toys

when do babies actually start using toys?  right now it seems like DS just wants to wiggle..He seems fascinated by the light though. If  there is a window behind me, that's all he looks at...I'm looking into light up toys maybe? something different to look at than just a window?

Re: toys

  • Looking out a window is incredibly stimulating. All the lines, colours, shapes and movement. Also not to mention discovering the world around them!

Even talking to baby and making eye contact is "play" or "work". Sometimes I prop a book up when they are laying on their back or belly for him to look at. He loves it.

I do have a mobile, he kinda looks at it, but he just started focusing and making eye contact. Once he can track I expect he will watch it more.

  • I was also wondering this! I know newborns don't really stay awake for more than an hour at a time, but I was thinking I have a great play mat/tummy time mat that I can't wait to pull out for him to at least have something to do (hanging out with me all day cannot be that exciting).

  • I pulled the playmat out this week (dd will be 4 weeks tomorrow) and it is a hit. It's the fisher price luv u zoo one. Lights, toys and music. We tried tummy a bit but then let her on her back.

We took out a mat yesterday for the first time.. It's one where you lay them on their backs, and there are toys dangling and a piano at his feet that he can kick. He seemed to enjoy it, he was kicking the piano and kept hitting one of the toys. He'll be 3 weeks tomorrow.

I have a question, is it okay to have toys in the crib? The ones that are strapped to the side of the crib?

@jsaffer01‌ I never put anything in the crib other than a lovee when my son was older. Wanted LO to have the idea that the crib is for sleeping.
I agree that the playmat was the 1st toy my son actually enjoyed! That thing was worth its weight in gold!

  • Playmat is the closest we've gotten to toys. Honestly we don't even bring out the playmat more than once a day.

Everything is new to a baby- they don't get bored.

  • We've done tummy time on the play mat once so far. She hasn't been awake for a long enough stretch after nursing to do it again yet. Other than that, she's fascinated by the things that hang off the bouncer right now and just discovered the mobile on her swing yesterday. I've read her a board book a couple of times, too, and that's about it. She's 2 weeks old.

  • I have the kick and play piano mat at my LO is actually starting to enjoy it. He is 2 weeks and started to grab for the toys and kick the piano and seems to be listening to the music is makes. I also out him on his tummy for a little bit each day on the mat. I have also been reading to him and playing with rattles. He is still very young but appears to be listening and responding to some activities.
