's latch looked at. Rubbing breast milk on your nipples and letting them air dry helps a lot. If your whole breast feels painful, could be a clogged duct - do you feel any hard spots?
I don't think you can ever spoil a baby I wear my babies for most of their naps and I think my oldest two turned out pretty well! Right now we are in the "4th trimester" - baby needs that touch!!
And on the comfort nursing…I think it helps to remember that a pacifier is a replacement for a breast, not the other way around. In other words, newborns are supposed to comfort suck - it helps build a good supply and is, well, comforting! If you feel like you just really need a break, take one for sure, but otherwise, all that time at the breast is good for baby - and it really won't last forever.
My kid hates sleeping on her back. She sleeps on her side in the swing or on my chest. As soon as I put her on her back in the crib she wakes up and cries until I pick her up (I've not let it go more than 5 minutes). Any suggestions? I was hoping to start transitioning her to the crib for naps so we can get her in there at nights by two months.

@jshrop, take the crib sheet off and sleep on it tonight. It will make it smell like you so the crib doesn't seem so big and empty. We also added a night light as he didn't seem to like it totally dark. I did that and last night he spent all night in his crib without a problem. Also, try keeping her upright for 15 minutes after feeding before you lay her down, it may be a touch of reflux and being on her back too soon after eating could make her uncomfortable.
@jshrop That sounds exactly how mine started out. My LC said to stop nursing on that side for 2-3 days but to pump instead. She told me to feed only on the good side, pump the other side every time, and bottle feed him the pumped milk in between. So he got the bottle about 4 times a day. It was also a special bottle called a Medela Calma that makes them work really hard to get the milk so he wouldn't get nipple confusion (he was only 2wks at the time) So I did that for 3 days and the crack healed right up and now I can nurse again on both. I also put polysporin on the crack 3 times a day. If you do get mastitis you'll know bc you'll feel like you have the flu and a temp of 101+. Its better to have a scab than an open wound bc thats how it gets in the boob. Get yourself healed before it gets worse!! Good luck and hang in there!
@elsa1688 I did if she unlatched or about every 20 min in the beginning. Once my supply regulated I did one side per feeding. That was maybe around 6-8 weeks old? It feels like forever ago I can hardly remember!

I have no idea if this is credible or not but I heard drinking pineapple juice can help with a clogged duct? Anyone have any input on that? make sure it is actual pineapple juice and not from concentrate. I planned on picking some up this week incase I would run into that situation.
Think I can put fresh pineapple in a blender? I don't have a juicer lol.... And I don't want to put it in my vajayjay
