Birthday cake or birthday donuts?

There's this really awesome donut place in town and H and I LOVE donuts. They have all kinds of amazing flavors and they are fancy specialty donuts. We were thinking about getting donuts instead of cake for N's birthday party. But I know it's so traditional to have a cake. What do you guys think?

    4:00.  We're also providing barbecue.  (Of the slow-cooked pork over a long time period served with a vinegar-based barbecue sauce variety and some brunswick stew as a yummy side).

    I think guest would like donuts but I would want LO to smash a cake. Just because I can't imagine a doughnut being near messy enough.

    I voted only cake because cake is the best and I'd be disappointed if there wasn't any cake for guests. :). But really, do what will be fun and fitting for your family!

    Donuts and a smash/mini cake. We're having a mini cake for DD and then three varieties of cupcakes.

    I love the donuts idea, and I think adults will, too! As for LO, either is fine.
