Bah - a whole line of issues..

Just came home from baby girl's 9 month appt. Such a pleasure as always..

Failed her hearing test again. She can obviously hear but they think fluid may be contributing to failing. So we'll have to have a formal test done at the ENT's. Thankfully we love our ENT and he's aware so I'm keeping my fingers crossed she passes that one. Otherwise, may have to consider the tubes.

Also, her hemoglobin levels were low-ish. 10.6 and they want it to be over 11. So now she'll be taking vitamin with iron.

And she wants her to have some PT. She says she's doing great with fine motor skills, and she's sitting great but when she stands she sticks her butt out (i thought all babies do that). So she wants us to have a couple of sessions to learn exercises to do at home so she can stand straight.

Aaaand finally she's a snotty mess and she thinks it's allergies so we're putting her on Claritin.

bah humbag. Anyone else experience similar things? Tell me we're not the only ones...

Re: Bah - a whole line of issues..

  • I can help with fluid/ hearing loss. DS has had fluid in his ears since January. He has had more ear infections than I can count and we finally were given the ok from the pediatrician to get tubes. Our ENT is also great and he recommended tubes. DS failed all aspects of the hearing test. We just got the tubes on Tuesday and the ENT said he had a ton of fluid in his ears. It's only been a few days, but he is even happier than before, sleeps a little better, and he isn't as stuffy anymore. We don't get a follow up hearing test until the end of the month, but I am certain he hears better. Please let me know if you have any questions. I am a little all over the board with this post.

  • happybride 276 - that does help. Was the tube procedure hard? Did they have to use anesthesia? Zo's had 2 ear infections since she turned 6 months and it seems that she constantly has a bit of fluid in her ears so I'm thinking that's the path we're going down as well. So encouraging though that he's already calmer and happier!
  • It wasn't hard. It took less than 15 minutes. They do get anesthesia (via a mask, not iv). The requirements are 4 ear infections within a year. The thing about fluid is that it's not necessarily bad. After an ear infection is treated it takes 4-6 weeks for the fluid to drain. He was already a great baby. Just a terrible sleeper, so I don't think we saw the difference that most people see. I have never heard of someone beingg upset about getting tubes. There have only been good stories.

  • If she ends up needing tubes, try not to worry! DD always had fluid, constant eat infections almost since birth and she just wasn't getting over them. Tubes were wonderful. She got her tongue and lip tie clipped at the same time and all of that took maybe 15 minutes and the whole time from when we stepped into the hospital until we left was just over an hour. She had a really hard day and a tough weekend but was back to her happy self on Monday. We fit the procedure done a month ago.

Like @happybride 276‌ we've had such a positive experience but DD was already a really easy baby and she was even STTN already. She would get easily frustrated and fussy though and that hasn't happened much anymore. She was very snotty and always congested, it helped a ton with that, and she wasn't really babbling at all. After about a week she started really making noise and it seemed like it was the first time she really heard herself. She babbles non stop now!

We didn't have a hearing test because her tubes were because of all the infections but it's pretty clear to us that she hears better. As for the rest, I'm also surprised that they want to start TP because she sticks net butt out, I thought that was common at this age? Getting the exercises won't hurt though. I'm sorry she has to take meds for iron and allergies but hopefully they help out. Let us know how everything goes, good luck!

Like PP, DS had tubes because of constant fluid on his ears. It took less than 15 minutes. The recovery nurse said he didn't even cry at. All. He was in such a good mood I took him to the park and went out to lunch. He can definitely hear better.

DS gets PT. My guess is your pedi thinks her trunk is weak and that's why she is sticking out her butt when she stands. The PT  just plays with DS so they can watch him move then show me some ways to help him move better. I have also been given exercises and stretches to do with him. DS thinks it is fun :)

He is also anemic and has to take iron.

And.... At our 9 month this week the dr said we need to go to an allergist. The appt is at the end of the month.

    You are not alone.

  • I have no advice, just want to say that you and baby girl are in my thoughts! I hope things are on the upswing from here on out.
  • AlejandraN2, I know it was a hard appointment. You have seen baby zo go through so much already. When is she going to get cut a break.?. You keep thinking you have made it over the bend and then. no. I just want you to know I'm there, right with you. She's a sweetie and a fighter and so are you. You got this. Tubes, a little PT, some iron, it's not too bad you'll get it all taken care of. ::hugs::
  • Aw thanks you guys. It definitely helps knowing that if we do need the tubes that it's a pretty easy and common procedure. And thank you for all the thoughts too!
    @salemkitty13 - big virtual hug!
  • Poor zo!! Hope she passes the test @AlejandraN2‌ and that all goes well with pt and they can help her with the standing issue.
