Who is going to try this?

So I understand having a home birth with the help of a midwife...but doing it all by yourself, on purpose, seems nuts! And then add the outdoor part...it better be a really nice day.

  • That would scare me waaay too much. I would not want to attempt an unassisted birth, even with good prenatal monitoring suggesting a healthy baby. Just too many things that could go wrong...and no one there with the expertise and tools to fix it. :(

  • I think that has the potential to be dangerous. Now, I'm all for doing what's best for you and your family, but how do you in the midst of labor determine that you are in trouble?

    Yeah but... It's a reality show. :-/

So it seems very likely that she wasn't really "alone" but the midwives/doctors were waiting "backstage" to check on the pair when the cameras were turned away. :P

  • But the show was inspired by a women who really did give birth by herself in the woods and posted it to YouTube! So people do really do it...crazy!

  • Definitely not for me!

  • I try not to judge other women's birthing choices and think women should get to choose the birth they want, med free, all the drugs, anywhere in between. But I draw the line at planned unassisted, I judge the shit out of that!

  • I think we need to remind ourselves that millions of people all over the world have babies all on their own without any kind of medical help.

We're lucky that we get the kind of medical support and involvement that we do in Westernized cultures.

Though...not saying I would EVER do it on my own, but much of the world does

  • NOPE.

That being said, I'm looking forward to my epidural very much. I admire those who go med-free, but I ain't that girl.

  • I made the mistake if watching the original you tube video... I think I'm scarred for life now. Is it bad that I'm pretty sure that was the first birth video I've see? Lol I have to do THAT in 4 months? I should make a clicky poll about if I should show that video to my husband!

This is actually not true, in countries where there aren't doctors available women will have other women at their births to help. Not just simply deliver alone because they don't have a doctor.

  • AHAHAHA! I'm enjoying the responses!!! I wouldn't do this either, but I certainly don't judge this lady for doing so. I would totally have a home birth with midwife present, but I wouldn't want to do it completely alone. I watched the YouTube video a year or so ago, my sister had sent it to me and I clicked, not knowing what it was.

And now I have The Song That Never Ends stuck in my head...

You're welcome everyone else who now does too.
  • I won't do that for sure.

It is remarkable at the length of which reality tv would go to.

I meant on their own, not alone, but without medical involvement. Yes, many times there are other women there to help.
