Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Anyone deliver a "Late" preterm ????

Just curious if anyone delivered 35-37 weeks and how the baby was as far as breathing and eating, etc. I just went into PTL again friday and they may not stop it again. So I am just wondering how many of you had encountered some problems and how many did not. Thanks alot :)

Re: Anyone deliver a "Late" preterm ????

  • OUrs was 36w and 6d and she is doing awesome. Scored 9/9 on her Apgar test thingy. She was technically early, 8 hours away from being "term"..

  • my twins were born at 35 weeks and 1 day.  i had a steroid shot though at 31 weeks - not sure if that made a difference.  have you had one?

but they were fine.  a tad small (a little over 5 pounds) but they were able to room in with us, and go home with us.

  • DS was born at 36 weeks 6 days also.  He was taken to the NICU for low blood sugar issues, then had to stay for a week due to high bilirubin levels (and was re-admitted for another 4 days after being home for 2 for the high levels), but other than that he was fine.  He also has an ASD (hole between the upper chambers of his heart), which we follow up with the cardiologist about this month, but that most likely had nothing to do with him being "pre-term."  GL to you!
  • They will not give me the steroid shot because they do not think it will make a difference this late

  • DS was born at exactly 35 weeks (water broke spontaneously) and was 6lb 6oz; he was on CPAP to help him breathe for 5 days, then in the NICU for another week to eat and grow. Came home with no medical issues and no  assistance- everything since the discharge has been exactly the same as my other DS who was born at 40 weeks.  He is doing well and I think just about on par with where you would expect at 7 wk old to be.
  • DS was born at 35 weeks 4 days. He was 6lbs 3oz and pretty much perfect. No breathing issues, no bilirubin issues, no glucose issues. Stayed three days in the hospital to make sure he was eating ok, I bf, but he never even saw the NICU.

  • L was born at 35 weeks 2 days, I was induced because of my blood pressure. I did NOT get steroids either. He went to the NICU and had soem trouble breathing, he was on Nasal CPAP for 3 or 4 hours. He had a collapsed lung that resolved on its own & didnt' cause any problems. He went to breast at 8 hours of age & has been eating like a champ ever since, he only lost 5% of his birth weight before starting to regain. He got 1 supplement because my blood pressure was too high to feed or pump. We spent 6 days in the NICU because of jaundice, because we had an ABO blood incompatiblity, this would have been a problem whether he was pretern or term. He has done awesome ever since, he has met all his milestones like a term baby.

ETA: He weighed 5lbs 10 oz at birth! At 2 months we was 11lb 14 oz!!

  • I was induced at exactly 37 wks due to low fluid levels. DD was 6lbs even at birth. She has a slight heart murmur and they had to keep her a while in the warmer in the nursery to help her regulate her temp, but she never had to go to NICU and has been growing like a weed ever since!

They told me the same thing and my DD was born with respiratory distress, had to be resuscitated and was in the NICU on oxygen for 5 days.

Ask for it anyway, if you can. I wish they would have given it to my DD. It might have made her first few days MUCH more easy and enjoyable. I still feel so guilty that I couldnt do anything to help her.

She was born at 35w5d, btw. and was 5lbs 15oz

  • I had J at 37 and 3 days.  I did get the steriod shots at 32ish weeks because I went into labor, but they were able to stop it.  When J was born he was 6 lb. 14 oz. and had apgars of 8/9.  He needed a little bit of blow by oxygen directly after birth but not because he wasn't breathing well, but because he was tachycardic.  His heart rate was too high in the 10 minutes after delivery, but the oxygen helped bring it back down to normal.  He didn't need any special care nursery time.

Good luck and hang in there.  I had problems with PTL too and made it to full term (technically).

  • My son was born at 37 weeks, 4 days. He was 5 lbs. 4 oz. No idea why he came early, my water broke spontaneously at home. He was breathing a little fast at first, but they just kept checking him the first night until his breathing was totally normal. He's really very healthy. He's been gaining weight like a champ and has had no health problems so far.?
  • 37 w here.No problems post labor except jaundice. 8/9 on APGARs.
