Returning to work

I don't return to work until September but I'm starting to think about what to do about breastfeeding now. My LO is EBF and we both really enjoy it, I feel lucky that we really haven't had any obstacles and it was a smooth ride. I really would love to continue to breastfeed her past a year but here is my dilemma.
I work in a nursing home where there is no where to pump so I would have to pump in my car on my lunch break I suppose.
My schedule changes ex. I work 4 days 7-3, 2 off then work 4 evenings 3-11pm. So it's not like I could always be home for that bedtime time feeding or morning feeding. I have been building a freezer stash so when she starts whole milk I can transition her slowly. She currently doesn't nurse between 7pm- 5am and then she nurses every 3 hours during the day. She has no issues taking a bottle either. I'm wondering if I should just wean her by the time I have to return to work, but I have no clue how I would go about that? Any suggestions on either continuing to breastfeed as well as weaning are welcome with open arms as I feel torn about what to do ...

Re: Returning to work

  • I returned to work in January. I pumped twice a day and most days I got enough milk to cover the next day. I used freezer milk if I had a slow pump day or if he had a growth spurt and was eating more. I ran out of freezer milk the last week of school. I travel from school to school so most days I pumped in my car in random locations. It wasn't too bad, I bumped or listened to audiobooks. Then I just carried the milk in wherever I went in an insulated lunch bag. I don't have any opinions about weaning or not. It's a hard decision and I'm sure you will do what fits best for family. Good luck!

I think they have to allow you the time/space to pump. .. I'm not for sure though. Could you use a closet or borrow an office a couple of time per day? Not ideal but if you want to try to keep pumping. Or breastfeed when you're with your LO and feed formula when your not, but that would be hard going back and forth with your schedule. IDK good luck trying to figure it out!
  • Thanks for your input ladies. I'm not sure about the laws i will have to double check on that, yes I am in Canada. It is hard with shift work because there won't be a constant for her and I. I guess I will see closer to how many feedings she is still doing and try to get her down to twice a day. I'm not too concerned with pumping and storing breastmilk because she will be able to have cows milk at that point. It would be more just to get some relief and not have my supply completely tank. Maybe she will wean herself by then, wishful thinking ;) thanks again for your input, it gives me some things to think about and look into :)
