Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Anyone else have a bow-legged toddler?

DS is really bow-legged. I brought this up to our pediatrician at his 18 mo appt and the pedi watched him walk and felt his legs and said hes not the least bit concerned and he will grow out of it.  My husband isn't concerned either, he said he was bow-legged too and obviously hes not now but my mother and grandmother keep telling me me to take him to an orthopedic just to get looked at and now I am thinking that I should. Anyone else experience this?

  • it's normal- here's a link: https://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/001585.htm

toddlers are generally bow-legged until 2 1/2 or 3 years old. my DS is 21 months and is still bow-legged. if your pedi is not concerned, i would not worry.

  • My toddler is more knock kneed than bowlegged and I was worried, same as you, at the 18-month appointment.  Since DS walks/runs fine the pedi said not to worry, it usually works out by 3-years.  I asked my Dad as well (he is a pedi) and he said the same thing.  At the 2-year appointment I will probably mention it again, just to keep it in the record, but am not worried.

One thing DS' pedi said is that orthopedic consults are much less likely now than before.  So your mother and grandmother may be going on what was normal when they had kids and the research has changed practice since then.
  • Thanks! I was trying not to worry but they kept putting ideas in my head! DS walks, runs, climbs just fine so it doesnt seem to be affecting him.

  • Our DD is the same way at 14MO she has significant curves in her little legs. the Ped wasnt surprised as she was an early walker. My husband was the same way and has totally grown out of it.
  • Same here. My daughter is at 15 months. Her doctor hasn't been concerned at both her 12 and 15 month well baby check. She walks very well and loves to run.
  • Rickets (bow legged when older) is caused by a lack of vitamin D. So make sure they're getting their vitamin D.
Our pedi has our son on an extra vitamin D supplement for his development. I don't know if that's the norm or not for this is my first child. It may be something for you to consider if your DS is not already on a supplement.

(Ours is a liquid vitamin. We just add one drop to his milk once a day).

  • My husband is very concerned about DD's bow legs. I asked the pedi at her 15 month appointment and she wasn't worried, said she'd grow out of it but if it hadn't gone away by the time she was 4 that they would look into it more.

Fast forward 3 months to her 18 month appointment with a different pedi in the practice and now we need an extra appointment at 21 months to see if the bow leggedness has gone away at all.

So I'm not sure what to think. One dr says it's nothing to worry about and rhe other wants to check her out again in 3 months because of it
