Necessities for baby boys?

So we have a 10 month old baby girl. Shout out to my girl Lili! Now we have a baby boy on the way. Is there anything that may pop into your head, moms with boys that during the first year or even for 3-6 months that H and I should purchase? What's an absolute must have and all that jazz?  As we all know the clock is ticking and guess who has zero ready? Anything would help to know, I feel clueless with a boy. Thanks July mama's! :D

  • I'm pregnant now with DD so I'm not sure how different she'll be in the first months from what DS needed. But yeah, throw a little something over that fire hydrant or he'll spray you!

  • I was gifted these from a friend with boys stating they're a MUST... Pee-pee teepee

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00CA92YVM/ref=mp_s_a_1_6?qid=1401825225&sr=8-6
  • Also make sure during diaper changes to point him down. I'm ashamed to admit how many outfits we went through before we realized he was peeing straight up :-)

Wait, does this mean to point his peepee down when the diaper is on? Or do u mean before the diaper is fastened?

I fasten one side, point down, fasten the other side.

Also we just used a wash cloth to catch the spray!
  • I'll be the lone dissenter. We never had problems with peeing all over or any need for those teepee (seem like such a waste). Boys give warning before peeing so I think it is actually easier to avoid pee accidents with boys than with girls. While I don't have any daughters, I've seen my sister changing her daughter's diaper...you can't tell at all when a girl is about to go! Our hospital gave us everything we needed for post-circumcision care. I can't think of anything you need for a boy that you wouldn't heed for a girl otherwise.

  • In addition to what PPs said, if you plan to get him circumcised have a small thing of Vaseline near by to put on the tip to help keep it from sticking to the diaper.
This sparked a thought. A friend of mine put vaseline in a ziplock bag & snipped the corner of the bag sort of like a cake decorating bag would be. Then she could squeeze the vaseline directly on the penis without having to touch it & make him more uncomfortable.
**** Or, you know, you could just save yourself the hassle and buy squeeze tube ;-) https://m.walgreens.com/mt/www.walgreens.com/store/c/vaseline-petroleum-jelly/ID=prod4575-product
lol This is what I was going to suggest. I bought a small tube to have on hand this time because I found it easier than the tubs of vaseline and whatever the hospital sent us home with.

Lots of penis suggestions! LOL! @cookieinva I'm curious, what's the warning? I do like the Vaseline and washcloth suggestions. Woohoo! Oh, and the pointing down, I have heard that before. I will have to remember..........

@cookieinva   So what kind of warning should I be looking for here?

  • The "warning" is just his penis...watch it and you will usually see it move right before he pees. It may not be 100% but it definitely happens.

  • I just used the new diaper I would be putting on with disposables, at least, to avoid having extra laundry. With cloth, I'd rather not start out with a pee in the diaper. But with the super absorbency, you can get away with a little pee in the beginning.

The baby girl thread reminded me...after the circumcision has healed, if applicable, you will need to, how to explain...pull back on the penis frequently, one to clean "penis cheese" and 2 to make certain you don't have skin adhesions. https://life.familyeducation.com/baby/medical-diagnosis/40661.html, found this to help discribe better

If you open the diaper and see a baby boner, you might want to cover it back up.

And don't try to aim it down and put the diaper over it. DS started screaming and crying when I tried to aim his baby boner down like I usually do when he's soft and DH is like "What're you DOING?! Do you know how bad that hurts to force it down when it's hard?!" Um nope. Needless to say, I didn't do it again. Sorry DS.

Really? DD only peed on me once and it was after she was a year old. My boy will be here July so I'll see then what he does.

I'm sure it depends on the kid but yeah, my daughter was big on peeing during diaper changes when she was an infant.  She had some serious water pressure going on there too LOL

I'm still waiting for this to happen. Haven't seen one yet on DS. Not that I'm seeking it out, but it's one of those things you hear about but hasn't happened in our home. Yet.
  • I kept little alcohol swab pads that I squeezed over his belly button to help dry it out faster. (Doc said to do this, DS had a pick line and wanted to me to make sure it didn't get infected while his belly button was healing.)

I didn't do peepee teepee's, but I made sure before I even had his diaper open to change it, I had the new one unfolded and ready in case he might pee. I agree if you open the diaper and see a baby boner, either hurry and change the diaper or pull the old one back up for a few min.

Yes, changing DD as a newborn she would absolutely pee with no warning. The best thing for me was having the new diaper underneath so in case of any accidents, the new dipe was in place and ready for spillage.

  • Definitely need gauze and Vaseline if you get him circumcised. I learned the hard way and was peed on more times than I like to admit. So washcloths would be a must.

Yeah, those happened a lot (still do) with DS. It's weird at first, but it's completely normal. They eventually try to play with themselves too, even before they turn one.
Yep.  My son went through a phase were he got really happy and giggly whenever I had to put diaper cream on him too.

We bought the squeeze tube. The tip of it is still big & a newborn's penis is very small. Trying to get close enough with the tube to squirt the vaseline covered up his tiny wee wee. It's not for everyone but helpful for some to do the bag.
