Ate dim sum - worried about slightly pink pork

Hi all - my husband and I took a dim sum class the other night. We made steamed pork dumplings and I had one or two bites and noticed the pork had a slight pink hue (even though I had my husband overcook it). Now I'm terrified of toxoplasmosis, especially considering how devastating it can be. Yes, I've called the doctor but they tend to take a few days to respond to non-emergencies. Has anyone had similar experiences with dim sum? I should note I'm 12 weeks pregnant.

Re: Ate dim sum - worried about slightly pink pork

  • I don't have any similar experiences (never had dim sum!), but I do know that the FDA has relaxed its standards on how well-done pork needs to be cooked in recent years. You used to have to cook it to pork jerky, but not anymore. It's ok now for some light pink in the middle, but the important thing is to check the internal temperature of the meat. Did you use a meat thermometer in this class?

Also, toxoplasmosis is pretty rare these days.

  • If I were you I would drink some water, relax, talk to your dr and stop worrying. There is nothing you can do now since you have eaten and digested said pork. Unless any alarming symptoms pop up (fevers, vomiting, diarrhea etc) there is no need to worry.

  • So to answer people's questions:

    - I specifically mentioned dim sum because of the nature that dim sum is cooked (steamed), I wondered if the meat tends to stay pinker than if it's pan-fried.

    - I emailed my doctor, as I tend to do for non-emergencies. I have no symptoms related to food poisoning or the like, I feel fine. If I did, I would have called the emergency line.

Thanks for everyone's input. I'll see what my doctor says and go from there.

I think you'll be fine. I've eaten dim sum while pregnant many times. If you haven't experienced any fevers, etc, I'd say you're in the clear. Symptoms show up within 48 hrs (I've looked it up in the past lol).

  • I seriously wouldn't worry about it that much. I eat sushi on the reg and I never worry about it.

  • Thanks everyone for the feedback. I saw my doctor today and he was not the least bit worried. He said "You could go to the grocery store, buy raw pork and eat it and your chances of getting toxo are still so low." Even so, I got the toxo bloodwork done because I'm a first-time mother and super worried about every risk. Even though my doctor wasn't at all worried, I seriously think I'm going to cut out pork for the remainder of the pregnancy.  :P

    Don't over react. Seriously.

This. If you are overreacting now, you have a lot more things to overreact about to come. Try not to worry, it's not good for the baby!
  • I hate when the first time mom thing is used as an excuse for over reacting to stuff.  I eat all the sushi at my favorite sushi restaurant.

    Um, yeah. Totally rational reaction.

  • This board really is full of a lot of unhappy people. We can afford to pay for tests out-of-pocket, so we do. Sorry if that sucks for you.

I was more amused thinking about what your ob must have been thinking when he had a patient come in because she ate slightly pink pork.  It's not about being able to afford tests out-of-pocket, it's about being over dramatic and wasting medical resources.  The fact that you think you are being side-eyed for being able to "afford to pay for tests out-of-pocket" and that people are somehow jealous that you could afford to pay for testing is quite ludicrous and naive.

Toxoplasmosis is rare in domesticated pigs these days. And I seriously doubt you were eating wild boar in your cooking class.

Also, pork cooked to a safe temperature often still has a pinkish hue to it.

    Relax, you are fine.

  • I think overreacting is being a bully on a message board because a stranger makes a medical decision that you don't agree with it. Maybe take up a hobby? Seriously stop being so invested/judgmental of strangers. Hope your parenting style is different.

@teaismCAgal LOL cause the only person on here being judgmental is you.  Even your doctor felt you were overreacting.  I hope your parenting style doesn't include teaching your children that people giving them honest sound feedback is "bullying".  Grow a thicker skin.
  • This has to be a troll.

You should learn what the term bully really means. It's people who throw that terms around like you who have no clue what real bullying is anymore.
