telling an OLDER child

So my husband had his son VERY young. We are currently 31 years old and i am 5 1/2 weeks pregnant. His son is 15. My husband insists on telling his son first (so I want to wait till risk of miscarriage lowers) which is I guess OK. But I'm actually more concerned with how his son will take the news. Its an odd situation that a child is even cognizant of parent plans to have a baby and when its been brought up in the past (usually by others asking us when we're planning on a baby) his son rolls his eyes and looks at me like, I dunno... Has anyone been in this situation before? How did you handle it? What was the outcome?

Re: telling an OLDER child

  • My husband had two boys well before we were married.  When we were pregnant for our first, they were 15 and 13.  I was worried about it, too.  I was worried they'd be like "we're getting replaced…".   But they took it very well and were very excited.  My daughter is now 5, and they are 21 and 19 and they ADORE each other.  Hope it works out well for your family, too.

  • My SD has been the only child and a spoiled princess her whole life! I was very nervous how she would handle it back when we were just talking about trying to get pregnant! But a few months ago, her mom announced that she was pregnant and having a baby. SD has been crazy excited and over the moon about the baby. She'd always said she didn't ever want siblings, but when it happened, she was ecstatic!
So hopefully your SS will come around and be just as happy. Sometimes the thought might not seem so great but the reality is that being an older sibling is fun! Plus, he's had his time being his dads only child, now he'll get the benefits of having siblings as teens/adults and that, I think, is priceless! Also, with that big of an age gap they won't be fighting over toys and normal sibling rivalry stuff since their interests will be so different. (These are all the things I've been reassuring SD with when she has questions about what it will be like when her moms baby comes!)
