NCDR (sorta): Attic Storage

I have refused to let DH put a single unused CD in the attic to store.  They are all in our spare bedroom in a plastic bin.  I did have to concede to let him put baby clothes in the attic though.  We were just running out of room.

We are currently TTC and I seriously don't know what we'll do with all the stuff we've managed to stuff into our spare bedroom.  The closet is completely full. :/  I hate, hate, hate the attic.  I'm scared to go up there and I think anything that was stored in the attic is yucky!

Does anyone know how to properly store stuff in the attic without ruining it or it being infested with bugs?  Maybe a website or blog or something?  The type of stuff I might be storing is: Christmas decorations, baby gear (swing, stroller, carseat, etc), plastic bin full of gift bags and tissue paper, and maybe when hell freezes over my precious CDs :).  P.S. I live in Texas, so at least 50% of the year we have temps at or over 100 degrees.

That will work for most of the stuff, but I don't know how to store like a swing.  Its too big to put into a bag or bin.  I'm DEFINITELY not just putting it up there with plastic over it.  We are undecided on a third so maybe after the next one I'll just get rid of everything.

  • We put our swing in a big plastic garbage bag (the biiiig ones) and it it in our shed, which I promise is way grosser than your attic. It was fine. Attics really aren't that bad.

Our attic isn't that bad. I used to be pretty leery of them too, but our new attic has a regular door you can walk into it instead of a creepy trap door. And it's not gross at all. (We are in tx too.)
Just a reminder, you are better off storing CDs in cardboard than plastic bins. They need to breathe or the elastic can go bad.

I've heard that cardboard is better, but wouldn't that be worse for attic storage?  The CDs I have in our spare bedroom are all prefolds.  There are a few workhorses and covers in there, but since its in the house, I feel like its okay to keep them in the plastic bins.  I guess that's the only bad thing about CDs, you have to figure out how to safely store them in between kids.

I would not store them in the attic, drastic temperature changes can damage them (extreme hot or cold).  I'd keep them in the spare room and anything else in the attic.

  • @TJ1979, its really not that bad.  Our house is less than 5 years old, so its not too bad yet.  I'm remembering the attic when I was growing up.  Our house was 30 years old and the attic was disgusting!!  Plus, it wasn't sealed very well, so we were always having some assortment of rodent digging around up there.  Yuck!!!!

  • We have stored a bunch of baby stuff in our walk-out attic. Anything that goes in the attic goes in plastic bins b/c I have heard bugs like cardboard. For big things like the car seat, swing, and bouncers, I took off the fabric parts, washed them, and stored them in plastic tubs. The frames and seats (non-cloth parts) were fine left as they were since they're easy to clean. The PnP has always stayed downstairs in the guest room. I would feel weird about storing it in the attic b/c it seems like would be so hard to clean if bugs did get to it.

FWIW our house is over 30 years old. DH installed some shelving when I moved out of my classroom 2 years ago, and the stuff stored in those plastic bins has been fine. There is evidence of bugs on the lids of the boxes from time to time (eww, I know), but I've never found any inside the boxes. Just be sure to look for boxes that don't have big gaps or holes under the handles.
