  • People who complain about the cost of daycare or a babysitter should remember that this is the person you are trusting your child to. She's not supposed to come cheap. If you can't afford to pay it or don't want to, then don't. But don't try to get your $10 an hour sitter to accept $8.

I'm not even sure how a person gets it. But someone on my newsfeed keeps re-posting stuff she had put up 2 and 3 years ago, and it comes across with the "Timehop" banner.

ETA: Found the app description: "Timehop uses the content you posted on Facebook (and Twitter, Instagram, Flickr, and Foursquare) to show what you were doing on this day in history. Remember together with friends and share the best posts! It's a daily nostalgia kick that will quickly become the highlight of your day."

    I still say it's dumb.

I have the app on my phone and really like it. I've never shared the pics on Facebook though.

  • I think 99% of the time when someone says they got pregnant because "the condom broke" they're full of shit.
I feel like this is directed at me, although I'm still in the 2WW. For a year and a half we have had no problems using condoms. They aren't expired. But we were going at it really hot and heavy. We didn't know it had broke until we were done.
I actually didn't know that about you! Did you mention it here? This was a discussion I had with two friends while we were stuck in traffic on the weekend. haha

I've never had a condom break. But I totally believe it can. But I also agree with BME that a lot of people claim that when it's BS.
My brother claimed this and here we are a year later with my niece. He's been a big liar since day one. He wasn't using protection and she wasn't on b/c. I guarantee it. He just said that to save face since they had been dating 1 month when she got pregnant.

This, exactly. I love seeing what I posted years ago - it cracks me up. You don't have to link it to your FB so the whole world sees that every day, though. Mine is not linked.

  • DH and I are doing a kidney walk in a few weeks.  Trying to raise money sucks!

I feel like doing a walk for an organization is different than a Go Fund Me page.  A girl I went to HS with did a Go Fund Me page so she could have a home birth because her DHs insurance wouldn't cover it and "hospitals are icky."  I rolled my eyes hardcore, especially when she'd post updates about how they're still so far away from their goal, etc.

It really rubbed me the wrong way.
I can't believe ANYONE would be asking for money short of a disease diagnosis or a death etc. A home birth, adoption, so I can get a puppy. What the f*ck ever. I need a new furnace, help me heat my home. I'm so over people thinking everyone else can help them when it's stupid crap. Raising funds for a transplant, absolutely. That isn't cheap. Contributing to IVF for someone, nope, sorry. Do asinine!

We attended an adoption fundraiser for a couple in James' music class. It was a really fun party and I was happy to donate some money. I think that is different than blasting your funding page and not offering up anything in exchange. A daily post in a BST group is insane. I would block her on day 2.
There's totally a difference but I still find it in poor taste. IMHO.

Ha, I just posted in another thread that I like wearing neon orange in the summer. I am very pale and it makes me look like I have a tan. James and I have matching JCrew t-shirts that are a fav. I don't have a pic of me on my computer and my phone takes a full day to email pics now. But here is James sporting his.

I just categorize it the same as the kids hawking candy so their team can go to a tournament or a bake sale so a science club can buy computers. Sure it is the parents responsibility to pay but they are offering up a service or something fun.

  • Is it too late to respond to the first page?

FWIW, I deployed to Afghanistan, and I know they weren't testing any weird stuff on me.  I did have to live next to an open sewage pond in Kandahar for a year, but hey, if you want to live in a country with good infrastructure, don't go to war.

Equal opportunity, and Sexual Assault are taught every single quarter to every single servicemember, including reservists.  The only times I felt at all at risk in the military were things like walking alone at night, and my unit provided me an escort as soon as I brought it up.  I honestly believe the risk of sexual assault is the same at any college as it is in the military- they both have a high number of people in the most at-risk age range socializing and drinking together.  The military has the added risk of people getting misplaced frequently and not always having a support group of trustworthy friends to have their backs, but they do what they can to prevent sexual assault.

I have a medical disability through the VA.  It took about a year to come through, and I got backpaid for the time it took.  I thought the process was fair, though I made sure I maintained my own medical records.  Like PP said, their basic care is adequate.  I think if you need specialized care, the wait can kill, but I can't come up with a way for the VA to not be a bureaucratic, expensive nightmare.  I do like that I can email my healthcare provider w a secure message to get questions answered or prescriptions refilled without having to make an appointment.  When I didn't make a primary care appointment this year, they called me to make sure I didn't want one.

  • I actually would probably be willing to help someone fund an adoption. That shit is insanely expensive--like way way more than OOP costs of prenatal care and birthing a baby, and often more than IVF--and IMO people who adopt, by and large (with few but notable exceptions), are saints.

I would also be willing to help close friends and family out during/after an illness and after a major loss.

    Strangers, no. Random shit, no.

Honestly, if friends threw some kind of party or what not to pay for their adoption and invited me, I'd probably go and throw some money in the hat.  Because it was a friend and I wanted him/her to be happy.  And I'd consider myself good for birthday gifts for a couple years. Kidding.  Kinda.

But I also feel the need to obnoxiously point out that *private* adoption is expensive, whereas going through the state system is typically much lower in cost (yes, I know it also has its drawbacks).  Adopting privately or internationally is a choice.  I 100% respect the people in my life who have adopted privately.  They're awesomesauce people.  They also never asked me for money for their life choice.

I think the cost of state adoption varies by state though. Here it's still wildly expensive. Our state does it through a private non profit organization. It's still much cheaper than looking for a baby through on agency and international, but it's still in the many thousands of dollars. And I'll obnoxiously point out that until very recently, same sex couples in my state couldn't adopt through the state, so private was their only option.

    STUCK

Totally appreciate that.  I just find myself compelled to bust the "adoption is always astronomically expensive" myth whenever possible.  Too many people shut it out completely because they think they can't afford it.  Not true.

In my state adoption from foster is usually run through nonprofits, too, but the costs don't go up because of that.  They just farm out the management of the program.

I know I'm late, but I actually read everything. Here are my thoughts:

Neon looks good in solids - patterned neon on adults hurts my eyes. And pants-no adult neon pants.

I work for the Military (11+ yrs now) and they've really stepped up their game on sexual assault awareness. They have whole down days to discuss how to prevent it, how to report it if you need to go outside your chain, how to recognize it among your ranks, etc. It's a big deal and 100% mandatory (not a wink-wink mandatory).
