Baby girl names

H and I are at an impasse (sp?) on baby girl names. We have two we like, Harper Ann or Abigail Ann. Our last name starts with an H, so I'm not sure about first and last names starting with the same letter, plus Harper is really trendy (or so I've been told). With Abigail Ann, it's almost too many vowels, but I like Abigail, we'd call her Abby.

Thoughts? Other names/ideas? We've been through about 20-30 names and can't agree. He really wanted McKenzie or Brady which I don't like. I wanted Chloe, but he hates it.

Re: Baby girl names

  • My first and last initials were the same growing up. It had no impact on my life. Don't let that stop you if that is your favorite name.

    Kid #1 - 09/03/12
    Kid #2 - maybe???
    Diagnosed with Severe Ashermans
Hysteroscopy #10 - scar tissue grew back reblocking my right tube
#11 or IVF with scarring still inside?

  • I agree with @Flamingemu. DS has the same initial for first and last name. It sounds completely fine together. I know of 1 Harper IRL. It's a very cute name.

I'm sure it didn't. I just wonder if it sounds "funny" when I say the two names together, kwim?

Unless its the like Harper Carper or something I'm sure it wouldn't. This was one reason we can never go with Graham for a boy. Our last name ends in "ham."

I don't think it's weird to have the same initial. Our baby will. I think it sounds catchy. I love Harper. I personally wouldn't use it because of it's popularity, but I really love it. Abby is another one I really like too. I don't think you could go wrong with either one. Other names at the top of our list: Sadie, Maeva, Hannah, Molly, Lillian (Lily).

I liked Sadie, Hannah and Molly, but they all got vetoed. :-/

  • I have no advise as DH and I can't find anything we both like. I do like Abigail, and would guess you are more likely to run into more Abby's than Harper's.

James has the same initial for his first and last name. I like the flow of it. Seems to make the name more memorable to me. Same for Abigail Ann, I like the flow and ease of the name.

Harper will be the more trendy name that will probably be able to pinpoint within 10 years of her age when she is sending out her resume. But overall, there will be more Abigails because it is a classic name that will always be used.

  • I know 2 Abby's in real life and don't care for either of them.  For me, it has tainted the whole name.  :-(  I do like Harper, a lot, but if you don't know many kids with it, then it's not an issue.

A girlfriend of mine from high school had a baby yesterday (3 weeks early!) and they named her Rosalie, which I totally love.

Other girls names that were on our list:
    Penny, Cora, Holly & Ivy.

I wouldn't worry about FN and LN starting with the same letter.  Unless you're going to switch up the MN to something with an H too, in which case, that might be weird. :-)

  • I really like Abigail and I wouldn't even shorten it to Abby!

I think both names are fine. It depends on if you want trendy or not. The two vowels sound good together and I think it only sounds bad when it's two names ending in vowel sounds.

  • All of my girl names are a little bit different, so you probably wouldn't be interested in them. But here they are anyway:

    Lennon
    Elliott (nn Ellie)
    Clementine
    Scout
    Elijah
    Arwen (nn Winnie)
    Evie
    Louis (nn LouLou)
    Indiana (nn Indie)

And I love the name Harper, even if it is super trendy right now. Also, I know we have plenty of time left before October, but I want the name decided NOW. DH is dragging his feet.

I revoke my vote for Clementine, and insist that you name her Scout. That was my top choice for this baby, but it got vetoed.

And, to OP, I like them both. I think Harper sounds better with Ann, but I like the name Abigail better. I agree with PPs, though, that you shouldn't veto a name just because of the double initial. She will get married one day anyway, and chances are her new last name won't start with H!

Do you know how disappointed I'll be if you don't name her Scout?
I'm pushing hard for Lennon so all of you Scout and Clementine fans are probably going to be upset.

I love the name Harper!  It was my number 1 choice, but DS is Parker and they sound too much alike.  I did a lot of tests on DS by calling out "Harper come here" and he responded every time.  I am also a fan of Abigail so I really don't think you could go wrong.

    My other girl suggestions are:
    Genevieve (DD's name) Nickname- Evie
    Fallon

I went to school with a girl whose name was Fallon Grey, and I always thought that was the most badass name ever
  • @jenndub, I'll sit in your Lennon corner. I LOVE it. I also like Scout and Clementine, but I think a lot of people won't necessarily get the Scout reference and then just think you're a huge Demi Moore/Bruce Willis fan, ha.

On that note, Harper, while popular right now, is actually a rather old name. It would have been on our original girl list if we were team green. To Kill A Mockingbird is my favorite book.

What is the Scout reference? I don't associate it with anything else.

To Kill a Mockingbird. Go read it immediately!
I admit stupid Demi Moore's kid was my first thought, and then I realized you were smart, so it had to be from To Kill a Mockingbird. :-)

Oh, I've read it, but just didn't automatically connect. I make the Harper association faster for that one!

  • I like Harper. Abigail is just as popular, IMHO. And I don't like nicknames, so that's swaying it for me as well. HH as initials is cute.

    Corinne?

I knew a Corinne, I definitely can't name DD that. Bad association, unfortunately.

I like both Harper and Abigail. Harper is trendier but Abigail is much more popular if that's what you are worried about. I don't personally know any Harpers but I know 3 little Abigails.

Just throwing out ideas here, but here were some names on our list:

    Cora
    Violet
    Clara
    Caroline
    Amelia
    Savannah
    Charlotte

Also, since you like Harper, how about Piper?

And since you like Chloe, how about Zoe? Or Paige, I always get a similar feel from Paige.

I like Chloe a lot but my setback with it is I'm not sure if it would age well. Like I think it sounds adorable for a little girl but as an adult? I always like to picture the name on an adult in the workplace. It's still on the top of my list for if we have a girl though. I think Chloe and Connor as a sibset is adorable

Cute sibset! I see what you mean about how it sounds when she's older.

  • My SIL was going between Chloe and Kennedy and ultimately went with Kennedy.  I babysat for a Chloe a million years ago.  It's actually been around since the 17th century, so I'm sure there have been plenty of adults with that name.  That's not one that I think of when i'm concerned with aging with a name.

The only reason I'm meh about it is because of those damn Kardashians.

I still love Harper.  :-)  A good friend of mine has Taylor & Skylar.  I think both of those are cool too.

our dogs name is Chloe. There was a new teacher at keagans school this year named Chloe and I struggled with it as a name on an adult. Plus, the association with my dog didn't help haha

My bosses name is Cl.o.etta and she goes by Cl.oe.  I think it works well for adult and child..  Although she pronounces it like Clove without the V.  Silent e instead of a hard e....  Does that even make sense?

  • I love Margot/Margeaux (sp?) and Mallory for girls.   I also like Mira and Miranda (both variations of DD's name).

When I was pregnant with DS, Chloe was our girl name.  We didn't use on DD because DH's cousin ended up using it (not knowing it was on our list)

Also, don't be scared of alliteration...it's working well for the Kardashians!
